Personal Narrative: I Am In The Army As A Platoon Sergeant
I am in the Army as a Platoon Sergeant. I have to manage and plan daily, weekly, and monthly schedules for 45 soldiers. I also have to plan for ranges, platoon training, special programs, my additional duties, and all of those "Hey You" tasks. I have weekly meetings that I have to attend and brief all my statuses. Once I get home from work, I also have to take care of my daily chores.

My time management was limited to me writing down my tasks and completing them, until recently. Normally, I would work on my college courses when I had time throughout the day. Using this practice, I realize that I am not remembering anything I learned that day. I am going to try something different this time around. I am going to schedule

My plan of action is to submit assignments in a timely manner, excel as a student, gain new knowledge that I will utilize as a business owner, and earn a graduate degree in Business. To help achieve my goals, I manage my time wisely, by creating weekly schedules with blocked times that are designated for studying, posting to Discussion Boards, checking emails, and working on assignments. My schedules are created with Google Calendar, because I can synch it with my cell phone. This allows me to set notification reminders that help me focus and keep track of the time I set to accomplish goals.…

With respect to achieving the above objective, I intend to do some reading around the topic of time management. I have already worked my way through the Time Management Topic Guide and picked up some useful ideas and thoughts (for example I have experimented with setting goals and keeping a time log). I have begun to build on that by researching other resources on the internet of which there is a vast selection. In addition, a colleague has recommended the One…

Four years as a Reconnaissance Marine taught me professional pride, integrity, team work and self-determination. I made many lifelong friends in the Corps and learned many lifelong lessons from my mistakes. The Marine Corps taught me to always give all that I had and that the most important thing is to keep pushing forward. Knowing that it is okay to make mistakes as long as we take responsibility and adapt for the future has helped me tremendously both personally and professionally.…

Hi Amber, great to "see" you in another class! Thank you and your family for the years of service. The military life has its own culture, but as you have mentioned the frequent moves allow you to experience numerous geographical locations and their cultures. “You are order to active duty as a member of your reserve component unit for the period indicated unless sooner released or unless extended. Proceed from your current location in sufficient time to report by the date specified. You enter active duty upon reporting to unit home station”. These were the words telling me that I was going to Iraq, to fight and destroy the enemies of the United States of America and face one of my biggest challenges yet. Soon after I received my orders in the mail I had a dilemma, what’s going to happen when I tell my mother and the rest of my family? Have I been taking my family and friends for granted, now that I have this situation in front of me I realize that maybe I should have tried…

I second the fact that lately it has been very crazy. I agree with you about it being very easy to work with people around the world. Although I think that language could get in the way. Growing up I would always listen to my dad speak of his war stories, but I never fully grasped the meaning of what it all meant. As I got older, I was able to understand his words about his time in the Vietnam War, from near death experiences to his most thrilling moments of life. My dad always follows up his life experiences and adventures with “But you have to do well in school, go to college, and get a good job, because unfortunately I was unable to.” Following the war, my dad and his family moved to California and he was thrust into work as a manicurist. Being that young men were forced into recruitment during the war- my dad, a college student at the time, was enlisted into the South Vietnam army and thus was unable to finish college.…

I always wanted to challenge myself, and for some reason I thought joining the United States Marines Corps would do that. I definitely got way more than I bargained for, and immediately regretted the decision I had made. My recruiter had a major influence on helping make the choice to join the Marines, and I will always feel some sort of resentment towards him. But while we go through these challenges, it is important to realize that they are what help define us as human beings. The hardest challenge that I have endured so far in my life was the three months I spent on Paris island, SC. The torture that takes place at Paris Island affected me not only physically, but mentally as well. With each month that passes during the three-month time…

My army career was right on track. I had been in the 3 years at this point, coming up on 4, and already had completed air assault school, been awarded my expert infantry badge, and had one 15 month deployment under my belt. I was assigned to the scout platoon sniper section and was waiting for a sniper school packet to get final approval from the company commander. I had been studying for the sergeant promotion board for months. I knew that study guide like the back of my hand, I knew whatever question I was asked by the Command Sergeant Major I would have an answer for. I went to the promotion board that morning and blew it out of the water. My dress uniform was perfect. No one was able to find a single deficiency. The Soldiers Creed and the…

The purpose of this paper is to share my first deployment experience as the first sergeant. Serving in a war zone is an experience you will never forget. As a result of my first deployment to Afghanistan as a first sergeant, I practiced a new perspective on life, instilling trust in my Soldiers and NCOs to continue the mission. Perspective that I developed from the beginning with the pre-deployment preparation at the National Training Center (NTC) through the actual deployment to Afghanistan and finally over the redeployment home.…
