Personal Narrative: Growing Up My Environment
Growing up my environment was constantly changing, although my blood related siblings and mom remained the center part of my life. I was raised in twelve different homes, almost all of them in the DFW area. My parents divorced when I was very young and from that point on my siblings and I were always moving from one house to another. It never bothered me that we were always moving, it was exhilarating getting to experience new places. Although I was never able to make deeply rooted connection with my new environments because in the back of my mind I knew we wouldn't be there long, even if I was told this would be our last home. Each time I predicted correctly, it was never our last home. My environment forced me to grow up fast and learn how to play the cards i've been dealt. I can thank my mom for that, through it all she has taught me to have a positive outlook on life and to live it to its fullest potential. She gave us unconditional love, and has always strived to give us everything she possibly could, yet she lacked the income to adequately do so. …show more content…
I watched my mom work nonstop in an effort to ensure my siblings and I had food on the table, proper education, and lived in a safe environment, but effort only gets a person so far when there is a lack of a college degree. We drifted from home to home but it was only a matter of time before we were evicted and had to move into her boyfriend's house nearly an hour away from

I am not going to start this off with a quote because that's what everyone else is doing. I am Avery Peak and I hate doing things someone has already done. I like being creative in my own way, that's why I have a grain shoot for an exhaust in my truck and rolling on 37inch mud tires.…

When asked to write about a childhood experience most people think of the time they lost their first tooth when they were 6, or about the time they started school when they were 5, however, I’m going to write about summer. It wasn’t just any summer it was the summer that I went to the lake with my Dad and Papa. I was about 4 and couldn’t be any more excited about what was going to happen…

Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…

In order to reduce my ecological footprint, I can use public transportation one more day per week rather than driving to the local stores and restaurants I frequent. Not only will it save me money on gas, but it also lead to less carbon emissions that produce and cause harm to the Earth. I can also fly less. I tend to fly to near destinations, like Massachusetts and the Carolinas. I think it could more fun if I took a road trip with family or friends or even take the Amtrak train. Last but not least, I will purchase products that are produced organically or with less packaging. Both produce just about the same kind of quality without having to use the needless materials that is mostly thrown away rather than recycled.…

My family environment has influenced me a lot especially when my siblings were born. I am the oldest out of five, so I'm always look up to. I always had to make a good example and never show that I was scared. When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. I would always wish for more time in the day for myself, Although watching them grow up from when they were small and started school for the first time made up for that loss time. I live up to a quote, "Be the master of your future, not the slave of your problems." My senior year I had to stop being…

It was a ferociously gloomy day in the heart of Center City. The time of the observation was from 11:43 am to 12:43pm. Sandwiched between 15th street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard is the Philadelphia's Municipal Services Building and within the plaza of the building lies Board Game Park. Even in the rain, the park was festive. Upon arriving, it began to drizzle. The drizzle was light enough for me to sit by a statue that was composed of multiple bodies piled on top of one another. The noises heard ranged from rain dropping, to horns honking to people laughing or shouting. In the surrounding area of the Board Game Park is Love Park with its remarkable LOVE sculpture and fountain, which was spewing pink water in support of Breast Cancer Awareness…

In the early years of my childhood my mother had been only in the states for only couple of years. Consequently, when my mother was entering the United States she had lost one of her shins, and for a short time was disable until, she finally got help from a friend who contacted her doctor and donated a prosthetic leg. Even through trouble times my mother never let nothing get to her, so right away she got up and found her first job at a local restaurant that didn't require any social security or to speak the english language, yet in effect it didn't pay so well. Thereupon, our lives wasn't like an average Joe. Our home was a size of shoe box only four walls, one large bed, a sink, toilet, and a small gas stove all in one room, yet my mother never shed light how small our home was but how bless we are so we all stayed faithful. When it was time for school my mother couldn't always afford us to buy us new clothes, so we went shopping at the flea market or garage sales. As the school year ended families were heading to summer vacation and going out of town. Unfortunately since our financial standing we never had the chance to pleasure summer vacation. However, I didn't mind not having an average summer vacation, because my version of summer was staying back with my mother listening…

Starting out in a new environment is not always an easy thing for most people. I know typically I say that I have no problem making new friends but in reality I do. I gravitate more so to people that resemble myself due to the fact that I like to stay in my comfort zone. In doing so, I gain a mentality that I am only accepted by people that look, talk, or think like me instead of stepping outside of my comfort zone in order to experience new ideas and people. Ultimately saying that I have a fixed mindset when it comes to sense of belonging. With Bridge Scholars PLUS, I will be able to transform the fixed mindset that I have about belonging and connect it with my sense of belonging by stepping outside of my comfort zone in order to establish…

“I had a hard life growing up. You see, I was home schooled until until I was in eight grade and I never really had any friends. Except my cousins, that is. I mean, it was nice to stay home and spend time with my family, but only reading and playing video games got seriously boring after a while.
