Growing up, I noticed a lot of discussion about financial problems between my parents. It’s not that we were becoming poor, it was because of our growing family needing more supplies. My mother just gave birth to my little brother when I started noticing the financial issues my family were facing. As a little girl, I do not know how our finances worked all I knew was many bills were due and I knew it because when I was a little girl I liked to practice reading and those bill statements were the papers that attracted my interest due to its colorful paper.…
Two years ago, on a cold Saturday morning, I prepared for my first ever track tryout. I took a shower, put on my clothes, and got into the car. On my way to practice, I felt strong physically, but I also had an undefined, jittery feeling about how the day was going to go.…
It’s not very often when you get to go somewhere really far away and have a ton of fun. But this was one of these times. But I never would've thought of the one thing I would have to do when we went to Disney World.…
Have you ever wondered where you would be if you would have chosen another path? Have you ever wondered how that choice could have changed your life if you would have made it? Often I look back and think about my past and look at the places I have been and the things I have done. Some things I’m not proud of. Some of those things bring back vague memories. Whether they are good or bad they still come back to me. Everything we do is based upon choices. After we make those choices there comes consequences. We can never decide our consequences, they just come.…
This year’s event we did the theme of Remembering Our Students/ Recordando Nuestros Estudiantes. In relation to the current movements regarding Black Lives Matter, police brutality, Ayotzinapa 43, school shootings, and indigenous women missing. I think this event is important to our campus, because SCSU is a diverse campus with very close minded individuals. So this brings the aspect of culture and tradition with the Dia de Los Muertos celebration and MEChA’s activist focus of political issues. These two combined can provide knowledge and awareness to those students who are unaware or misinformed. As well as taking on the problem of cultural appropriation with the recent American popularization of sugar skulls and Dia de…
Hi, Señor Belles! I was just emailing you to tell you that I got my syllabus signed by my Mom the night you made it due. I looked on Aeries and you said I had it missing. I can resend it if you’d like. I understand if you haven’t entered the grades in the grade book, but if otherwise, please message me back.…
It sits on the whitish nightstand, a gentle reminder on a hectic day of bustling and forced dialogue to relax and reminisce. Wrapped in its faded wooden cerulean frame, the snapshot transports me to another place. While the actual photograph is slightly sun-bleached, the memory stands clear and vibrant in my mind. My Abuelitos and I are sitting in a row on the shore. Our chairs are bright cherry red. I’m wearing my favorite aquamarine Little Mermaid two-piece, the one with the sparkly flounder on the side. My strong, hardworking Abuelo sports his usual slicked back hairstyle and striped collared shirt that always seemed to complement his olive toned skin. My Abuelita garbs a crisp linen shirt…
I went on a trip to Las Vegas for Christmas one year and it was a trip that I would never forget. When we arrived in Las Vegas we stayed in the Luxor Hotel. The Luxor in Las Vegas is a good place to go because of the luxury of the hotel, the exquisite food, and magnificent entertainment. I enjoyed staying in the famous Luxor hotel and Casino. I loved staying in the beautiful four star hotel, it was fun, and I hope to go back someday.…
What is a legacy? Lin Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton described it as “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see”. In a similar way, the Broadway musical, In The Heights, sings about continuing what is passed down to you because one day it may be gone. One song in particular titled, “Paciencia y Fe” inspires me to work as hard as I can just like Abuela Claudia did when she immigrated from Cuba. The Broadway hits’ harmonies and melodies have instilled in me a sense of hope for the future, where I can continue a family legacy.…
“No one is gonna save you. Do you honestly think someone cares about you? You have been missing for over six days, I don’t think they miss you. I thought you had a brother, what was his name? Joshua, Jason, Jacob, no it is Jackson. That’s right, although he goes by Jax if I remember correctly. Where exactly does he think you are.” Nic demanded.…
The past few days at placement have been an emotional rollercoaster for me. In past few days I experienced tears of joy, and tears of sadness, one moment I was happy with a survivor’s growth and the next moment I was heartbroken to hear the struggles they faced to be where they are at now. At one point I felt like I had no control over my emotions and it was my emotions that had control over me. I felt so weak when I had no control, but I also felt good and free to let all my emotions out. The past few days at placement made me reevaluate certain things in my personal life, and changed my perception for a lot of things.…
Located in New York, the cultural and financial capital of the world, I know that my time at Columbia will be both productive and enjoyable.…
There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…
The trail out back the beauty of nature and the smell of the fresh air. The leaves they’re falling all around you. As you walk the trail leads you to a big waterfall that not many people know about. As you just sit on the rock and watch the leaves fall while the sun sets it’s the most beautiful thing you could ever see. Listening to the birds make their music while lying on the rock besides the water. It’s calm and relaxing; However it can get a bit chilly. Sometimes if you take the four wheeler or dirt bike out back Zoey will run along side of you. Zoey is our dog she runs just as fast as the four wheeler does. Then I imagine of being a little girl again going out back with my dad. We used to catch salamanders on our way to where we were going.…
time for me to begin my 10 minute warming up. I move my head side to side, stretch my legs, and I begin to walk briskly. I drank my water because I need to stay hydrated. When I was ready I sprinted out like a rocket. My brother began to time me. It took me 12 minutes to finish my one mile. Once I felt that my heart was pounding, my stomach started to develop painful cramps, and my My throat was as dry as a bone. I stopped and took deep breaths in and out. I took a five minute break and finished my 3 miles by walking. Once I finished my three miles I felt proud of myself and motivated for the next days to…
