Personal Narrative: My Asthma Trip
Before this trip, I had never climbed a mountain and this was more than just climbing a mountain. So I wasn’t really prepared mentally or physically to go on a trip that required carrying a 40 to 50 pound pack over steep, rocky trails at elevations ranging from 6,500 to 12,500 feet. Since I had a history of asthma when I was in middle school, I was a little nervous as I wasn’t sure if I will be able to complete this trip without being pulled out from the crew half way through the trip due to my asthma. This trip was the first time I prepared my own freeze-dried meals with boiling water on a stove. The whole aspect of coordination and teamwork was also very new to me since I had never been in a situation that required me to pace with my crew and navigate across a mountainous terrain using a compass. The most unique part of this trip was the 10 whole days I …show more content…
Over the 12 day hike, we climbed numerous mountains through different terrains, saw different animals both dead and alive and learned so much about nature and conservation. We met so many fellow scouts and adults from all over the country and other countries, which was a great learning experience. I participated in games and activities like throwing tomahawk, Fly Fishing, Archery, Muzzle Loading Rifles, enjoyed the Sweat Lodge, visited some famous sites like the pioneer Kit Carson’s home along the Santa Fe Trail, helped the staff at Carson Meadows with a search and rescue mission, learned how to homestead at Crooked Creek, enjoyed mountain living, visited the wreckage of a B24 bomber that crashed while on a training mission in 1942 that can only be seen by hiking all the way to the top of the mountain, ate a chuck wagon dinner, enjoyed a cowboy campfire, visited the Continental Tie and Lumber Company at Crater Lake and worked on a trail construction project with the Conservation Department. All this was a memorable experience that I will cherish

The best reward to hiking was always the food. We made time to eat at Dave’s BBQ, which was fantastic. I had pulled pork, french fries and sweet tea. The pork melted in my mouth. The funniest part was none of us had showered in more than 4 days. I’m sure we smelled like Wombats. Others eating that night were staring and scrunched their noses at us. It was obvious we were the only ones coming off a trail.…

It was going to be a short ride only about 4 hours altogether through the South Dakota mountains. About an hour into our ride, we reached the mountains and as soon as we did Brody, Eli, Maddy, and I rode our horses to the top of the mountains. When we reached the top of the mountains we got off our horses and looked out over the South Dakota scenery, it was a beautiful view. I have never seen a better view in my life. You could see so far since we were up so high in the air and when we looked down at Tommy and Cassie they looked like ants. After we took a few pictures we headed back down to Tommy and Cassie. We went a little further after we got down from the mountain and then we turned back and headed towards camp. We arrived back at camp we washed, fed, and watered the horses. When we were done with that stuff we made a fire and started carving on sticks for a competition we were having and then at about 11 we went to…

Despite reports of significant snow levels at higher elevations, it appeared to be a seasonable day and we chose to complete a day hike to Rocky Top, classified as one of the most strenuous climbs in the park. We climbed seven miles and 3,600 feet, first in the mud, and then in the snow, to reach the summit, only to be greeted by nasty winds and below-freezing temperatures. We were wet, cold, and dirty and it was the closest that I came to both vomiting and collapsing of fatigue on a hike, and the only time that I hallucinated quite a bit. But I never quit the…

Weather destruction hits hard some places more then others around the world. In Alpena where I live we rarely have any kind of major weather damage. On June 14, a group of 44 members from Grace Lutheran Church, as well as other churches in Alpena, drove 20 hours to Mayflower, Arkansas where a level 5 tornado had hit. I was one of these, along with my mom and one of my best friends Maddy. For six months we had prepared and fundraised. I did not want to go on this trip, but what I was going to see was much more than what I had imagined--i came back more grateful for the life I have and more aware of the problems that other people deal with.…

At 1:15 a.m. I emerged from my tent with my boots laced, my ice-axe stowed, and my headlamp glowing. I was ready for this mountain, rearing to begin the ascent up its face. Before leaving base camp, my guide had a few words to share with the team. We gathered around him, and he began. “This will not be an easy climb,” he warned, “And not all of you will reach the summit. If you feel disoriented, I will send you down. If you are slowing, I will send you down. If you present a danger to yourself or to the team, I will send you down. If I tell you it is time, you will not object to my command. You will go down. Do you understand?” None of us had any intention of stopping. We spent weeks training for this climb and were certain that by midday we…

While medical care was available growing up, there were financial or situational periods where it was not necessarily accessible. I am from a single parent family. My mother moved in with my grandparents after her divorce and works two full time jobs to help provide for my brother, grandparents, and I. Since my father went to jail and my grandfather passed, we have had to make many adjustments financially. This was the case due to my father not providing payments for child support for the time he was incarcerated nor occasional months prior. There has also been a complication with my mother and I having our identity stolen, which has created additional problems when applying for governmental aid throughout my undergraduate years. I worked…

I returned back from vacation this week and it was nice to see all the children’s smiling faces. The parent’s express how they missed me as well as their children. This makes me love my job even more. This week there was a two year old child who had a seizure at the center; this was scary for the children, staff, as well I. 911 had to be called out to the center. We all have had CPR and first aid training so we were comfortable with handling the case until the ambulance reached us. However, we were not so prepared when the child stopped breathing. This was a learning experience, but I do not want to do it again. I want all my children safe and happy. I had to ride with the child to the hospital till her mother was reached and notified what…

On Friday October 21, 2016 we had our first 8th grade field trip. We went to Four Mounds - I watched as Kate did the log walk, I thought this couldn't be too bad, I couldn't wait to try it out . When it was my turn to climb, I was strapped up to go on the log, Jake was struggling to get the bright Barbie pink, colored helmet off his head so I said “do you need help?”…

A week before the “Florida Trip” I knew nothing about I was hanging out my friends when my parents called me and told me that we were going on a week long trip and they said they wouldn’t tell me till I got home. I got home that night and my parents told me we were going to Florida and I was so excited! My alarm went off, I was so excited that we were going on the journey of a lifetime! The night before everyone in my family was stressing because they didn’t know what to pack. I just wanted to go to bed, but I was so happy I couldn't so I packed my clothes and what not in the suitcase and went to go eat out with a few buddies before I leave, It’s just a week but a lot can happen in a week nowadays. The next day I woke up it was 6 or 7ish am and I was excited I was finally leaving for Florida. Finally living my dream. On the way to the airport my phone was blowing up from friends texts saying “ Have a great save trip, bring me back something!”…
