Personal Narrative: Moving To Yorba Linda
In the world of modern technology, filled with the internet, it is very easy for a person to manipulate their true character. These days it seems far too difficult to meet someone who truly expresses who they are in person. After moving to Yorba Linda in the seventh grade, I experienced this problem. School was about to start soon and after just moving in the area I didn't have anyone to talk to, I was lonely. I didn’t know what to do. And even worse, I was extremely shy. As the first day of school rolled around I decided to just stay calm and just listen to my teachers, but deep down I was nervous. The first few days went by fine, I didn’t talk to anyone or eat lunch with anyone but I didn’t have any problems. Of course, however, I knew I

Going to Southern California, no one would think of packing an umbrella. Why would they? California is in the middle of a drought. When someone thinks of California, they think of baby blue skies and palm trees along the streets. But, of course, the weekend my family decided to visit Disneyland, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld is the weekend Southern California experienced what the local news called a “tropical depression.”…

As the fog lifts and the sun begins to rise over Torrey Pines golf course cliffside, I can’t stop myself from staring into the vast Pacific Ocean that forms the perfect early morning backdrop. The salty ocean breeze briskly flashes across my face as I approach my shot from the tee box of the third hole. A dramatically set two-hundred-yard downhill par three, encased by ocean cliffs, safeguarded by a colony of trees to the right and an enormous sand trap that spans the entire front of the green. An intimidating setting for even the most seasoned golfer, or worse, an opportunity for the average golfer like myself to succumb to the pressure. Just like the person I’ve been paired with for the day, I’ve never played this course before. As I…

In 2008 I moved to Bluffton to help start a new aluminum remelt facility called Alexin. I was one of three invited to make the move from western Kentucky by the presidents of Alexin because of my knowledge of the industry, my reputation as a hard worker, and my positive attitude. In the past nine years a lot has changed. Even though I know longer work in the aluminum industry, I still pride myself on my knowledge, reputation, and attitude. The job has changed, but what it takes to be successfully in any occupation has not.…

Before I moved to NC , I lived out west. The demographic and food delicacies are far different than here in the south. My taste aversion was fully loaded hot dog with chili and slaw. I never heard of that type of combination on a hot dog. I was raised eating a hot dog with just ketchup, mustard, relish and sometimes onions. I have lived in NC for about 23 years. I finally tried eating a hot dog Carolina style and love it. Since I have gluten allergy, I skip the bun and still eat it that way.…

The city that I come from is not a representation of who I am. Pomona, California is known for it’s high crime rights, and all around gang violence. It is troublesome not to fall through the cracks when the temptation is all around my community. Growing accustom to this environment makes it that much easier to fall a victim into this lifestyle. At the age of 15, for the first time in my life, I experienced a retaliation drive by up the street from where I sleep, the place I call home. That night I heard a total of five gunshots, and was later informed the gun shots left two family friends paralyzed. One is now paralyzed from the neck down, and the other from the waist down. The two victims were sisters, and were not the main target. The shots…

One day I came home from school and saw a moving truck in front of my home. The first thing I did was find my parents to ask them if we were moving. They both said yes, all of us are moving to Fresno California. I was afraid because I had lived in Modesto my entire life and was very comfortable here. I knew my way around Modesto and especially my school where I had many friends and knew the teachers well. Modesto, after all, is my hometown and now I'm transferring to a foreign place. When all of us arrived in Fresno we stayed there a couple of weeks and realized the house had a huge amount of issues such as with leaking water pipes, a broken heater and a variety of other problems. My dad said “Maybe we are not meant to live here”. Finally…

May of 2008, I moved from a homogenous, developing suburban city of Vietnam to the demographically diverse and well developed Bay Area. It was a hard journey, having to uproot my entire existence to start a new life in a country I don’t even know anything about other than its involvement during the Vietnam War. My life was spun upside down to downside up because my parents thought this country would give my brother and me better futures.…

As a child I have always wanted to help other people. When I was 8 my parents decided to separate. At the time, my mother decided to move my sister and I away from Chicago. My mother packed our luggage and decided to move us to Detroit. That wasnt the only time we moved, we moved four times while I was growing up, all over the country and even to another continent. Eventually we had to leave our mom in Nigeria and my sister and I went to Detroit. When we got to Detroit my aunt didn't hesitate to make us feel comfortable. It was just something about it,I still didn't feel right. I called my mother one day crying to her and explaining how we didn't like being there. After talking to her, I felt that it was time to go back to Chicago. I called my dad, (knowing I haven’t spoke/seen him for many years) and explained to him the situation on how we felt uncomfortable in Detroit.…

The day I found out I would be moving from Roseville to Alpena was probably the worst day of my life. I remember the day I found out about the move. I would be going into my 6th grade year in the fall, my first year of middle school. My brother and I did everything we could to try to sabotage the move, but sadly our plans failed. Thinking back on it now, Alaska was an important part of my life, having lived there for the majority of the time I’ve been alive. The small town of Eagle River was a great place to live, even if it gets very cold in the winter. Since I’ve lived there for so long, I learned how to make my way around from Point A to Point B without much hassle and figured out how easily friends can come if you try. Where I lived in a neighborhood that wasn’t too far away from a safeway, so I could walk there and do some errands for my folks, and maybe do some shopping for myself as well. There was a park just across the way, which is where I spent most of my days if I wasn’t being a lazy nerd at my computer. If the summer wasn’t rainy, it…

hometown of Lawndale, California is a quaint little city. Diverse in ethnicity and quite peaceful. Growing up I liked to take walks in the fresh summer breeze. Hard to believe it was more then 20 years ago. Accomponied by my grandmother, its one of my most fond memories. After our stroll we would grab a bite to eat at the local burger joint which was called Brolly Hut. Boy what a burger that was! A thick juicy bun crunchy lettuce and thick slices of tomatoes with the shredded lettuce which I enjoyed more then the slice other restaurant's would just throw…

I was born in Scottsdale, Arizona on March 15th, 1999. I lived in Arizona until I was five years old. My brother Ben is two years older than me which is the perfect age difference to create competition between us. When Ben found something new to do, I had to do it too. It didn’t matter that I just turned three years old, I had to ride my bike without training wheels because Ben just did. Now I can’t remember exactly what I thought watching him do this, but I can assume I wanted to be like him. So when my dad was done helping Ben, I asked to have my training wheels taken off so that I could give it a try. Reluctantly, my dad did and when we got to the top of the hill he gave me a push to start and I ended up losing control and crashing into a cactus. Even with that initial bad experience of riding without training wheels, I still wanted to be like my brother. This admiration quickly had me riding a loop around my house daily so as to improve my skills.…
