Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Bath County
When I was younger, my aunt always told me “nothing's better than than fresh produce and growing up on it!” Growing up in Bath County was really different than Fort Defiance. There wasn’t any Walmarts, Food Lions, or Martin's local, only stores they had were little convenience stores. Most people had to grow their own vegetables… and even have their own farm animals. Every morning, I would always wake up before anybody to go outside and pick out what we needed for breakfast. I would get on a chair in the kitchen and put it to the counter tops and I would climb to get my brown basket to put my eggs and veggies in. The night before, my aunt would always pre made the coffee and when getting down from the counter tops and I would put the lid down to the coffee maker so it was ready when everyone woke up for breakfast. I would get my shoes on, my hat, gloves, and my red jacket. When you’re younger you really don't put two and two together and think about the roosters mind or what they don’t like. I went out to the …show more content…
She told me before I got down, to take the red jacket off and run. I look down and the rooster was still looking at me like i was going to be his supper. I threw my jacket over the fence, jumped down, and took off to the garden and I collected all the eggs and veggies we needed. I went back into the house and everyone was sitting on the couch already ready for church! The table was cleaned, everyone had ate, and took showers! I supposedly fell asleep on the chicken coop and woke up late and early service was already over. My aunt told me that everyone was all done and they went to church because they couldn’t find me. She thought I was at the neighbor's house riding my horse named Buddy. My aunt thanked me for keeping that chicken occupied while she collected the eggs! So my tip to anyone and everyone never wear a red jacket near a

When asked to write about a childhood experience most people think of the time they lost their first tooth when they were 6, or about the time they started school when they were 5, however, I’m going to write about summer. It wasn’t just any summer it was the summer that I went to the lake with my Dad and Papa. I was about 4 and couldn’t be any more excited about what was going to happen…

The day started off wonderfully. A few of my relatives and I were in Pickwick, Tennessee at my nanny’s lake house for summer vacation. We all woke up to a delicious family breakfast. My nanny woke my cousins and I up just like old times. She walked in the room, sat on the bed and said, “Rise and shine sleeping beauty.” Then of course my grandfather yelled through the house, “Wake your butts up breakfast is getting cold.” We had everything: sunny side eggs, smoked bacon, salty country ham, all kinds of juicy fruit, hot cakes, sugary waffles, and every flavor muffin you could possibly think of. It was so mouth-watering; my taste buds were on a rollercoaster.…

One day in a place far away from south Michigan, a kid named Evan was running in a long race. It was an estimated 26 miles. It was his first race that he has ever participated in. His nerves were racing and his relatives were too. This race was televised to the whole state of Michigan. He didn't practice and is coming into this with no running experience. The only thing that pushed him to do this was that his dad was a four time Olympic gold medalist in running.…

There I am sitting in my canoe, I close my eyes and just listen. I listen to the trees swaying in the breeze, the raindrops pitter-patting on my coat, the movement of the paddle as it dips into the water. I picture the beautiful autumn foliage that surrounds me as leaves gently fall from the tree onto the surface of the water and make a print on the water, even if it is only there for a second. As English writer William Hazlitt once said “We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our understandings and our hearts.” This is how I felt out on the river during our trip, I felt like I could really understand and appreciate the beauty and serene peace of being one with nature. I also felt like I could appreciate the care that it takes to keep…

Dad said midnight and unless Darrell could fly, I was headed for real trouble. Darrell and I chose to go to county fair and like every cliché couple, we had it set to go at sundown in order to get the perfect Instagram post. Luminous pinks, yellows, and blues sparkled a mile out as we caught our exit to enter the fair grounds. Vibrations under our toes grew heavier and heavier as we got closer to the entrance and with a $12 stamp on our right hand we ventured out on running feet. We spent our night soaring high and low with dangling feet, carrying weightless bags of fluffy, crystallized sugar as heavy gusts of wind hosed us leaving the aroma of fresh, crisp funnel cakes. Captivated by parading aisles of games had us lose complete track of time.…

In 2008 I moved to Bluffton to help start a new aluminum remelt facility called Alexin. I was one of three invited to make the move from western Kentucky by the presidents of Alexin because of my knowledge of the industry, my reputation as a hard worker, and my positive attitude. In the past nine years a lot has changed. Even though I know longer work in the aluminum industry, I still pride myself on my knowledge, reputation, and attitude. The job has changed, but what it takes to be successfully in any occupation has not.…

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

Growing up my mom has always encouraged my siblings and I to continue our education to as far as college. My mother never really got the chance to attend college because her family could not afford to put all their kids in school. She had seven siblings and an extra bill for school was not something her parents were able to afford. I consider myself really lucky to be alive in a time where there are so many opportunities to be able to afford college. If it were not for scholarships and financial aid, my mother’s story would be repeated once again. Through financial aid, the door for a college career is opened for me and I’m willing to enter it. My biggest motivator to push myself academically has been my…

Growing up near Detroit, I have personally seen the poor conditions and standards of life that some people are living in. Although I have completed many hours of volunteer work in an effort to improve the bad conditions in the city, I feel as if I have not done enough. That is why after reading SCU’s vision, the aspect that attracted me most was the idea of building a more humane, just and sustainable world.…

Throughout my life, I have had to make many choices. Some have been quite simple such as, whether to have a cookie or ice cream, or quite difficult such as, trying to decide where I wanted to go to college. All these choices, big or small, have made me who I am today. Certain choices have taught me lessons about what not to do in life, while other choices have made me grow stronger in my moral character. One such choice was whether or not to take part in my church’s mission trip called Impact Virginia. I had the choice between spending a week of my summer relaxing at home, or outside working on houses for people in need. I can honestly say at that time it was a difficult choice. I had never gone on a mission trip, so I had never known how…

In 1752 I was a seventeen year old destitute living in Scotland, Ireland. I had no real skill-trade or education, but with high ambitions to learn and become a collective dependant I would earn a stable lively-hood in one of the New World colonies. I suffered losses of loved who fell sick and died with only a few remaining that were as impoverished as myself. I feared there would be no prospect of a better life in Scotland and contracted myself as an indentured servant for passage to the New World colonies. Along with many others I boarded a New World merchant ship that specialized in the trade of textiles and clothing. In exchange for travel, food, and decent health, I was sold for profit to proprietors in the New World. The voyage to New…

A certain childhood place always takes me back whenever I flip through my family’s dusty photograph books, and that place is an apartment area in which my family used to live in Arlington, VA. Honestly, I do not understand why this place is the first place to attest in my mind as beautiful. I doubt anyone could consider an apartment beautiful. What is more, I know there were times I despised the place; particularly, since I was the baby in my family, everyone left the apartment for either school or work, and I felt lonely. Nevertheless, perhaps, Arlington, VA was beautiful because I made it so in my mind.…
