Icing My Arm
Failure was not an option. If I wanted to play quarter back, I knew what I needed to do.
Playing quarter back for Heritage High School’s (HHS) Junior Varsity team required an immense amount of perseverance, versatility and dedication. It all began at the HHS football field. My parents arranged for coaching lessons with Coach Fogelstrom, who is a Los Medanos

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

I considered the gravitas of my actions only once before deciding to bandage a part of my body. I had wondered if girl I sit next to in Sociology lecture would believe the stories behind my injury. I had wondered if my friends would notice the injury and try to aid me as I walked around the bustling city. I had wondered if they would be annoyed and the constant reference to my injuries. I began to question myself as I wrapped the bright blue bandage around my knee. Around once, then twice, and fastened it securely on the back of my leg. I had spent an hour trying to figure out which body part I should bandage. The wrists were too obvious, my back to hidden, my left ankle too obscured by my new Adidas superstars. So I settled on my knee. My knee could play a central character in thousands of stories that could have caused injury. I began to picture a tumultuous decent down the cement stairs of 55 E 10th street, a catastrophic encounter with a street sign marking the fire line as a no-park zone, an awry Uber making direct contact with my kneecap in the middle of a rainy overcast afternoon. I push those thought away instead focusing on the Yoko Ono’s words. I must only make up the story when someone…

I had some experiences, such as assisting in the transporting of individuals going on scheduled activities, helping them bath, dress, oral hygiene, toilet, feed and groom, ensuring the environment is free of safety hazards by correcting any hazards found and reporting them to the supervisor, observing persons served for signs and symptoms of disease, injury, reactions to medications, interacting them, and entertaining them by dancing and singing with them. I would like to serve this population as a medical doctor,…

For as long as can remember I have had problems with my knee. It all started back in middle school, when we were playing basketball in our math class. My teacher at the time, Mr. Siem, would play with us. On this particular day, we were on opposing teams and he was bringing down the ball. When I went to defend him, he never stopped and he ran into me. His knee landed on mine with all of his weight. I knew right away that something was wrong.…

Just a few years back, August 2010 to be exact, I sat before a 12 man jury on charges of arm robbery, As the came back reading a guilty verdict, I sat in my chair next to my high paid lawyer feeling just as guilty as the verdict that had just been read before me. Not wanting to break down in tears I looked over at the deputy standing just to the right of me and asked her to escort me back to my cell. On the walk back, I replayed everything in my head that had put me in the situation I was in, I remember it was about 5:00 pm on a Friday evening, me and my ex boyfriend were home cooking dinner. The phone rang and he answered, it was two of his cousins asking if they could come over and hang out? Not thinking the night would end with us behind bars, we…

Dissecting a heart and lung was a neat experience. Holding such a large organ was incredible because I could clearly see the different parts of the heart. The heart my group received was in good condition. It was entertaining to pull out the long strands of blood and watch the heart drain. Playing with the heart was helpful. It made it easier to remember the pathway of blood and separate the right from the left. Holding onto the chordae tendineae was my favorite part. I was speechless at their strength. The most difficult part of the dissection was the smell. I love eating any type of meat so, the familiar smell made me feel…

While medical care was available growing up, there were financial or situational periods where it was not necessarily accessible. I am from a single parent family. My mother moved in with my grandparents after her divorce and works two full time jobs to help provide for my brother, grandparents, and I. Since my father went to jail and my grandfather passed, we have had to make many adjustments financially. This was the case due to my father not providing payments for child support for the time he was incarcerated nor occasional months prior. There has also been a complication with my mother and I having our identity stolen, which has created additional problems when applying for governmental aid throughout my undergraduate years. I worked…

About a month before try-outs I had to get my act together and start working out. So everyday after school I would go with my friend Trevor to the gym so I could run and get in shape. This was crucial because I hadn’t run much since last summer. After working hard at the gym, another aspect of my game had to be brought up to the next level, shooting. So instead of my daily routine of going to the gym after school, I would go home and shoot on my lacrosse goal. Everyday after school I would at least shoot a little bit in hopes of making varsity in March.…

Splat! Another body has hit the cement not too far away from me. Experiencing something like this would by far traumatize me. The sound of someone’s body splattering all over right in front of me is just absurd. My body would be in shock and I wouldn’t even be able to move. I’d stand there empty of words, no thought process, and not know what to do. Consequently, if I can’t think straight I’m most likely going to freak out and eventually it’d lead to me crying in horror, disgust, and fear. If the conditions in the building are so bad that people are jumping to their death is preposterous. No one should ever have to experience something that horrible, ever.…
