Personal Narrative Essay: Major League Baseball
Baseball has been part of my life since I was five years old. From ages eight through sixteen, I was a national level player who traveled to wide range of states to playcompetitively in tournaments. To this point, when I look at Major League baseball rosters, it isn’t out of the ordinary for me to be able to read names of players I have competed against. Needless to say, I knew baseball and was good at it. Maybe not good enough to play in the Major League, but I was good enough to play competitively against some of the League’s newest members.
Consequently, playing baseball at the national level required me to play in more games than are memorable. However, there was one game in my history that will never be forgotten by me. It was

I was up to bat. The crowd’s chanting of my name was full of hope, as I was one of the Dixie Heights Colonels best hitters. I stepped up to the plate knowing I would give it my best shot.
The other team had brought in their closing pitcher to wrap up the game. Having had hits on him in previous games, there was a little voice inside me reassuring me I could potentially turn the game around.
As I stood at the plate, adrenaline was rushing through my body causing my knees and arms to tremble. By the pitcher’s stature, I could tell he was confident he was about the throw the game-ending pitch. Confirming the catcher’s sign with a nod, the pitcher wound up and strongly released the ball that came barreling towards me. It was a fastball; a fastball I could all the way in to the head of my bat. I swung for the lights and heard that perfect contact; that sound that tells you “that ball is outta here!”
The rush of excitement pulsed through my veins as I rounded the bases and headed home. My whole team greeted me at the plate by pounding my helmet and slamming me on the back. Colonel fans were cheering and sitting back down in the

Pablo is up to bat. Everyone in the ballpark could see that he was quite nervous. It was his first game ever. He was bending his legs, elbows were up, and his eyes were looking at the pitcher. His pupils were as large as marbles. With the crowd at its feet, the pitcher wound his arm back and pitched the ball.…

The date was September 29th, and the wind was blowing furiously. It was 50 degrees outside, feeling like 30 degrees due to summer just ending. The score was tied with five seconds remaining in the game against Delavan-Darien. I fell back into my safety position, staring down the quarterback like a wolf approaching its prey. As the quarterback began his cadence, I felt something wet tickling my arms as if little monsters were crawling all over me. The quarterback yelled, “set hut!”, and the receivers began running their routes. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied the slot receiver running a drag route across the middle of the field. As he crossed the inside linebackers, the quarterback threw the ball. Right when the receiver was about to catch the ball, I ran up and make a perfectly formed tackle above the receiver's waist at his ribs, forcing the ball to fall loose. The pass was incomplete.…

I could hear the small crunch of cleats behind me swiftly darting across the dirt. Everything went into slow motion like all life changing things do. I rotated my body and dove at the back corner of the bag. I slowly glided across the dirt and the corner of my eye caught the pitcher releasing the ball. I almost hit the bag when ‘Thump’ I felt something smash my right wrist. I could literally fell my arm swelling already. I slowly managed to get up shaking…

As the baseball diamond started to fade in and out of my blurry vision, I realized something was wrong when I was still sitting on the bench. I was on varsity baseball, ( that’s what I thought I was gonna spend the rest of my life doing) my grade point average was rising, and I was surrounded by positive people all around me who gave off a positive vibe. Of course all good things must to an end right? Well my good times came to end quickly.…

Through all these thoughts I heard my coach tell me to go warm up. I jogged down to the bullpen and began to toss with the catcher. After I had warmed up I began to pitch. I threw my first pitch right to the catcher's glove and knew that all the offseason work I had put in would pay off and I would dominate the opposing team. After I had finished warming up I went and sat on the bench to look at the opposing team’s pitcher and talk to my teammates. Ten minutes later and it was time to take the field for the first time. We jogged on to the field and began to warm up and prepare for the game. I threw seven more pitches and knew I was ready for the game. The first batter walked up to the plate and dug in, I got my sign from the catcher and began my wind up. I released the ball and it began flying towards the plate. The batter swung and fouled it away. I got a new ball and then got another sign from the catcher. I started my wind up again and released the ball again this time the batter swung and connected. I saw the ball soaring through the sky towards the outfield fence, it continued towards the fence and…

From the time I was a young kid, baseball has always been an important part of my life. Like a lot of kids I started playing tee-ball and continued to work my way through the different levels. I was never the most skilled or athletic kid on the team, in fact I was sometimes the worst, but I was always the on having the most fun. My lack of skill would sometimes cause me to have low confidence but that would…

All I hear is parents screaming, teammates awaiting the time when we jog out onto the brick chip field, and our coach telling us where we are going to play and how he wants us to work our butts off trying to win. I smell the popcorn, nachos, pretzels, and mostly what I smell is sweat mixed with a dingy dirt. I’m thinking in my mind, “We all have to give it our all to win the game.” So I put on my dirt crusted, sweat smelling glove on and hustle out to the red brick chipped field.…

A cloudy, cold, and wet March day was one to remember for me. It was game day. There is no better feeling than waking up the morning of a game. I always felt like waking up for school on game days was always so much easier than non-game days. My high school baseball season was in full swing; I attended St. Dominic High School and we were ranked number one on Long Island during the preseason and had a lot of hype to live up to. But it was all hype. We were not playing to our full potential and we were in game three of a crucial series against Holy Trinity; we won game one and lost game two. This third game was do-or-die for our playoff run. Our offense was ice cold and I was competing for a starting spot- I was hitting well and knew my chance would eventually come. I pulled up to school, looked at my phone early that morning, and saw a text from my coach that read “You’re starting today,” then proceeded to explain to me the importance of this game, and…

I stepped on the white-chalked batter's box and stared into the pitcher's eyes, it felt like an eternity. The pitcher had become set and started his delivery, I got an outside corner, belt high pitch, I watched the ball hit my bat and soar, it seemed like an eternity watching that ball sail over the fence. I had done it; I was never happier with myself in a moment like this. I would go on to carry my team to a League championship game; but lost by two runs. I had finally gotten the season I had…

After winning the remainder of our season games, and earning the title of conference champions, it was now time for the regional tournament. As a team, we were now much more confident in our abilities with ourselves and each other. We had a taste of victory and were hungry for more. It was the regional championship game and only the winner would advance to the state tournament. On that chilly October day, I took my place at the plate and as fate would have it, I bombed another one over the right field fence. That was just the confidence our team needed to win that game and become the regional champs.…

I was good. In fact I was an all-star. This was my first honor, award, or recognition that I earned. I looked ridiculous wearing teal pinstriped pants with my red all-star shirt. I was more nervous for this game than my first game. This was the best of the best. Everyone was good. I honestly do not remember much about this game. Other than the fact that I got hit in the butt with a pitch, it was a dull game. Maybe I should explain, I was watching this pitch come in from the left-handed pitcher. It had late break going further out of the strike zone, I turned my back, trying to avoid it and pop, right off the old keister. It’s funny to me when I look back at the names on the other shirt I was given, the one with everyone’s name from my team. I remember looking back on it and noticing that for some guys, this was it. They never played again and I could never figure out why. Why do people give up things that they have talent…

I can still remember the day I got my first game winning hit. It was a sunny June afternoon and the score was tied. There was one out and a runner on second base. The parents were all cheering loudly. My dad and brother were in the outfield watching and cheering like the usually did. I still remember the smell of freshly cooked hot dogs form the concession stand, I felt like I was at a pro stadium. As I stepped up to the plate my heart was pounding fast. When I looked up the pitcher was staring at me like we were having a staring contest. He than threw his first pitch and I leaned in and smacked the ball to right field. It felt like a year has gone by while I was running to first. When I finally got there…
