It was a day like any other. I woke up, ate breakfast, went to the gym for a couple of hours to lift and exercise, then off to the car factory for work. America’s gift to my generation is the freedom of choice, the freedom of speech, and independence. Many strong, brave men and women fought heroically for our freedom and rights, and they still fight to preserve the freedoms they attained. Asa Philip Randolph, a leader of the Civil Rights Movement, once said, “Freedom is never given; it is won,” and that is what our heroes did, they fought, consequently winning our freedoms.…

Growing up in America, I can honestly say that I rarely ever thought about what life was like for those living in other parts of the world. As naïve as it sounds now, I thought that my trivial problems were the center of the universe. I also thought that the luxuries of life that I was afforded were the same as those that were given to others. I clearly recognized there were other people living in other countries but, in a sense, I had believed that were all “living in the same boat”.…

I thought about my actions and figured that we both were to blame. After all, we both kept going at it with the music. The next day, I decided to create a welcome basket, as an apology for the night before. As I got to her house, I saw that she had a surprised expression and stopped whatever she was doing in her garden. I continued on the path to her house, with a tiny nervous smile on my face, as I didn’t know what to expect from her. As I began to approach her holding my gift basket in one hand, I raised it up towards her, and began to…

The rain clambered on our small tin roof as I rolled my stone across our floor. The smooth stone glided over out bumpy floor, past my mother, who rested in her rocking chair, placid, the stone continued through the small room until it, at last, reached my brother, Rory, his sharp nose deep in a book, only his shaggy hair peeking above it. Without looking up, his left hand reached down to the floor and gently pushed the stone back. As the stone traveled past her once more, my mother stood, and announced that our father had returned. We took our bags, small in size and holding nothing more then what scraps of food we could bring, maybe a change of ragged clothing, and the remnants of our money.…

When I was fifteen years old years old, my mom told me that we were going to go to America and asked me if I wanted to go or not. America was always an interesting and strange place to me. And I started to think about the life afterward. America is a country full of opportunity and it can provide a better living quality and better education. However, if I go to America, I would leave my family, friends, delicious food and culture behind and go to a strange place and become an outsider to learn things all over again. After long time of thinking, I decided to…

This connection that I have with my mother is a dime a dozen if you look at our entirely culture here in America. Less and less families these days actually cook or sit down to eat a meal together which has left many Americans searching for something they have lost. This lost feeling is being capitalized on by television networks by the vast amount of cooking and food related shows that are being broadcasted. Frank Bruni asks in “An Experts Theory of Food Television Appeal”, “For these young people, does the televised cooking have have the appeal of a missive from a lost utopia” (Bruni 111)? I believe he hit the proverbial nail right on the head with this line of questioning and he couldn't be more correct. Young adults who lead busy lives,…
