Personal Narrative: Growing Up In The Dubuque Community
Sundays to hang out and visit. On my mother’s side I have two uncles, one step-aunt, four cousins and one step-cousin who all live in Chicago. We visit there twice in the summer time and spend Christmas and the day after there. Growing up, I was fairly close to my family but as we get older, we become more distant because of our lives changing and going into different directions along with moving away but I still keep in close touch with some of my relatives. Growing up in the Dubuque community, I went to Eisenhower Elementary, Roosevelt Middle School and Senior High School where I made a lot of close relationships with people. I was involved in many sports including soccer, basketball, bowling and volleyball where I gained a lot of friendships and became aware of others. I was a part of travel hockey team so it led me to knowing others outside of my normal settings, I met people who I didn’t go to school with or lived in my neighborhood. Coming into college, I met a lot of different people with different backgrounds and learning about their lifestyles. Overall, I know that where I live, I have a great opportunity to receive support systems whether it being from my family, neighbors, school and businesses around me due to great support I receive from my community. For the multicultural and gender considerations part of my life includes that I am white, female and a …show more content…
I am catholic but I don’t go to church every Sunday. I usually go when I visit my grandmother in Chicago just because she enjoys it and appreciates it when I go. Although I don’t go to church, I still have my beliefs and try to follow the practice to the extent in what I believe in. I am very open to see others beliefs and be accepting of them. All the things stated here can interact and impact the psychological framework by having the social knowledge of others along with the social frame work by my interactions I have within the

A brief background of my family will provide some meaning to our family structure. My parents were both born and raised in Muncie, Indiana at a time when the economy was not strong. My father was the fourth of five siblings in a household dominated by a physically abusive and alcoholic father. My mother lost both of her parents at a young age. I would learn later in life that my father spent most of his younger years at my mother's house to escape the chaos in his own home. My sister, brother and I were also born in Muncie but during a time when my parents were financially secure and neighborhood get togethers were the norm.…

In 1752 I was a seventeen year old destitute living in Scotland, Ireland. I had no real skill-trade or education, but with high ambitions to learn and become a collective dependant I would earn a stable lively-hood in one of the New World colonies. I suffered losses of loved who fell sick and died with only a few remaining that were as impoverished as myself. I feared there would be no prospect of a better life in Scotland and contracted myself as an indentured servant for passage to the New World colonies. Along with many others I boarded a New World merchant ship that specialized in the trade of textiles and clothing. In exchange for travel, food, and decent health, I was sold for profit to proprietors in the New World. The voyage to New…

What can happen in 30 seconds? A lot more than you would think. In DuQuoin IL, at Street Machine Nationals my family and friends decided to head to a dragstrip near the Holiday Inn we were staying at. My dad, mom, sister, and I rode in our 1993 Mustang, while my dad’s friends and my brother rode in their Tahoe. The night was going great, we could hear the crickets chirping and the frogs singing, it was peaceful.…

Growing up near Detroit, I have personally seen the poor conditions and standards of life that some people are living in. Although I have completed many hours of volunteer work in an effort to improve the bad conditions in the city, I feel as if I have not done enough. That is why after reading SCU’s vision, the aspect that attracted me most was the idea of building a more humane, just and sustainable world.…

Growing up in Casper, Wyoming is supposed to be wonderful, and for the most part, it is. As kids, we could always find something to do. Whether it be spending all day at one of the ponds that seemed to be around every corner, where we’d try so hard to catch small fish and funny looking bugs that we could bring home with us like trophies, or running around one of the parks, attempting to organize one of those sports games that never actually materialized, despite our promises a few days prior to actually get something together for once (“About”). When the sprawling skies turned to dusk, we’d rush to our houses, eat dinners as fast as we could, and meet up again, mason jars in hand, and try to catch those fireflies that floated around us until our mothers called us home again. Back then, it was almost like we were all exactly the same. We were always hanging out together, always doing the same things. Nobody realized it then, but it wouldn’t always be that way.…

Growing up in a very horrid environment can often be too influential to the point where it drives much of the youth, like myself, to ignore their dreams. However, I am an exception of this situation. I have primarily grown up in the urban area of Detroit, Michigan with many negative influences surrounding myself and others. Constant violence and crimes being committed was becoming normal for the east side of Detroit, in which I was living. It is clear to see that no child would be able to have a positive, effective future being near all of that commotion. Fortunately, my family and I were able to escape those particular troubles and move to a place where the community was more welcoming and beneficial. Aside from the general living conditions,…

What a difference a bridge can make! I grew up in a community that one would not call diverse. Currently, my hometown is 97% white. Driving across a 2.4-mile bridge over the Illinois River, the demographics change to 62% white, 26% black, and 4.6 Asian. Among my classmates, there were few ethnicities other than Caucasian. I did realize this difference as a child and I was extremely interested in other cultures, especially when we would go on vacation. Hearing other languages and seeing new traditions was very exciting to me. I would immediately befriend the foreign exchange students at my high school and would submerge myself in their culture as much as possible.…

As with my family, I have found there is great value in diversity among my friends. When I was a child, my family moved into a predominantly Russian neighborhood. I had the opportunity to build friendships, be part of the culture, and pick up on some of the language while we lived there. Since that time, I have been fascinated with other cultures. I have befriended…

Coming from an americanized Indian family, there is one custom that always stuck: no dating. It came to that point in high school where I finally got my first boyfriend and while I could willingly tell my mother and sibling, my dad does not know to this day. It became so hard for me to separate my 2 lives that I started to cut my family out of the picture because I felt as if with my boyfriend, Ben, I could be myself with no lying. Over the past few months, I have not purchased many things for myself or my apartment . Growing up I attended private Catholic schools and was surrounded by hundreds of loving and devoted Catholics. As a very young child, I remember walking to church with my family every Sunday morning and going to mass, or we went to church events and dinners with each other and our friends. However, as I grew older we moved from California to Alabama and my faith changed. We still went to Church but less frequently and it felt less like a family reunion where God greeted us all. My faith and opinion of the mass changed quickly after my eyes were opened to the cruelty and the evils of the world. Mass felt like a chore and didn't make me feel closer to God or Jesus. I kept questioning why all these terrible events were happening and I was confused…
