I considered the gravitas of my actions only once before deciding to bandage a part of my body. I had wondered if girl I sit next to in Sociology lecture would believe the stories behind my injury. I had wondered if my friends would notice the injury and try to aid me as I walked around the bustling city. I had wondered if they would be annoyed and the constant reference to my injuries. I began to question myself as I wrapped the bright blue bandage around my knee. Around once, then twice, and fastened it securely on the back of my leg. I had spent an hour trying to figure out which body part I should bandage. The wrists were too obvious, my back to hidden, my left ankle too obscured by my new Adidas superstars. So I settled on my knee. My knee could play a central character in thousands of stories that could have caused injury. I began to picture a tumultuous decent down the cement stairs of 55 E 10th street, a catastrophic encounter with a street sign marking the fire line as a no-park zone, an awry Uber making direct contact with my kneecap in the middle of a rainy overcast afternoon. I push those thought away instead focusing on the Yoko Ono’s words. I must only make up the story when someone…

For as long as can remember I have had problems with my knee. It all started back in middle school, when we were playing basketball in our math class. My teacher at the time, Mr. Siem, would play with us. On this particular day, we were on opposing teams and he was bringing down the ball. When I went to defend him, he never stopped and he ran into me. His knee landed on mine with all of his weight. I knew right away that something was wrong.…

The game of soccer has always come natural to me. Competing in the game of soccer is what I love to do. Being physical is something I’ve never been scared of. If I’m being completely honest, going in hard on tackles is what I’m known for. Being a physical player is a strength of mine. Being physical in the game of soccer always comes with the risk of getting hurt. Two years ago I took that risk of getting hurt, and getting hurt is exactly what happened.…

The vibration of the basketball hitting the ground is the best feeling the world. Light was shining through the humongous windows onto the worn out gym floor like a flash light. The other teams jerseys were as red as a rose...and as red as the blood pouring out of my mouth. Thats a good story. I am here to tell you about it.…

“We all stray from time to time….and when you do, OWN IT! If you deny it….you are giving up control again.” This can teach a lesson to people struggling with drugs and alcohol. If you deny that you have a problem, you will continue to let these things control your life, but if you own up to it, you can help yourself or get help from others. The quote, from the “I don’t know the Bible…” paragraph, “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant,”’ reflects what I believe in and what I have learned. Growing up I heard many people tell me, “God first, others second, and yourself last.” First of all, these two quotes are telling me to live a faithful life by putting God first. Also, to put others before me and serve them just like Jesus did.…

The machines were beeping and there were pools of blood beside the woman. She was laying in the middle of the floor but nothing could be done. The victim was on the television. The incident wasn’t real, but the experience was undeniable. Medical dramas have become so realistic, that we often blur the line between what is real and what is fictional. On television, hospitals experience abundant traumas, rarely experience death, and doctors are glorified as heroes, whereas in reality it is not as dramatic.…

My senior year of high school I received a traumatic brain injury in October while playing field hockey. What I assumed to be a minor injury with a quick recovery, turned into a yearlong battle to return to normalcy that has left me with lingering effects. The injury not only caused headaches and illness, but it prevented me from using electronics, spending time with friends, going to school, reading, and participating in sports. Amidst all these setbacks I turned to one of my favorite quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita to help me through: “Keep strong and stay determined. You are capable of overcoming the challenge.” I responded to my injury the best I could: with positivity, appreciation, and determination. I used my abundant free time to discover…

In seventh grade I wanted to tryout for volleyball. I was very nervous because I had never played it before. I was super happy when I found out all my friends and I made the team. We had a lot of practices in December to get ready for games in January. I was really nervous for our first game. Our first game was supposed to be right after christmas break ended, but we had a snow day so it was cancelled. I wished it hadn’t been so I could just get it over with, but i was gonna have to wait. We were scheduled for another game later that week. I woke up with a phone ringing and an answering machine saying that school was cancelled due to boiler issues. I sat in bed thinking I had once again gotten lucky and we had no game, I was wrong. We were…

While medical care was available growing up, there were financial or situational periods where it was not necessarily accessible. I am from a single parent family. My mother moved in with my grandparents after her divorce and works two full time jobs to help provide for my brother, grandparents, and I. Since my father went to jail and my grandfather passed, we have had to make many adjustments financially. This was the case due to my father not providing payments for child support for the time he was incarcerated nor occasional months prior. There has also been a complication with my mother and I having our identity stolen, which has created additional problems when applying for governmental aid throughout my undergraduate years. I worked…

Week six was another amazing week that brought new experiences to my plate. On Wednesday evening, my clinical instructor and I ran Sr. Barn Buddies. This is a group of six teenagers that have autism. These individuals are great, but need help with appropriate social interactions and some personal care. Four boys and two girls attend the one and a half hour session every Wednesday evening. I was not really sure how to feel about doing this session because some of them can have behaviors and they are twice my size. These kids were awesome! They each seem to be somewhere different on the spectrum and all have something to offer to one another. These kids need help with socializing with each other, when they are at school or in the community. We worked on a project together, making sail boats that we could have a discussion about. If one of them needed help with part of it, they had to ask nicely. They could ask Duane or myself for help or ask one another for help. It was pretty neat to see them ask questions, offer advice and for myself to witness the positive interaction throughout the evening.…

Trauma: a very difficult or unpleasant experience that causes someone to have mental or emotional problems usually for a long time. Have you ever experienced a trauma? I made it nearly nineteen years without enduring a traumatic experience. Yes, an affair leading into a divorce is considered a trauma. When the man I grew up idolizing left my family for a twenty-year-old girl, it left me mentally and emotionally unstable. As many times as my parents told me that their problems were their problems and that they shouldn’t affect me; this affected me. My life before the affair was great and carefree, however, now I’m not sure that I’ll ever get back there. It is literally as if I lived a different life before the trauma.…
