Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Moreno Valley High School
As a girl growing up in Moreno Valley, California, it was not easy overcoming the challenges I faced. Being raised in the “worst part” of town, meant I was destined to be nothing in life. Though these are what the statistics told me, I believed otherwise. I attended the “ghetto” schools of the school district in Moreno Valley, but nothing came close to Moreno Valley High School.
Before entering high school for my first year, I was told to be aware of gang members, drug dealers and so forth. I have had people ask me what school I attended and when I responded “Moreno Valley High School,” faces would be made about my response, and sometimes they would walk away. In this school, there were more support classes than honors and without enough books to be checked out to higher level classes, it was tough to complete

It was mostly teachers who inspired me to keep going, even though the situation at home kept getting tougher. Their words of wisdom and positive attitude towards me gave me motivation to aim for my goals. In particular, my English 2 teacher, Ms.Allbee, believed in me ever since she stepped into her new classroom. With the words of my senior AVID teacher and the compassion of Ms. Allbee, it made me realize I can be anything I wanted to be, despite of where I grew up and situations at home.
Through these distractions and kind words, I was destined to stay focused on what mattered the most, my education and future. Although my high school has some defects, it does not become an excuse for me to be unsuccessful. I took every opportunity available to me and through the guidance of teachers, I was able to perceiver and beat the odds of being another failure from Moreno Valley High School. In the next couple of months, making clarity of the next steps I am about to take into a university will not be easy, but the future will be worth the

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

My life as a child in California was a rough one and I remember it well despite being so young. My mother gave birth to me when she was 19 and my biological father died shortly after. I was raised primarily by my grandparents as my mother was incapable of caring for me. She turned her life around when she married but more problems arose further along in time. Quarrels between my parents became frequent, and they decided to move our family away from everything we had known to start anew elsewhere. When we left California, no one in our family was informed. My parents gathered everything of importance in our small home, and we left that night for Missouri never to return. My great grandmother lived in Missouri and our family moved in with her…

In this article Jerika Miller, age 17, is interviewed regarding her experience at William Smith High School, and how she believes that other high schools can be turned around like William Smith from failing high schools to successful ones. Having moved around and changed schools often, Jerika found William Smith to be a good school, and settled there for 3 years. She says that the reason she liked William Smith better that the other schools, was because it was more personal. The students are not just ID numbers, but individuals with names. Everyone knew everyone and wanted to know what was going on in each others’ lives. This school also put an emphasis on community.…

Can you imagine moving to a thoroughly unfamiliar place, going 100 miles away from all the settings in your memory and people that you have ever known? Throughout this challenge, the transition helped me to realize that change can evolve into being a helpful thing. This challenge brought up interesting and divergent circumstances, although there were many obstacles in the way. Now, I can act more comfortable with exploring other things and viewing all the perspectives of others.…

At the age of thirteen, I moved from Tanzania to start a new life with my parents, who were fortunate enough to gather the courage to leave their home country and move to Canada. Their main objective was to provide a better future for my sister and I. Growing up in Tanzania, I witnessed the injustices imposed upon the rural members of society. What troubled me the most was that I saw no progress. The gap between the rich and poor was so evident that it became a norm, a way of life. Although I realized that this was wrong, I never truly understood the complexity of these issues. When I moved to Canada, I saw the importance of practicing democratic values of equality and commitment to social justice, as well as the impact these features have…

Walking into high school freshman study hall, I felt a rush of nervousness and slight embarrassment when I asked for help from a tutor. Within a few minutes, I was assigned to a senior named Yingxu who spoke very little English. As we searched through my endless pile of worksheets and notes, Yingxu patiently waited to see the math problems I was having a tough time with. She helped me change the way I approached math problems. With her assistance, I learned more in one afternoon than an entire week of class. Yingxu was a math genius, but the most important lesson she really taught me was I had the power to solve any problem on my own.…

My middle school life was very slow but at the same time it went by very fast. There are several factors that contributed to this. For one, middle school was not the best and it wasn’t my favorite, although my experiences were very beneficial. I lived in the same house I do today, about 7 miles out of town and away from everyone. Which meant I didn’t really get out much and I didn’t talk to very any people. It also didn’t help that I was very shy and awkward; it really sucked. Most of the beginning of my middle school career I was viewed as a very weird and awkward kid and I didn’t have very many friends, but that all changed halfway through 7th grade when I decided to join the football team. I was very indecisive on this and I think if my…

So far, I have met many different people who have inspired me to keep moving forward. The professors that I have encountered have done nothing but encourage me to always try my best at everything. I appreciate them for pushing me out of my comfort zone in order to discover new qualities that I have. All of the assignments and assessments that I have taken, made me understand that I have to do what is necessary to prepare myself for what is coming in my academic life, which is seeking to obtain a BSN. It is comforting for me to know that my professors see potential in me. At all times I knew they expected the same amount of effort from me and nothing less. Moreover, my family is another thing that motivates me. My mother always reminds me that in order to get what I want, I have to work for it. Nothing comes without some type of sacrifice. My brother is someone I look up to because of all the accomplishments he has made. By observing how my brother changed his life around, it motivates me to reach for my ultimate goal. Just the thought of making a contribution to health care makes me thrilled to pursue a BSN…

“No please don’t make me go back!” I am yelling to my mom, as my salty tears penetrate my make-up and cause it to run down my face. “I hate it, that school is the worst!” “Honey, it is already half way through the school year, you can’t switch school this late in the year.” As my mom says the words I can hear the nonexistence care in her voice. Why does she want me to stay in this school? Doesn’t she realize that just four short months ago I was a “plain Jane” thirteen year old and now I’ve turned into a make-up palate with bones. The pressure of this “prep” school has turned me into this! I feel like just a skeleton of my former self, and I don’t quite know how it happened.…

When I first moved to Pinellas Park from Hillsborough County about seven years ago, I was upset. I was upset that we were leaving behind a perfectly good house with perfectly good friends to move closer to my extended family. I wondered why we were changing when change wasn’t needed? It was time for a new school, new house, and worst of all, it was time to make new friends. As several years past by, I realized they made one of the best decisions ever because if I hadn’t moved, I would’ve have never found the hidden gem called St. Petersburg Collegiate High School. I still remember my freshman year at Pinellas Park High School like it was yesterday. I did not take my classes seriously and thought school was not important, it was just a place…

I had a long confabulation with my parents( my motivators). They had a chequered career. I often draw succor and inspiration from them. They are undoubtedly great teachers. They are the best achievers as they have no axe to grind. They have(and had) the chutzpah to deal with the ordeals. Well, their financial stature may be at the nadir, but their moral stature is above all and everything.…
