Growing up I had two loving parents, they always wanted the best possible for me. School was always challenging for me. I never liked it, and I never had a good work ethic. It started when I was young, my parents never made me do chores, and they always rewarded me for minimal efforts of work, and it did not help me in the long run. I had a very easy life growing up, but being spoiled does not help when you become an adult. It’s very hard to just gain a work ethic, it takes a lot of time and effort.…

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

From being brought up in a family of hard day in and day out workers, I understand the concept of working for what you want to achieve in life. Ever since being introduced to welding in my earlier teen years, I fell in love with it. There is something magical about melting two pieces of metal together at 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Growing up in a family of 2 brothers,…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…

While visiting the College Foundation of North Carolina website I was not surprised in my answers. My Holland code was CES, meaning conventional, enterprising, an social. Also, I was able to find out my work values and they are achievement, recognition, and relationships. However, I do feel like there were more on the list that I felt were also part of my work values. I definitely feel like these relate to my degree and also my professional career. It would be very beneficial because while getting my associate and bachelor degree and then leading to my career as an Occupational Therapist it will become very helpful by being organized, working with people and helping others. While being an Occupational Therapist my work values will mean everything…

Most people work from their late teens into their 60's, saving for life's needs. Imagine working your whole life, just to die poor. This happened to female workers in the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was a period of major industrialization that took place during the late 1700s and early 1800s, and in the 1880's, this movement spread to Japan. Did the cost of working in silk factories outweigh the benefits of being a worker in the industry? For the female silk workers of Japan, the factory experience contained more costs than benefits. Women workers not only lived their life's poor, they also were overworked, underpaid, and were taken advantage of.…

Gender was always a very tricky subject for me until I finally realized gender and sex are two different things. So, gender was never something I ever really thought about. I was a girl and that was that. It was definitely assumed for me based on my biological “label” of female at birth. I grew up with two sisters so there were lots of baby dolls and Barbies. But as I got older, aspects of other gender(s) became aware to me that I decided I wanted to incorporate into my own gender. I did not like wearing dresses so that “norm” was thrown out of my wardrobe options. I was much more comfortable in pants and a t-shirt playing outside. I became very interested in sports and always wanted to be outside shooting baskets or throwing around…

My mom taught me to live by the Golden Rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have lived by this rule all my life. I have never had a problem getting along with others and treating them with respect until I started my nursing career as an LPN. I started working at the local hospital, working night shift. I really enjoyed going into work, helping the patients with their needs. I enjoyed visiting with them and finding out what would make their stay better. Then one day the supervising nurse in charge of the floor took me aside and told me to stop visiting with the patients. I was thinking to myself okay there has got to be a good reason behind this. She told me the patients need their sleep and they don’t need me to visit with them and keep them awake.…
