Personal Narrative Essay On Prejudice And Racism

Most kids recall memories of taking test vividly. Not because it was fun but because they were probably all terrified of failing that it gets ingrained in their minds. Though this never really happened to me and to be honest I never really remembered most of the test I’ve taken. One test though I do remember well was the EXPLORER test my freshman year. Specifically I remember filling out the paper bubbling in my name, birthdate, address, etc. Then I came to the race section, at this point in my life I knew the drill just pick one race and move on, but as usual I can’t help but always hesitate. A classmate raised his hand and asked what if we have two races? I remember smiling to myself knowing that I wasn’t alone and that there were others who are also biracial. I also had an amazing teacher who went on a quick rant about racism and then told us to pick both races. That was the first time I bubbled in both my races.

Something in my life that I believe goes unnoticed is my biracial identity.
To me however it's been an important part of my life. Weather it be filling out forms or just living. Throughout elementary school I grew up in an all white town. The only diversity I had was when I visited my grandparents in Vietnam. In both places I’ve never really have felt like I fit in. Although I never had an issue with race throughout elementary school, middle school was when I started to see differences between me and other kids. At school people would identify me as asian and when I was younger I would always proudly tell people I was Vietnamese as I got older I found that pride to diminish.
