Personal Narrative: Katya
When I was in fourth grade, there was a girl named Katya, she had dirty blond hair, glasses, and a colorful outfit. The first time I talked to her she seemed really kind, so of course we became good friends. There was another girl named Emily, she had brown hair, a headband, and pink shoes. I had known her since first grade, so we were even better friends, best friends. But I could tell that Emily was jealous of Katya, because every time I looked at Emily when I was with Katya she looked at me like I was crazy.

At recess me and Katya would hang out together, and one day, Emily asked if she could play with us, I said “of course!” but as soon as I said that, Katya gave me the most evil glare. Emily and her became arch enemies. Katya would talk behind Emily’s back saying she was “too clingy.” Emily would say Katya was “really mean and annoying.” At this point, I went to talk to the teacher. She told me to stay away from them for the day. So I did.

At recess me and Katya played together as usual. And Emily, asked to play with us again, but this time she asked us to play a game with me and her, all sudden, I heard Katya say the meanest, and loudest, “No!” In less than three seconds Emily was off crying. I felt terrible.

I told Katya to stop, and that she was a being a bully. I went over to Emily and I apologized to emily. To this day, Emily is my best

I was so excited to see her, so I ran up to her and gave her a hug. She then looked at me with disgust and told me that she had new and better friends so she did not want me to talk to her again. She also said that she could not explain anything else because if they saw her with me, they would kick her out of the group. I had no idea what I did wrong, but I was very upset. I tried to talk to her later in the day, but her new friends kept making fun of me. They would call me names and go out of their way to harass me in the hallways and at lunch. They would call me a loser and accuse me of stalking Tanisha. The dynamic of picking on others outside of the group is similar to what Adler and Adler define as “subjugation.” In Alders Peer Power, they explain the different tactics of out-group subjugation. “They like to pick on people of lower status, it tends to excite them” (Adler and Adler 179). Adler and Adler explain, “One of the main things is to keep picking on unpopular kids because it’s fun to do” (Quoted in Adler and Adler 180). The worst part was that Tanisha went along with all of it. I was so upset that my once best friend thought that I was…

While I was waiting, I looked around, and from the window, the sky became darker and darker as the cloud covered the last sunlight. I couldn’t breathe. In about twenty minutes, most parents were there. Then the head teacher started to talk about how seriously we did. She told in front of all these people: “she was the one who cheated teachers and brought her friends out of school. We teachers are responsible for your children’s safety in the school. But who is responsible for that once they are out? Jasmine, can you?” I was shocked. I did not think about that the teacher would blame me for all of this. Everyone in the office was staring at me, and my parents as well. I was ashamed, so ashamed that I wanted to hide, and I can’t stop my tears out. The teacher continued and talked to all of students: “I believed you because you are fifth grade. I thought you are old enough to distinguish right or wrong. But now, I am really disappointed at you guys.” We were still in elementary school, and we were so young to comfort ourselves in this situation. Most of the girls in our group began to sob like me.…
