Personal Narrative: How Volunteering Changed My Life
When I was younger, I was in Girl Scouts for a number of years. Along with the camping and games, it was mandatory that we volunteer for a certain amount of hours. I would usually volunteer with my troop to work on community gardens and other small tasks similar to that. I did not enjoy volunteering because I was too young. I was forced upon something that I did not want to do. I just wanted to have fun and did not understand the concept of community service. Now that I am done with Girl Scouts, I have moved on to a different stage of my life. I now know that volunteering is worth the time and effort. After years of taking up various volunteering positions, I have finally found one that means something to me, one that has changed my whole life. About a year ago, my mother convinced me to start volunteering at the elderly care facility that my grandparents go to, the Program of All-inclusive …show more content…
Before I started volunteering I was often depressed and anxious, I was prescribed with medications to take for it as well. I would spend days in bed, curled up in a ball because I was so depressed. But after a while of volunteering I gained my peace of mind back, volunteering relaxed me and helped eliminate any negative feelings. The self-satisfaction one receives from helping another combats anxiety more than any medication ever could. Through this experience, I have also become more patient. I know now that not everything can happen quickly and every so often I must wait for things to happen.
Overall, volunteering at PACE has taught me more lessons than I ever believed possible. I have become a happier person and I appreciate life more than I did before. I have made new friends and conquered many obstacles, making me truly proud of who I have become. I plan to continue volunteering as long as my schedule allows me to. I cannot wait for the future of my volunteer work and for the experiences that will come with

Carefully, with a shaky hand, I successfully inserted an insulin pump into my left thigh. I counted every carbohydrate I ate and timidly calculated my carbohydrate/insulin ratio. The liquid I was distributing throughout my body was not in fact insulin, but saline. Volunteering as a diet aide at Camp Carefree, a children’s summer camp for type one diabetics, gave me the opportunity to know what it felt like to step into these innocent children’s shoes.…

Whether it was holding the door open for the person behind me or simply telling them to have a nice day, my favorite thing to do has always been to make people smile. In elementary school, more often than not, I assumed the role of class helper. This entailed staying after class parties to help clean up messes or spending extra time at recess to make sure all of the kickballs were in their specific spots. As I've grown up, it only makes sense that my love for helping people in any shape or form has translated into a love for volunteering. Whether it is tutoring elementary school children or helping run a clothing drive, the numerous altruistic tendencies that have been instilled in me through volunteer work will forever shape who I am as a…

Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

The years I spent in middle school and high school have opened my eyes to the field of Social Work. I volunteered whenever I got the chance. I was in Student Council and from that, I donated a lot of my time to help with that and other organizations. Throughout those years, I was rewarded my senior year with an award for the most community service hours. My father works for the Michigan State Police, and through him, I volunteered with a lot of organizations through NCRESA. Halloween Hallow, Santa’s story book, and Kids Day were all different events that I volunteered for an absolutely loved. Now, I am a junior and I have still kept busy with volunteering. My freshmen year, taking SW100, we were required to do 15 hours of community service. I volunteered my 15 hours at the Marquette Jacobetti Veterans Center. Volunteering there has very much impacted my life. Whenever I went to see the veterans I was so thankful to them. Listening to their stories has been one of my favorite volunteer memories. In fact, my older sister Jennifer and I are thinking about going and talking to the volunteer coordinator to see if we can come back and continue. Another activity is Northern’s Make a Difference Day which has always been a great experience. Seeing how grateful those who we raked yards for were was truly wonderful. I will continue with Make a Difference Day! My sophomore year, I signed up through NMU’s volunteer center…

I have the experience of volunteering for two times. Both schools that I went to are very poor school as most of students come from neighbor countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia, whom their parents immigrate illegally to Thailand for working opportunity. Also the school director tries to help this children by give them opportunity to study without tuitions fee, which is make financial support from the government is not enough. Therefore, my friends and I went to give the necessary stuffs such as sport facilities and some amount of money that my friends and I did the donation from kind-hearted people. We also educated them in various topics such as teach them English daily use sentences and basic economics in term of how to saving. The reason that I choose to teach them how to saving is I found that their family financial status is not good, so it is necessary for them to use money correctly and make sure that they will not overspending.…

For some reason, I always go into things with a negative perspective, it’s somewhat of a defense mechanism. My experience as a UCSF Mission Bay Volunteer completely diminished this defense mechanism. At first, I questioned volunteering at UCSF Mission Bay Hospital. I questioned if delivering newspapers and hot beverages would have any effect on patients. I was also scared and sad by the thought of being in the hospital each week and seeing how sick and upset people are. The main reason I wanted to become a volunteer was to gain an experience in the medical field. Little did I know, I would gain a lot more from being a UCSF volunteer. I never really thought I would form relationships with patients, visitors, and staff.…

Last year, I went to Pinetree Preschool, where there is nothing but young children. That was an experience I enjoyed and found so valuable and opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities of children. This year, I chose the complete opposite of Pinetree and I volunteered at Primrose, a retirement home for people who suffer from alzheimer's or dementia. At Primrose, I saw a completely different side of human life. That may seem like an exaggeration but I tend not to spend much time with people much, much older than me, as they were at Primrose. I learned an incredible amount of patience and understanding and just life in general during my time volunteering at Primrose, that I could not had received anywhere else.…

    Community Service

Before actually partaking in community service, I always thought of it as a means of overworking students for the employers to save money, but after actually getting myself involved in it...I realized that doing community service is actually a privilege for us the volunteers. It gives us an opportunity to gain experience, widen our skills and get a better understanding of the hard labour and it is a process that essentially goes into the outcome of a product or service. Community service has literally made me realized how little I contribute to my country, how little I know about my country and has brought to my attention and conscience that I should try my best to assist more—free of wage—in the continuous growth of my economy. Doing my service at St. Rose Nursery, has opened my eyes to the not so easy process of growing flowers, plants and trees; for example how important fertilizers are and what a big difference the right fertilisers make—and also the different types of fertilizers and their functions . Before I never really understood the beauty of them nor did I realize how much work went into nurturing and harvesting them, but now I am more aware and more concerned about the health of trees and how they are treated and even situated in a pot or the ground.…
