This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…

My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area. “Wow! I did not know there were black Americans”. During the month I was in China, I heard this or a variant of it jokily said to me numerous times. I never took offense to it since I understood most of the media from America that came to China featured individuals who did not look like me. Furthermore, for those Americans who had come to China, they were mostly white and had come for business. While in China, I was able to share my experience as an African-American; I always found enjoyment sharing my experiences and it seemed to me those around me found enjoyment learning about a different side of America. With me sharing my experiences, they were being able to understand the diverse nature of the United States.…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

I was born and raised in one of the poorest country in the world, Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s life expectancy is one of the lowest and civilians do not receive the medical attention they need. I have witnessed people being sent home from the hospital since they do need have enough money and doctors were not “available.” I was one of the people who was told to come back a year later due to doctors being not available. The injury that I had was a devastating one that could have ended my life. My skull was cracked and I was bleeding internally. Even though, the damage to my skull was rapidly weakening my body, I was not seen by the doctors. Witnessing all those people I saw including myself not being helped motivated me to study biology so I could become…

Kids all around me whispered excitedly to each other about the party in the park that afternoon. All of us black kids, were going to get out of school and go down there. We are all so eager to see that signal that none of us were paying attention to the teacher. After a while, Mrs. Tiller just gave up on teaching us and started grading papers. We all are waiting by the windows anxious to see when we got to run and join our friends. We are sitting here contemplating what we are about to do. I don’t want to think about the time when we would be stuck in jail. I just want to think about us standing up for all of the blacks. My ma and pa don’t want me to go with everyone. but , for once, I won’t listen. I will be a proud black and stand up for…

The dark of night lay subdued upon me like a stifling blanket, hindering my escape. Running beneath the twinkling of stars, I checked my pocket for the security of my blade. I grasped the handle with a sense of dependence for the cold rigid grip. After running for some time, I found myself near a soldier in a wheat field. Without hesitation, I delivered the soldier to death, beginning my mission. Observing his eyes rolling into his head, his jaw relaxing, his chest resting upon the dirt, and the smell of fresh blood—ha!—I knew I would never turn back. After I had committed my first murder, I became heavily devoted to killing with a bitter taste of sweetness for my homicide tallies. After I had killed my first soldier, I knew to depart far from the scene.…

As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. I began to wonder when will I get one with imaginary job I will live the high life. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. As a young child, I never really understood the concept of having a healthy racial identity. Racial identity was not a topic of conversation in school; however school and other factors have had major effects on my racial identity. I was not even familiar with what it meant to be a Black individual. When I was younger, I did not focus on being black or white, I solely focused on playing with other children. However, it was not until racist events began to occur did I begin to question my identity. Anyone would think that a child whom was raised in a family where racial pride is prominent would evidently grow into an adult that also projects this racial pride. However, distinct racist events, micro-aggressions, and other events have a major impact on how children and adults contract their racial identity.…
