Personal Narrative: How Sports Changed My Life
I don’t have the pleasure of remembering sports I played as a child or teenager, but I do know the profound impact sports have had on my adult life. I was struggling to reconnect with who I was when I was younger. Many ways were suggested on how I should go about this, but my favorite suggestion came from my family. They showed me many pictures and videos of me playing sports, horsing around with team mates, and holding trophies or awards. In every shred of those digital memories, there was an unmistakable happiness in my eyes, and in my smile. This immediately drew me in. From that moment on I immersed myself in reinvigorating my once prominent passion for sports. I went and talked with old coaches on mine, as well as old team mates to see if they could give me any information on how what type of athlete I once was. It was astonishing to hear how much passion I had for something, that was no …show more content…
Sunday mornings start off with the typical go to church, because your mother says so, but then it blossoms into a full day of eating homemade meals, watching football, making our own baseball highlights, reenacting favorite game scenes and getting into heated debates about certain calls or plays. Even though it sounds insane, the debates that are started over simple rivalries and traditions are discussed with such fire that I can’t help but feel the intensity, and become completely invigorated. All of this takes place while sitting in a room with pictures, plaques, medals, and trophies from all members of our family. Signed balls, bats, jerseys, collector cards, from my dad’s favorite teams also adorn the walls. Our sports den was the one room in our house that will always perfectly depict the core that not only bonds my family, but helps define us as

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

One sport that got my eye was baseball my senior. I love the feeling of having to be out on the on the field saying nothing but chewing gum or spitting out sunflower seeds. Having to make quick actions that can win or prevent the enemy from scoring. Having to go up to bat I always had a game face. If I took a swing and would miss I would close my eyes in failure to ashamed to look at my coach and team. However if I had got a base hit I would run not looking anywhere but to the base…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

I loved baseball, but was not proficient in any position. I couldn’t hit, catch, or throw no matter how much I practiced. I realized this when I sat on the sidelines and watched my team play game after game. It was frustrating to know that I was not skilled enough to play, and because of that I gave up sports for good. At that moment, I felt like I did not fit in with my family. We had nothing in common because sports…

There are over seven billion people on this Earth, so what is it that makes me so different? I wear Nike, I drive a car, I play video games, I have chores, and could be considered a pretty normal person. I love, I laugh, I get angry, and I have emotions just like every other human being. The one thing I heavily identify with is football. For as long as I can remember I’ve played ball, and made some great friends along the way. The picture in the top left is a great representation of this. Football has taught me lessons of leadership, perseverance, toughness, how to deal with the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. (Bottom left: aftermath of beating Staley) Above all else, the best thing it has taught me was loyalty. Not only loyalty to a cause, but loyalty to my brothers, and ultimately my family. Football has created a foundation for my character, and without it I am certain I would not be the same person I am today.…

In baseball there is an enigma of a pitch called the knuckle ball, which is very difficult for batters to hit because the the ball moves unpredictably in different directions. Often time it feels like life is like trying to hit a home-run off a knuckle ball. When this happens, When life throws us something unexpected we must learn to adapt and respond appropriately.. I learned this when first entering choir as a sophomore with the firm notion that being a bold and strong leader was always the best way to be. Life was about to pitch me a crazy surprise.…

The dispassion I had towards Baseball was taking notice by my dad. He said, “You don’t like baseball don’t you…” I sadly accepted it and I felt the response would let him down. To my surprise, my dad responded by saying, “You don’t have to play baseball if you don’t want to. You can do whatever makes you happy.” Soon after conceding to not liking baseball, I went straight back to my favorite sport, soccer. Immediately, I felt much happier attending each practice and this gave me the drive to develop as a better player. Little did I know that my dad’s advice would still motivate me to this…

The part of my life I am about to recount was during the summer of 2014 when I was the starting pitcher and third hitter for the Drexel Hill Little League tournament team. Now, baseball is america’s pastime and in my words is the greatest sport on god's green earth. A little background on the sport is it’s a game of nines. Nine starting players on each team try to score as many runs in nine inning by hitting a nine inch baseball coming in at an average speed of ninety miles per hour. This leaves the batter with about .16 Seconds to react to the pitch and hit it with all their power with a bat about 36 inches long and 2.75 Inches in diameter. I was first introduced to the sport when I was only seven years old and my father, who is also a huge…

I stand on the sidelines of the football field pretending to listen to Coach Lewis give our team a lecture. We had lost our last two games due to “me not playing” as my brother Donovan claims. I was sitting in my freshman geometry class, talking to some friends about injuries. We were talking about how none of us have ever gotten injured in our entire life. I had been playing sports since I was in the sixth grade, and nothing ever happened. In my life I had never broken a bone. I had never even sprained an ankle. I had never worn any kind of brace, taped an ankle, or talked to a trainer about any muscle issue or pain issue. When kids would lay on the court, I always thought they were fine or looking for a little attention. My thought was that they needed to rush off the court because they were dripping sweat all over the hardwood floor, and they were taking too much time up. I used to assume they were killing our momentum when they would fall down and cry because some schools…
