It is More Than Just a Game…... For anyone that plays basketball knows that it is more than just a sport, more than just a hobby, and more than just a passion that people have. The blood, the sweat, the tears, and the twisted ankles are just the little things that people face while playing the game. The emotions that are associated with the game of basketball make it my favorite past time. I hate when people say “It is just a game”. I believe that basketball has taught me many valuable life lessons and it has also played a significant role in developing me into the successful young woman that I am today; basketball is more than just a game.
Ever since the second grade, basketball has held a special place in my heart. My love

I worked so hard in tryouts to achieve that goal.
Everyday I would give my all, or at least I thought I was. As the tryout days passed me by, I would go home just knowing I made the team. The last day of tryouts came, I looked at the varsity list first only to see that my name wasn’t on itI was crushed. I then looked on the junior varsity list and there I read my name. I wasn’t happy, but at least I made something.
Later on that night, something did not sit well with me being on the Junior Varsity basketball team I felt that I did not reach my goal. I called my coach asking him why I did not make the
Varsity Basketball team, and he soon began to tell me how great of a player I was, but I was just not ready for the varsity level. I tried my best to convince him that I was. He told me that I could practice with the Varsity team that following Monday to prove myself. To make a long story short, I went into that practice ready for the fight. After practice, he came to me and said,
“Welcome to the Varsity team Miss Williams.”
I also believe that basketball is a form of escape from the difficult things in life. Anytime

After I finished high school, I was faced with the question many young people are forced to deal with: “What am I going to do now?” Although I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I knew that basketball had taught me lessons to become successful and had steered my life in the right direction. The same hard work that had turned me into a good student, also turned me into a good basketball player and I was given the opportunity to play at the collegiate level. Basketball allowed me to get my foot in the college door. In this new environment, I could explore many options, and careers, but most importantly, it allowed me to discover my identity. Without basketball, I would not be chasing my dreams of becoming a coach. Even though my playing days are over, basketball has put me in the position where I can still be around the game. My sole concentration is becoming a coach so that I may instill the values basketball taught me into the youth of today. Basketball has given me direction. Basketball gave me inspiration.
Basketball has been my flashlight all of my life, guiding me through the darkness of

I have always love to play basketball. The swish when you make it just right, and the boom of the basketball hitting the floor “are sounds I love”. When I first started playing basketball, my mom and my couch Richard knew that I was expectational. I played with Richard for a few years, then one day he told us about this newspaper ad he saw for a team named “Eugene Fire”. My mom decided to check it out, so she called the coach, Jim. He said I probably won't make the team, but I believed I could. So I would try anyways.…

About a month before try-outs I had to get my act together and start working out. So everyday after school I would go with my friend Trevor to the gym so I could run and get in shape. This was crucial because I hadn’t run much since last summer. After working hard at the gym, another aspect of my game had to be brought up to the next level, shooting. So instead of my daily routine of going to the gym after school, I would go home and shoot on my lacrosse goal. Everyday after school I would at least shoot a little bit in hopes of making varsity in March.…

Tryouts were held every Monday morning. Tuesday morning the list was posted of the girls that made the dance. Everyone that didn’t make the dance stood on the side the entire week during practice and watched. Friday night, the girls dancing took the field and the rest of the girls stood on the side, once again, and watched. Everyone knew our coach was one the hardest around, but I wasn’t scared.…

In 2015, I realized a long standing goal of playing on the varsity lacrosse team as a freshman. In fourth grade when I first started playing lacrosse, I had always dreamed of how far I could go. That dream of mine always stuck with me and it was my motivation to continually get better. When the coaches were separating the players to form the JV and varsity teams, they called my name to the varsity side. The only freshman to be called to the varsity side for the 2015 season. I had doubt and negativity on my shoulders from the returning players just a day before and now here they are congratulating me. They acted as if they were my friends only because they saw something in me that they never had nearly as much of. Talent. My goal had been reached,…

Firstly, I was surprised and disappointed that I didn’t make varsity. All of my friends and I thought I would make the team so I was surprised that I didn’t. That year, I had also been playing soccer out of school and I was on team b which is the second highest team and I thought I had done well in the tryouts, so I figured it would be pretty likely that I would make it. It was also disappointing because I was hoping to play with and against higher level soccer players to improve my game, but I realized that it doesn’t matter as much to whom you are playing against, but to how much effort you put in and the way you play.…

This essay is similar to the freestyle race at a swim meet. This is a fast-paced race that allows the swimmer to swim any stroke. By being able to swim any stroke, the swimmer is able to be creative. Basketball has allowed me to be creative and be myself, which is why I compared these to one another.…

The day I walked into my first gymnastics class ever was at North Crest in 1st grade. I was so excited to finally be able to do gymnastics. All I did was sat tentively listening to my coach and trying everything I was asked to do. Being able to do all the jumps, leaps, and flips my coach asked me to do, showed me that I have the potential to be good at this sport. So after being in gymnastics for 6 years, I decided to try out for the High School team at school. After being evaluated on all my skill levels for 3 days on all events, it was time to figure out who made the Team. Amber, my coach called up name after name to come get there acceptance. Once she got to the last paper I figured I didn’t make the team, but she called my name and I flew right up there. There was no words to describe how happy I was to have made the team my 7th grade year. Usually people do not make the team until they reach their high school years. In every practice we stretch and do lines, then we work on our routines for every event, then at the end of practice we do super intense workouts to get us in shape to be able to compete our routines and to get us in shape to do harder skills. This now brings us to the practices I had the week before my big meet.…

Basketball has been a part of my life since I was the tender age of 5. Ever since the day my dad put that round leather sphere into my hands I haven’t been able to get enough of it. To me basketball isn’t just a sport, but an outlet from schoolwork, a basis of enjoyment, a place where I can socialize and obviously a source of exercise.…

The next day, I decided to not pick up a basketball ever again. Weeks passed by, Months, and still haven’t touched a basketball. My Dad came up to me one day and asked why I haven’t been playing basketball lately. I replied “I gave up on Basketball.” What he told me next I will never forget. He said “Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.” Don’t give up after one loss, get up and work harder. To this day that quote never left my…

As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. He told me that he had noticed my success during the season, and he wanted me to join the varsity team; for the varsity team still had two weeks of practice left before the state tournament. At this moment I've gotten my hopes up and I'm almost certain that I'm going to make the team. When the day of tryouts come, November 4rth, 2012, my alarm goes off and I wake up, get myself situated, say a prayer, grab my favorite sneakers (which at the time was the Under Armour Black Ice : Brandon Jennings Milwaukee Bucks Home Red Strap Colorway), tie them to my backpack, grab a bowl of frosted flakes and sling my backpack onto my scrawny shoulders and hop into my older brothers car so that he could drop me off at school. I’m a little nervous once I’ve finished my school day once the bell rings and the announcements go off saying in a big hefty voice “ALL BOYS PARTICIPATING IN BASKETBALL TRYOUTS PLEASE REPORT TO THE MAIN GYM NO LATER THAN TWO O’FIVE”. I sprint down the hallway and make sure I’m the first one in the gym. After a good two hours of running, doing drills I’ve done before and Scrimmaging I feel exhausted but none the less confident and satisfied with my…
