Personal Narrative: Lebanon High School Marching Band
I am a leader. I have all the qualities that make a great leader, but I was not born this way.Experiences and how someone reacts to those experiences are what truly make a leader. One of the most influential experiences I have gone through is called the Lebanon High School Marching Band. I am certain that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for marching band. Before coming to high school I already had leadership qualities, but band helped bring all those great qualities together and helped me get past my two major flaws: my lack of self-confidence and the fact that I was probably one of the shyest people you would EVER meet. When I joined marching band, I spent most of my waking hours sweating and suffering alongside wonderful people that I longed to …show more content…
I went from the girl who was terrified of speaking her mind to someone who can easily give speeches in front of people and can lead a clarinet section of 20 people. Being responsible for 19 other people is a challenge that freshman me would never have been able to do, and in this way, band has helped me grow into both the leader and the person that I am today. However, band didn’t just help me grow, it made me happy. My memories of band are some of the happiest memories of my life. Memories ranging from praying to all the band gods above for a water break or possibly a nice cloud to shade us from the evil sun to marching and winning sweepstakes at our very first competition and crying our tears of happiness together. I will always cherish these memories.Band acted as my salvation in how it forced me to grow into the leader I am today and how it made me happy. I want college to act as my second salvation. When I first found Arcadia, I wanted to go there simply for the accelerated forensic science program it provided. Then, I visited the campus and realized that I adore it and would love living

-Through marching band, I've learned to give straight-forward instructions which I find is more effective in most scenarios outside of the culture. Due to the constant command shoutings, I’ve improved on projecting my voice. Lastly, I've learned how to properly treat my leaders though it’s a low power…

"Great leaders don't set out to be a leader... They set out to make a difference. It's never about the role - always about the goal." This quote is by Lisa Haisha, a lady identified as one of Hollywood’s famous head counselors and humanitarians. The aspects of a leader varies by opinion, but one could compare the virtues of confidence, charisma, determination, and inspiration to be used as bases.…

I do believe that I am a leader; in fact, I would say I am an outstanding leader. Throughout my career, I have served as a Team leader, Squad Leader, and Section Leader. I have led over seventy mounted and dismounted combat patrols in Afghanistan. Some of my responsibilities included;…

When I drum I lose track of time, the different types of rudiments put together in all different orders makes me happy. When I try to get faster at drumming I play to all sorts of songs. I’ll get lost for hours drumming. Over time I hope to join some of the best marching groups in DCI and WGI. I hope to join groups like Matrix, Phantom Regiment, or Blue Coats. When I want to learn more I’ll ask people like Mr.Reynolds or Dave our percussion instructors. My favorite part about drumming is how with the right touch you can make a bunch of loud noises and crashes become into beautiful music. I would like to learn how to play the actual drum set instead of just the marching snare. Over my marching band career I played lot of different pieces and…

Over that time, I dealt with an anxiety disorder and depression. Both kept getting in the way of my day-today life and things got really hard, but band helped me learn to cope. By the end of the season, I had gone from not being able to control attacks to preventing them all together. I learned that even though things get hard, you can push through it and get to the other side. Along with that, I learned how to deal with problems in an efficient way, and to be more confident in myself not just as a musician, but in who I am, and that being ambitious isn’t a bad thing. Going into band, I wasn’t confident; I was afraid to talk to others and didn’t put myself out there. I would have never wanted to be a drum major or anything like it. Now I’ll try to get to know others, I’ll go out of my way. It has given me goals I never would’ve dreamed I could have, like auditioning for a world class band. Marching band has made me confident in myself and musicianship, become more efficient, ambitious in my goals, more responsible, and built my…

