Personal Narrative: How To Ride A Bike
When I was in 1st grade I wanted so badly how to ride a bike. I would watch my friends ride their bikes, and all I wanted to do is ride with them. The problem was not the bike, I had a bike. The problem was that I tried, and tried, and tried. Every time I tried, I would fail, and it didn’t feel like I was getting closer to being able to ride my bike. I would get on my bike, and get myself all pumped up, and take off. And within seconds, I would be laying on my face, on the pavement. I was giving up hope.

At this in my life I lived on Fort Carson Army Post in Colorado. Families are constantly moving to this post or away from this post. During my 2nd grade year, a new family moved to our cul-de-sac. This was a large family, this family had 4 kids, all adopted except one. The adopted children had all been adopted from rough homes. One of their sons, Manolito, was in my class. We became close friends with each other. When we would play, his older brother Zack who was his biological brother, also adopted, would play with us.

The three of us, Manolitio, Zack, and I, would everything together. At first, since I couldn’t ride a bike, we would walk almost everywhere, but Fort Carson is a big post. They both knew how to ride a bike, so they got sick of me always having to walk everywhere. They decided they would

I started to watch all the kids as they got to the school. The older kids would use to start slowing down, use the brakes to stop, and simply hop off their bikes. Some of the older kids at the time would “drift” to stop; by that I mean they would slam on their brakes and turn the front wheel, moving in a fluid motion like a drift on a car and/or motorcycle. After successfully learning to ride the bike, something I almost thought would be impossible, I knew I could learn how to use the brakes. Then I started realizing I could do so many things on my bike, and eventually I

I was determined to show my dad that I could do it. That I could beat my older brother in something. That I could be one of the cool kids. I spent countless days trying to learn how to ride a bike. Then one day I decided it was enough. Training wheels are going to need to come off and I am going to need to learn how to balance myself one day. I went into our garage and I had taken out an open ended wrench and I began to unbolt the training wheels that I felt had been restraining me from my full potential of bike riding. I have had enough of the “safe” route of learning how to ride a bike. I had ditched the helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and the…

Riding a bike without training wheels is a uniquely exciting and yet intimidating experience in nearly every child’s lifetime. Many can still remember the anticipation felt when watching the wheels on their bikes disappear one by one; many recall the slight uneasiness that came with gripping the handlebars for the first time and feeling the tremble of the transformed object beneath them. Of course, such a transition rarely comes easily and is often accompanied by an endless supply of band-aids and tears. However, after all is said and done, the struggles and the wheels are almost always stored away and forgotten. Similarly in life, it is important to accept challenges and be willing to set goals that exceed one’s comfort zone. As human beings, we often find ourselves dependent on the safety of our “training wheels,” and are burdened by the limitations we place on ourselves. However, it is imperative that we learn to break free of these borders and pursue higher goals as sources of personal growth. By overcoming our fears, we may discover hidden strengths and talents and defeat the obstacles that…

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

The day I took off on my 4 wheeler, and left my Mom and Dad in the dust. It started out awesome and fun, then turned out to be very scary. It was July 4, 2013, my family and I loaded up our 4 wheelers for a fun day in the great outdoors. We all unloaded our 4 wheelers, then took off out into the desert. I wanted to see how fast I could go around the sharp corners on dirt roads. It was so much. I was having so much fun seeing how fast I could drive my 4 wheeler, around the sharp dirt road corners, I never looked back.…

A famous basketball player once stated, "In order to become better, you must push yourself to do the things you could not do yesterday." This quote supports many different aspects of life. Once one thing is mastered, you must keep going in order to grow and improve. In order to grow in intelligence, talent, and in life in general, you must go out of your comfort zone. For example, Kindergarten is the first big step a student takes to learning. In this grade, I began learning the alphabet and small numbers. Just six years later, I started putting letters and numbers together in basic algebra. If I had stopped learning after completing the alphabet, I would not have made in very far. Instead, I went beyond the what now seems like…

I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.…

Most teenagers do not have a clue about what they want to be when they grow up. Most young adults also do not know where their path is in life. Even some full-blown adults are still trying to figure out their purpose. I was lucky. I knew exactly where I belonged from about the time I was seven up until now, at the decently young age of nineteen. I do not see my path changing anytime soon; in fact, I know it will never change. But, I did not just wake up one day as a child and know what my path was, while that would be impressive. Defining moments in one’s life defines who they are. There were lots of things I experienced in my life that made me realize my purpose, my absolute passion. I had four of these defining moments in my short span of…

I was a cross country runner for all four years of my high school career. Regardless of how many races I ran, each one was just as nerve racking as the first. It has been years since I have ran a cross country race, but I can still relive the memory like it was yesterday. Cross country was not just a sport for me; it was exhilarating and challenging. The crowds of supporters swarmed together between the bright green hills and waited on the soft turf of the golf course for the race to start. I remember standing at the starting line, waiting in anticipation for the ear-splitting crack of the gun, and the light floating smell of gun powder. I could almost feel the anxious and pounding heart beats of the runners around me. My muscles were taut…

As we grow older we tend to forget the memories that brought us the most happiness; looking back I would have never thought one of these memories would be the start of a new passion. It all started on my sixth birthday, my parents had brought me to the local motocross track, and this probably was a big mistake on their part. After seeing the dirt bikes flying through the air and the smell of the bikes as they had just been started, I knew this was my passion and desire to become the best motocross racer I could be. Begging for that first motorcycle everyday before my birthday. Finally the big day came, my sixth birthday, most kids would ask for a toy gun or something to play in a sand box. I decided a dirt bike was on my wishful list to mom and dad. I can remember opening up gifts inside, clothes from gram and papa, toys from family friends, and everything but that dirt bike I wanted oh so badly. Finally mom and dads gifts came, I opened them all up but wasn’t getting any hints that I had a marvelous masterpiece of machinery waiting for me somewhere, just somewhere I hoped. My parents tricked me thinking I hadn’t gotten a moms worst nightmare of a gift. But, I can tell you, It didn’t go unnoticed. After I realized opening the wrapping paper was the best thing I got to experience I made my way outside. I stepped off the deck not expecting what I was about to see; there it was, a brand new Yamaha PW 50 with all the amenities a six year old could possibly want. The bike was a pearl white that shined in the sunlight, I can remember looking at the black wheels like they were made of pure gold. The bike was just what I had been dreaming about for many, many nights. Who knew that still today, I would feel the same way receiving a new bike year after year, the experience hasn’t changed I have just learned to appreciate the endless amounts of time, and thousands of dollars my parents…

I headed to my first class which just so happened to be my favorite subject, English. The hallways were very wide but when filled with students I felt like I had to shove my way through just to get to my locker. The lockers were a mixture between Gray and purple. The school colors were supposed to be purple and silver but there was no way that these lockers could be considered. I took a look at the little piece of paper that the lady in the office had given me and tried out the combination on my locker. It took me about five minutes to open it and after struggling for that long I was a little irritated so when it did open, it flew open and slammed into the locker next to mine. I held my breath and hoped that nobody had noticed. I took a long deep breath and slowly opened my eyes again. Luckily I was still standing alone and nobody around was looking at me. I put my extra books and notebooks into the locker and and closed it as quietly as I could.…

A few months of living in front of the TV in a lazy boy chair my doctor informed me that I could slowly start getting back into the swing of things. I wanted to get back on a horse sinse the day I came home from the hospital, and that day had finally come. I kept feeling the same way that I did when I was leaving for my first rodeo by myself, so nervous. Learning or doing something new always makes me a bit nervous, and getting back on a horse was no…
