Personal Narrative: How Volleyball Changed My Life
I have played volleyball for ten years but did not play competitively until four years ago. I decided I needed more competition than what recreational volleyball was offering so I began to play club. After two years of great coaching I had become a very good all-around player until my knee injury. You never expect yourself to get injured but once it happens you begin thinking what you could’ve done to prevent it. We were playing an away game and our team was down but we were coming back. My coach and parents told me this was probably my best game all season until I landed on a teammates foot coming down from a block. All I can remember is hearing and feeling my knee pop and then falling to the ground. Typically, when I get injured I can suck …show more content…
This changed how I now approach situations, by being more proactive instead of waiting to do it later. The nine months without volleyball seemed excessively long. I had never gone that long without playing the sport that I love, but with my time off I was able to learn about the coaching side of volleyball. I was able to grow very close to my father, who is a volleyball coach, which he says helped me to become a well-rounded player. Once I was able to come back it was hard. I had to relearn the approach to accommodate my weaker knee. I spent many long days in the gym trying to get back to how I used to be able to play, sometimes to the point of tears since I couldn’t improve. Eventually I began to play like I normally would making me confident for when I tried out for the varsity team in the fall of my senior year. I was able to return and make it onto the varsity team and then decided to play one final season of club with my dad as the coach. I thought I was safe from reinjuring until one tournament where I landed and my knee popped. It felt like my world was falling apart again. Luckily I had not retorn my ACL but this made me put more work into strengthening both of my knees. I am glad to now be out of this journey and on to a new journey in my

A memory from my athletics that will stick with me forever was the last time I was able to lace up and play basketball on our home court. We played a long time rival, Aquin. The game was down to the wire and I was able to tie the game with 24 seconds left. Then we got the ball back and Ellie was fouled with about a second left, which if anyone on our team were to be put on the line, I would choose her. She went up and swooshed the first shot! Then, since Aquin wouldn't be able to get the rebound, make it down the court, and shoot with the time left, coach told her to miss the second shot. Ellie then winded up and chucked the ball right off the backboard so they ended up getting the ball out of bounds anyway. We blocked the throw in, and I ran…

A few hours later when I went to the hospital, I discovered that I had torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Initially, I did not know what to expect from the situation, but I came to realize how much it would affect my life. The ACL functions as a ligament that connects the tibia and the femur. It provides stability in the knee, and with this injury, I could not participate in competitive soccer for 10 months. To undergo this painful experience at such a young age is extremely difficult; however, I chose to embrace the situation rather than let it destroy me. I could no longer play the sport I loved, but I could not change anything about that; I could only control my attitude in this predicament. I went above and beyond at every physical therapy appointment, no matter how strenuous/painful the workouts were. Times frequently came…

When I first came to Lake Highland I tried out for the girl’s golf team, but I was not experienced or skilled enough to make it on. This was a devastating moment for me, but I realized that I needed to try harder and work harder to make it on the team the next year. I became much more skilled and was able to make the team with ease. What the failure told me was that if I got knocked down then I would have to work hard to get back up. This lesson was very crucial to me my junior year of high school. During the golf season I severely injured my wrist. This injury put me out of the game for six months. I gained arthritis in my wrist, but I remembered what happened to me in seventh grade and worked hard to regain my skills. I made the team the…

For as long as I remember, I have been raised with a basketball hoop. This hoop stood firmly, looking down at the trees secured by patches of cement in my backyard, in my neighborhood, Dorchester. This hoop was my center of faith and tranquility surrounded by gunfires, shattering windows, car alarms. As a girl, I learned not to adventure any place else other than this hoop because going beyond its faded lines on the concrete is an unknown world full of hazards and danger. And when I did cross these seraphic lines, I could sense the bittersweet emotions running throughout the neighborhood, my home.…

After boosting myself up, I finally decided to try out. I was told we would have a new coach. I was a little scared that we wouldn’t have our old coach anymore. Also, when the team was mad a little after, our old coach came back just in time. Knowing that if we had a chance to get our old coach back was wonderful. Because nothing would be the same. Every sport and routines are different from the beginning to the end whole different start.…

The vibration of the basketball hitting the ground is the best feeling the world. Light was shining through the humongous windows onto the worn out gym floor like a flash light. The other teams jerseys were as red as a rose...and as red as the blood pouring out of my mouth. Thats a good story. I am here to tell you about it.…

I joined MYB in 5th grade. I wanted more of a competition league after coming from Upward basketball. The first year my team was horrible and everyone went their separate ways after the season. I joined Dave Buffenbarger’s team the following year hoping for a better outcome. A lot of the girls on that team were some of my close friends, and some were not. This was not a problem as we quickly became close. MYB gave me the chance to make new friends through their league and become even closer with my old friends. With a few players always coming and going after each season, I ended up playing for Dave up until my senior year. Being on Dave’s team for so long gave me the chance to grow close to my teammates. Being with my team for many years and…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…

The part of my life I am about to recount was during the summer of 2014 when I was the starting pitcher and third hitter for the Drexel Hill Little League tournament team. Now, baseball is america’s pastime and in my words is the greatest sport on god's green earth. A little background on the sport is it’s a game of nines. Nine starting players on each team try to score as many runs in nine inning by hitting a nine inch baseball coming in at an average speed of ninety miles per hour. This leaves the batter with about .16 Seconds to react to the pitch and hit it with all their power with a bat about 36 inches long and 2.75 Inches in diameter. I was first introduced to the sport when I was only seven years old and my father, who is also a huge…

As I grew up, I had a passion for swimming and playing volleyball. I was on the Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Swim Teams in high school, and could not wait until my senior seasons of my favorite sports. Unfortunately, the third week of my volleyball season I was informed that I had fractured my talus and also had a few stress fractures. At that point I had never been more devastated. Through all the doctor appointments and therapy with my schools trainer I held my head high. I still attended every single game, practice and tournament with my team. I still led them in cheers, and poured my heart to them from the bench. It felt like a knife stabbing through the heart watching from the bench, but I had to be them for them, we were family.…
