Personal Narrative Essay: The Pain
Hi, I am Nathaniel Nelson and I have broken my back twice. Two years ago I fractured my lower L5 (left side) while training new skills in gymnastics. The L5 is the bone that connects the front of my hip to the back of my hip. After wearing a brace and undergoing physical therapy for six months I was back into my normal routine. The following summer, I fractured the L5 again training new skills but this time on the right side. After going through about 6 more months of physical therapy I was "fixed". While my back will never completely heal as it was before the fractures, it does not disable me from completing my everyday life. In gymnastics I had to drop Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, and Vault due to risk of injury. Now I continue as a level

The most common type of treatment is nonsurgical, there are many varieties within this treatment options. Some doctors may say to not do any activity for 7 weeks to 3 months and be in a soft or hard shell brace. Other doctors believe that the brace is not worth the pain and that they should just stop for a little while and calm down with activity. Normally doctors recommend physical therapy so you can strengthen your back muscles so when you go back to activity you can be supported. Finally there is the option of acupuncture, this is a very controversial technique, I have done it a couple of times and it is very relaxing and helped with my pain a lot. What acupuncture is meant to do is prompt the body to produce chemicals that help to reduce pain. The other option is surgical and is rarely necessary. It is only recommended if you have been pulled from sports and braced for at least 3 months and after 6 months you continue to have pain. At that point the doctors recommend trying surgery if pain is bad and constant. What the doctors do during surgery is take out the part that is causing pain and fuse back the part that has fractured. The one that I would recommend through experience is acupuncture, I would recommend it is because you do not necessarily have to discontinue sports to help with the pain. The problem is the acupuncture does not heal or help heal your back what it does is help reduce pain so if you wanted it to heal your back fully so you can play a contact sport bracing and taking time out is the way to go. Physical therapy is a really good technique to help support your back, but the problem is it does not heal it like acupuncture but it does support you back so if you are in a situation where you need to do activity then your back will not be affected as much. Most people take a break from sports and do physical therapy so when they are done with the break there back is fully supported…

“We all stray from time to time….and when you do, OWN IT! If you deny it….you are giving up control again.” This can teach a lesson to people struggling with drugs and alcohol. If you deny that you have a problem, you will continue to let these things control your life, but if you own up to it, you can help yourself or get help from others. The quote, from the “I don’t know the Bible…” paragraph, “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant,”’ reflects what I believe in and what I have learned. Growing up I heard many people tell me, “God first, others second, and yourself last.” First of all, these two quotes are telling me to live a faithful life by putting God first. Also, to put others before me and serve them just like Jesus did.…

The misty September air froze against my skin; at least, it felt like it did. As we walked along the river, I debated the effectiveness of a faking an injury. Perhaps, then we would finally take a break. Although, It is far more likely we would continue to shuffle on, herded by orange traffic cones and dreary-eyed volunteers. Even now, years later, I still marvel at the fact the race starts at 8:00 AM. Whoever supplied the idea must not have recognized the pain it would cause my nine year-old self. Nevertheless, as we marched through downtown Portland, I felt a distinct similarity to the toy soldiers my brother had been so fond of. While we were disorganized and reckless, we walked quietly, with a common urgency. The comparison could also…

Two pounds and barely breathing. My mom went into labor three months before she was supposed to have me. I was born on February first, 2000 when it should have been May 2000. Immediately the doctors took me and connected me to a ventilator. This was a scary moment in time for my parents but me I was fighting for my life. Keeping me going was the gift of blood transfusions from my father and uncle. A spinal tap is a procedure to collect and look at the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This procedure was conducted on me. The doctors were trying to put together the pieces of what disease or infection it was that I was so aggressively fighting. I was able to survive the infections I had as a premature baby. All the battle scars on my…

Every human struggles everyone has hardship. When I was young I began to notice that maybe it is hard to understand what other people struggle with. The start of a mundane life began as usual a bus ride to school, but today something else happened a flash of yellow a soundless luxury sports car zoomed bass by a Lamborghini. As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. I began to wonder when will I get one with imaginary job I will live the high life. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…

A few weeks after the accident I noticed that I was not getting better, and was experiencing more pain. I decided to seek counsel from a lawyer who then referred me to a massage and chiropractic center, which I visited for treatment three times a week. I have a doctor’s note from Dr. Gary Hamm stating not to participate in any physical activity from 1/16/16 to 4/1/16. I also went to Fresno Imaging to have an MRI scan on my lower back and they found straightening of the spine, which is causing my pain. After being cleared by doctor Hamm I looked into starting physical therapy to strengthen my back, neck, and knee ligaments so I could return to duty fully healthy. I’m currently still awaiting a referral for physical therapy,…

I remember the first time I created art. I was seven years old and I was already in the midst of learning about myself. The pencil crayons felt like paint brushes as I let my inner artist run wild. I felt like Matisse himself even though I had no idea who that was at the time. I drew a rose and an off-coloured clownfish that looked more like Tiger. Although the things I drew had no significance, the idea of creating something captivated me ever since. I practiced baking to settle my need for creation and ended up falling in love with the hobby; baking is what fulfilled my need for creation and decoration. I still satisfy my need for art by occasionally visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario or drawing silly sketches the on scrap pieces of paper…

I felt this sense of fear, but I knew it was just nervousness. It caused my whole body to tremble. I creeped onto the field and pass by the fifty girls and all of the coaches. Just me walking by everyone gave me this ginormous knot in my stomach, it made me feel like I was going to pass out right on the field. I was breathing heavy, like I just ran a marathon. I was beyond nervous just to be the new girl on the field. I was scared of what the girls thought of me, and how the coaches thought I would play and adapt to the sport. I had never even picked up a lacrosse stick and the girls were passing, catching and shooting on goal: how does a new player get to there if they were two week late into the season? I was terrified I would never get to the level of the rest of the team.…

I believe resiliency is something a person does not realize he/she possesses until faced with adversity. The environment in which I was raised, gave me the opportunities and experiences needed to develop and adapt to the adversities I have faced in life. As a child, each time I was faced with adversity I was able to maintain allostasis and return to homeostatis. I honestly feel that now, more than ever, is a time I am demonstrating resiliency, as I am adapting to a new state of homeostasis as a young adult with Multiple Sclerosis.…

4 years ago I was at Volleyball we we're doing a drill called Ping-Pong. So it is kind of like real Ping-Pong besides the point that you are the paddle. So we we're playing it, having fun, and then. It happened. I went diving for the ball. Me and Lauren we're only ones on my team left. I was trying to save them. And then I fell. My foot and leg fell twisted at 100%. But that's not the worst part. Lauren did not even see that it happened so she kept playing. She by accident stepped on my ankle making the pain ache in my head. It felt like my ankle was being stabbed. When my friend Pene went to go get ice they all kept playing because I did not want them to quit playing because I was hurt. When Pene came back with the…
