As my younger cousin, Travis, walked into the living room of my house, he looked for interesting things he could look at and touch. He started to slowly walk toward the broken, bottom half of our entertainment center. My siblings and I, enjoying our Thanksgiving dinner, watched him carefully as he curiously reached for a handle of one drawer in the entertainment center that contained at least 50 movies. He was so close to opening it when my brother exclaimed, “Careful there! The last guy who did that… he died!” Travis slowly backed away, turned around, and ran to his mother, but the real question is Who died?…

Im Lily and i'm 10 years old. I got taken away from my parents 4 days ago by a police officer. I got thrown in a train with 20 other people. Not knowing where we are going or for how long. I've been on this train for 2 days with little food, not a lot of water, a bucket to use the bathroom, and a bunch of strangers. It smelt like sweat, feces, and feet. Those all together don't go well. We got used to it. We had to deal with it, there were only two small windows so we couldn't all see. We had to stand and people had to take turns laying down. I have no one, wondering what my parents are doing.…

With my heart beating out of my chest, the only thing I could think of was that I did not want to die in Mexico. It was a warm sunny day as we started our ATV adventure outside of the comforts and security of the resort walls. There were 6 of us and we planned to take turns driving. When it was our turn, we could go anywhere we could get the machine. The rental guy was nice enough to loan us his personal iPod, as the machine had a stereo. The iPod was filled with Mexican music of all sorts. How fitting, we realized. What would a Mexican adventure be without the music?…

About the only good thing that came out of me going to jail was meeting this guy named Lev. He was a skinny guy that did not look like he committed a vicious crime. He didn’t he was in jail for looting a dead German on Voinova Street. He was really rude when I tried to make company, but I could understand why because at times like these you can’t trust anyone. I asked him if he was a Jew and he did not appreciate that, because he thought I looked like a Nazi, but after he found I wasn’t he was ok with the question. I gave him some sausage because I figured he would be hungry. We both were wondering why they didn’t shoot us because that was the punishment for both of our measly little crimes. I started to take notes in my journal on Ushakovo’s…

Stephen was selected to be part of an “expansion” project of the Church. The Church continued to get more and more converts and the Apostles needed more help. The apostles asked the disciples to choose seven of them amongst themselves to continue the works of the Apostles. Stephen was selected along with six others. Stephen started committing great works and signs for the people and this upset the Jews. Jews began to argue with Stephen, but Stephen had the Holy Spirit on his side so they couldn’t win a talking battle against him. Therefore, the angered Jews went and convinced people to say “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. Stephen was then brought to the Sanhedrin. He gave his speech to the Jews, but at the end he called the Jews “stiffnecked” people and rightfully accused them of persecuting many prophets. This angered the Sanhedrin and they sentenced him to death. They dragged Stephen out of the city and stoned him. Right before he died, Stephen said “Lord do not hold this sin against them”, he then died. Stephen was very significant because he was considered to be the first martyr.…

When I joined the police department, I knew I wanted to be a part of something great. I wanted to leave a legacy and make an impression on others. I was the first in my family to choose a career in law enforcement, so initially, I was unaware of the challenges this career field came with. My mom was a teacher, and my dad worked in the printing business. Both were successful in their chosen fields, but they were blind to the demands required for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. To be successful, I would need to be observant of those around me who had found success. I would need to mirror their ways and incorporate their habits into my own. I would need to learn from their failures. Most importantly, I would need to learn what made them…

At the tender age of eighteen, I began my career as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Corrections at the Ellis I Unit in Huntsville, Texas, a town with population of only about 30,000 people, but with seven prisons and more than 13,000 inmates. I attended a lengthy and thorough pre-service training academy that was conducted for eight hours every day for two weeks. All trainees were required to live in dormitories together as a group so we could sleep, eat, breathe, and drink corrections. There were about fifty trainees going through the academy at the same time. We were an interesting bunch with about half of the group being young guys like me looking for their first real job and the other half being forty-something military or law enforcement retirees wanting to pursue a new career. There were no women in my academy class. Women at the time could be found in support positions that were primarily clerical, but would not play a direct contact role in male corrections in Texas until 1984 (US Department of Justice, 1991).…
