Personal Narrative Essay: Severing Dragons
It was 1 am and I was busy playing Severing Dragons, a recently released MMORTS, when the phone rang. Of course, I really didn’t want to get up. I had just begun a new match and forfeiting would cost me 40 human souls and lower my ranking. I assumed it was just my parents and although I could just lie and say I was sleeping, they would never believe it. I had a consistent system of sleep at 2:30 am and an afternoon nap in their eyes. It wasn’t far from the truth, but annoying nonetheless.

I muted the game and grabbed a strap I was testing to secure the phone to the side of my head, so that I could talk and play.

However I put down the strap when I saw the caller id, it wasn’t my parents who had called, it was the police. “Hello,” I answered hesitantly.

Or should I repeat what I said?”

“No… I mean yes, yes I understood.”

“Alright,” he said, “Now, it is currently under investigation why the car was speeding. The car is believed to have malfunctioned, which will lessen your parents’ responsibility. However, your parents were under the influence of drugs, this has been proven without a doubt. As is federal mandate, all property of those involved in drug related murder is to be seized for criminal investigation. I regret to inform you that you are required to leave your house by midnight.”

“I’m being evicted.” I say in shock.

“Temporary, yes. If it is deemed that your parents were innocent, or the victim’s family decides it does not want to seize the house, you will be returned the house. The expected duration of the trial is 2 years, if all goes well for you will be returned the house then. Do not count on it. As for your things, the law entitles you to certain personal belongings which cannot be seized. Please grab a pen and copy this down.”

Through some built in survival mechanism perhaps. I scurried to find a pen and paper despite barely having any conscious acknowledgment of the events that were unfolding around

The trail continued around the east side of the lake entering a gathering of trees forming an insignificant forest along the lake’s shoreline. From our viewpoint, the trees concealing the trail eventually dispersed on the southeast side of the lake, and the trail blended into the landscape. Using our imagination, we envisioned the route against the rugged terrain sloping into the lake. No point in taking a vote now, we had trekked to the lake and the consensus was to proceed with a lap around the lake.…

Ladies, Gentlemen, Dragons. Now that I have your full attention, I am about to undertake an analysis into the very psyche of the human being and the fashion in which each and every one of us on some level desires to belong, whether this belonging is literal, metaphoric or fictional. William Shakespeare's play As You Like It investigates the fundamental need of the human being, and how the need to belong will often alter our priorities, things once important to us, family, friends, reputation, wealth and even our lives will often be risked or sacrificed in our search to belong. Furthermore The film How to Train Your Dragon by Dean DeBlois explores the way in which the necessity of belonging can cause difficult and life changing decisions that can enlighten and liberate an individual being forced to conform, if the individuals understanding of belonging differs from the societal norm in which they are placed…

Grendel, arrives to the porch of Herot, as his demon like appearance is exposed due to the glimmering overhead light shining upon him. He hurriedly grips the door handle and tears the door straight to the floor. The collapsing door and Grendel’s stomp into the grand entrance was as loud as thunder. Straight ahead of him, lay the warriors, sleeping like rocks. The walls of pure gold were so shiny, it was as if it was reflecting off the warriors skin. A sense of pure joy fills his mind, and his mouth forms a slight smirk, as he gazes over each and every one of them, knowing their lives will be vanished, and accomplishing more of his malicious schemes. He approaches a soldier, and begins to tear each of his limbs, and in the air permeated the sound of snapping bones and the shrieks of pain coming from the soldier. Grendel gulps the blood pouring out of the mans body, and finishes by gnawing on every square inch of his being with his sharp fangs. He is too amped up to stop here, as he continues to deteriorate every square inch of flesh and bones of these innocent warriors. A warrior shrieks as Grendel’s humongous, green, scale like feet move towards…

The owner of the house yelled at me and told me I better not move. Even though I had a concealed weapon in my back pack I didn’t reach for it. Frozen in fear I did just that and I didn’t move an inch until the police arrived. Just like I had seen on so many shows the police showed up and handcuffed me like a common criminal, read me my Mirada Rights, and literally threw me in the back seat of the police squad. So there I sat in the back of the squad car just a couple of days after my seventeenth birthday knowing what was going to happen next as I had been down this road before. My mind raced as we drove to the police station in what seemed to be the longest ride I had ever taken in my life even thought the police station was only 3 miles away from my home.…

It uses classic medieval themes to tell a story, but also uses sarcasm and comedy throughout the film to poke fun at these traditional elements of fantasy storytelling. The journey takes place in a short amount of time. So, this film is for audiences of both fantasy lovers and those who get exhausted from the crazy length of fantasy films.…