Before I had even started high school I hit a very deep depression. I struggled with it for years. I felt I had no family and no friends. It was a very hard time for me. I didn't enjoy talking about my feelings or being around people due to the fact that I felt I just annoyed those around me. Despite this, I continued doing what I loved most: music. I began marching band my eighth grade year and loved the feeling of being on the field in the lights when our assistant band director would come over the loud speaker announcing the "McClain Marching Tigers and Tigerettes". It helped me find and accept who I am. I gained confidence and learned to lead and understand. It even introduced me to my closest friend whom introduced me to his friend group, giving me the first group of friends I had in my life. I've met so many new people and learned so many new skills throughout my marching career and I look forward to finishing out my senior year with the people who have been there with me from the beginning.…

Sweat drizzles down my skin as it exits my pores trying to cool my heated body. The blood rushes through my veins pumping blood with the consistent pounding of my heart. Every breath, every second, every action, every thought; I am standing where everything counts. Artificial turf and grass crumpled beneath my torn black shoes and the thick silence only cut by the timed chants from afar. This is the last moment I will stand here for this reason. This is the last moment I will stand here with my family. This is the last moment of my marching band career. Many will say that this was a special group of kids, others will say that this year was a show that was made to make it. I, on the other hand, will say that this was because of seven years of dedication.…

I have been waiting eagerly for graduation throughout my senior year, but now that graduation is only a few days away I am sad that my high school days are almost to a close. Band is going to be a major aspect of high school that I am going to miss immensely. For the past seven years I have been a member of the Hannibal Bands. I started out on clarinet but I later picked up the saxophone on the way. Even though I only spent three years in jazz band, I still enjoyed playing in the concerts and our trips to UMSL. However, it is concert band that I am going to miss the most. Concert band has always been my favorite both in middle school and high school. Marching band also had its moments of fun. There's no better way to spend your summer vacation…

Looking back at my high school career, the connections that I have made with peers through marching band prove to be unparamounted. Continuing to participate in marching band at Michigan would allow me to make new friends and connections with people far more diverse than the student body at my school, thus exposing me to new ideas. The time commitment is grand, but this activity has and will continue to advance my skills as a musician, a leader, and make me a more well-rounded person. After four years of dedication, I am interested in pursuing my favorite fall activity at the college level.…

A light sweat trickled down my back as the sun’s rays were beating down on me harshly when Alexa and I arrived at Warner’s Stadium. It was the first football game of the season and I was here helping out the band in the concession stands. For the past few weeks, I have been trying to get Alexa to become a part of the marching lions with her siblings but she keeps on stubbornly refusing. I have brought her with me to talk to some of the members in the band, see how much fun they have, and how close they are to one another. Hopefully we can convince Alexa to join the band tonight.…

“Consistency!” Paul, Adam, and Mr. Dietrich loved to scream this word at us. Band camp was probably the best and the worst days of my life but I would go through it all over again if given the chance. There were times when Paul would get so frustrated with the front ensemble that he would just leave without saying when he would be back or not and whenever he did that it was a bit of a saddening realization. It wasn’t just Paul that got mad like this Adam got just as mad and when Dietrich would get mad like that, it was time to duck and cover. What all of this made me realize though was that practicing is the only thing that will help you get good and sheer talent is never enough. I was dumb enough to ever think that my talent and family history in fine arts was going to cut it. Now though I can say that practice makes perfect and practice is the only thing to make perfect.…

Considering who I am now, this started a huge new chapter in my life. Band is and was amazing, and then I just thought it as a hobby of mine, or some side activity to participate. However, I eventually grew out of that naïve mind set and concluded that band was the best experience that ever happened to me in my life span. In my current life at this time, band is everything to me; it is my way a living, my purpose, and my life. Nonetheless, I would have never gotten to this conclusion of my life without the influences in my surroundings, the uplifting charismas about band, and the never ending lust towards the magnificent aspects about band. In conclusion, being in the music program helped my insecurities and my social…

My whole life I had this passion for being a leader. Honestly speaking, I am not a charismatic type of leader - the kind that everybody likes just because they are funny or charming. I am very hard-working, and I always set my goals high, work very hard to get to the top. My mother always told us that even though we were poor, there were no limits to what we could become. That we needed to be brave when facing every challenge…
