Personal Narrative: I Am The Emperor Justinian
I am the Emperor Justinian, a christian emperor in the Byzantine Roman Empire from 527-565. I’m well known for creating the Justinian code that established the basis for many of the modern world's justice and legal systems. My accomplishments were the Hippodrome; the imperial palace and most importantly the Hagia Sophia, the cathedral of Constantinople. I had forceful military with the best generals that helped me defeat my most powerful enemies. In fact, I was able to restore the Roman empire and experienced great success in battles.

    What do the accounts of two Roman emperors reveal about the strategies leaders use to improve their institutions? In the first century BCE, Rome was struggling to govern effectively, take care of its citizens, and deal with bordering nations. Augustus came to power in 27 BCE and his reign oversaw the successful transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire (McKay 156). Just before his death in 14 CE, he wrote his autobiography, Res Gestae Divi Augusti, which details the impressive accomplishments of his long career. This text can be compared to an account of another Roman Emperor, Constantine, who served roughly 300 years later, from 306 to 312 CE. Roman historian Eusebius wrote a detailed biography of Constantine, called The Life of the Blessed Emperor Constantine, and this essay will focus on his description of a significant event in Constantine’s life, his conversion to Christianity.     In the year 527, emperor Justinian of the Byzantine empire, “the sleepless emperor”, erected the Hagia Sophia as an ambitious construction project that now remains as a notable example of Christian architecture. It is said that Justinian embarked on various construction projects that thoroughly remade the city of Constantinople after riots against high taxes destroyed the city. His lavish spending resulted in one of the world’s most important examples of Christian architecture; an enormous dome likened to the heavens, silver, gold, gems, precious stones and numerous lamps decorated the Hagia Sophia. It was such a wondrous and holy structure, that some people claimed that its columns alone healed illness.
