Personal Narrative Essay: Gravel As A Tennis Player
Gravel is among a motorcyclist’s greatest enemies. With only two wheels to stay up, traction is the greatest asset. Once, I ventured onto an unknown, hilly road, under anticipating a sharp turn ahead. When I got over the hill I saw I was headed towards gravel on the side of the road, with no way to stop the inevitable. The next thing I knew I was bleeding onto the road with ripped jeans; I couldn’t process the fall until I returned home from the emergency room. Because of my wounds, I was unable to walk for over a week. My family, friends, and even my friends’ families told me to give up riding, that it’s not worth the risk. This could not be the answer; fighting the fear based advice, I was riding again three weeks later.
Had I encountered this situation three years ago, I would’ve run from the potential of pain and given up. My experiences have made me even more resilient over the last three years.

In one case, I was fighting to win the league tournament for my school and losing 1 to 5; my opponent only needed four points to win. Around me I saw my team, coach, and the other team standing against the fence watching me play. I began to repeat a mantra in my head, “I’m going to win.” By sheer determination, I won the match. At the end of the tennis season, my coach said I was most resilient player he’s seen, and awarded me as the Most Valuable Player. This wasn’t an isolated incident - I was often playing an opponent much more experienced than myself, found myself falling behind, and bounced back in the

“When we first started it was for a better cardio workout and to stay healthy. I had no idea on how to play racquet ball but Tom knew. Starting out we played by the rules. But as the weeks went by so did the rules. We would kick, push trip etcetera.” Kevin explained. Success is something that is a reward, it is never just handed to you. This is what I learned last summer 5,043 miles away from home. In Tipperary, Ireland my 23 teammates showed our coaches, fans, and competitors that you don’t have to be Irish to beat them in their own game. For the first time in history, San Francisco sent a girls camogie team over to Europe for Feile (a gaelic tournament), not expecting that we would go very far, we went for the craic. We were most definitely doubted but proved all of the hopeless wrong. I think that my story relates to Odysseus’ journey in the Odyssey by Homer Odysseus and I both started off with denial of our calling and eventually accepted the call. Throughout my adventure I encountered some obstacles just like Odysseus. Through jet lag,…

It's that feeling when you get to that ball that you never felt was possible or when you beat the girl that you thought you could never beat. It's those moments that make the long terrible hours worth it. It makes the hot sun, or freezing winter a little bit more bearable. There's a certain feeling that you get when you walk onto a court and you know that you feel good and on top of the world, you only get it a couple times in your life but when you feel that way, there is nothing or no one that can make you feel better. There's only one person that can make you feel this way and that same person is the judge to how often you feel that way too. Everyday, I get on that court and I have to, I need to, try my hardest…

Softball isn’t just a sport, it’s a passion. Last year, in a softball game, I tripped and cause us to get all three outs. My team, as well as my coach, was very upset. As a consequence, I sat the next two innings out. Sitting alone and thinking about how my mistake could cost us the game, I felt as though I needed to prove to my team that I didn’t mean to and that I could help get the game back. I finally convinced my coach to let me back in the game. An inning had gone by I still hadn’t proven myself. I was getting nervous. Bottom of the ninth, my chance came. Playing shortstop, a ground ball was headed straight for me. I caught it, and threw it to first. First then through it to third, and I tagged the runner coming from second base. A triple play! We were three points ahead and had won the game. I had such a feeling of self-accomplishment and pride. I had proven to the team that I was a…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

For example, I went on a 12-4 run when we first started playing the game. During this time I was super excited because I hadn’t played the game in a very long time and I was keeping up with my friend who is extremely good at the game. I was gaining self-confidence in my game and was constantly thinking about the next basketball move that I was going to make. I was down by about 4 points at the beginning of the second half, so I was still feeling pretty good about my game. From there, however, he went on a huge run that effectively took me out of the game. It was at this time that my self-confidence began to go down and I began to think of other things that are going on in my life at the moment. I wasn’t nearly as focused as I was in the beginning of the game, even though I still had a little hope and was still trying to catch back up. It was this lack of focus, however, that caused me to fall farther and farther behind in points until the game finally ended. I felt completely normal after the game had ended, except for a feeling of relief that the game was over and that I couldn’t get any further behind in…

According to a Safe Kids Worldwide study based on hospital emergency room reports from 2012; there are an estimated 1.35 million students in the United States that seriously injure themselves each year. For two out of my three years of high school, I have been piece of this grim statistic. My sophomore year I fractured the left side of my fifth lumbar vertebra located in my lower back. This was caused by running too hard. Then the next year, the right side of the fifth lumbar vertebra was fractured too. Both of these injuries brought an abrupt halt to my cross country season. Fracturing my lower back was an extremely difficult experience that has taught me how to deal with adversity.…

As a freshman, with previous experience playing volleyball in middle school and at the beach, this essence of competition was very attractive to me and so I tried out and made the junior varsity team. Last year, during my club season, after sitting on the bench for the first part of the year, my coach recognized my improvement and hard work and gave me the starting role for the second half of the season. The little voice in my head telling me "you'll never make it!" or "you're not good enough!" inspired (and continues to inspire) me to persistently improve every aspect of my playing during practice and such an attention to detail, combined with my inner motivation to improve, lead to my…
