Personal Narrative Essay: Golf Ballout
I looked down at the video in my hands, it showed me throwing a football into a hoop for Super Bowl 50.

“I’ve got the Panthers!” I declared as the ball left my hands into the Hurricane like winds that blew my messy, way too long, dark brown hair into a huge mess. The ball didn’t come down for a while.

Waiting.

Waiting.

Waiting.

Finally the ball plops down into the hoop like a golf ball into a hole.

“I’ve got the Broncos!” my friend Ashton screamed to the camera through the wind. He throws the ball with all of his might, a perfect swish into the hoop.

“Yes I made it!” he screamed

“Let's play that back on the TV!” I yelled back.

We always have these random battles where we say random things to each other like earwax in my bathtub or Hillary Clinton doing backflips off of the Empire State Building.

For the shot at the waterpark we were coming down the slide and throwing a basketball into a hoop from about 85 feet away. We both tried it for an hour but didn’t succeed so we had to come up with a strategy to make it.

“We will each take 1 shot until someone makes it” I concluded. On my first try I chucked the basketball as far as I could, over the gray railing and the green side of the slide and watched the orange basketball float up into the air like a hot air balloon. I didn’t even have to look at it I just slid down the bumpy dark slide and celebrated. I knew that ball was going nowhere but into the soft, cushioning embrace of the net.
After we posted that incredible shot we decided to do a Super Bowl shot again for Super Bowl 53. This game was the Chargers against the Packers and we were so excited because it was similar to the shot we did 3 years ago. This time it took us 15 minutes instead of 5

That doesn’t go as plan and he gets sacked in the backfield. GC fans are terrified because we just lost a few yards, but it isn’t over just yet. The team huddles up and the quarterback calls another play. Its looks like we’re going to run the same play that gave us a gain of fifteen. The center hikes the ball and just like before, he gives it to the running back. Everyone in the stands trying to look past all the players on the field to see where the ball is going. Suddenly, we see a black jersey come out of a pile of other jersey. As fast as lighting Greene County is running down the field aiming for a touchdown. The announcer once again “he’s at the thirty, the twenty, the ten, touchdown!” That seals the deal with only a minute left until halftime. Washington Wilkes fans sits with disgust all over their faces. Our rivalry that thought were going to blow us out, now has to go into half-time with a tied game. The fans happy as ever, can now go into the third quarter with all hopes that we can win the game. The band now playing the Greene County Tigers theme song, “Eye of the Tiger”, in good…

It’s fourth and nineteen, Tampa Bay’s special teams unit comes on, trying to pin Carolina deep in their own territory. “Hike!” It’s a fake! Tampa Bay’s punter drops back. He finds a double covered, third string running back streaking down the field. He throws the ball as hard as he can. The ball travels a total of three yards before an oncoming Julius Peppers snags it out of the air. “Interception! He’s at the thirty. The twenty. The ten. He could go all the way! Touchdown!” This was the play that capped off my brothers 56-0 beat-down of me in our Blackfoot cousins Madden tournament. Taking a moment to comprehend what had just happened, I stared at the screen in disbelief. The entire ensuing minute was madness. “You cheated!”, “That would…

The day had finally come. No it wasn't Christmas or the New Year, Kwanza or even Easter. It was the the most glorious day of all days, the Superbowl. Now for anyone who has never heard of the Superbowl and lives in America, that person has either lived in a cave for their whole life or…well that I think would be safe to say that's probably the only case because everyone knows what the Superbowl is. Anyway, this Superbowl Sunday started off just a little bit different than most Superbowl's I've had off from work and for any of this day to make any sense for anyone that wasn't there, I'm going to have to start by including some background information on the previous events that led up to this day.…

In the Fall of 2010, I watched my first televised football game from beginning to end. I sat down beside my older brother, Nick, and watched him as he analyzed every play of a Green Bay Packers game. He would scream at the tv when a bad play happened but would rejoice when a good one followed. I wanted to be just like him and know everything about football. I watched every game that season and annoyingly asked Nick every question that came to mind throughout the year. On February 6th, 2011 the Green Bay Packers won their 4th Superbowl title and I knew football like the back of my hand. After the game my brother said to me, “There’s no way you could ever not be a Packers fan now. You’re their good luck charm.” as I nodded, smiling ear to ear.…

First bend legs about 90 degrees. Next, bend the dominant arm which had the ball in it, like the 2 pointer. Then, put the non-dominant arm on the side of the ball. Push up with legs, jump, and at the same time push your arm with the ball, do not forget to move the hand down to push the ball. The three pointer is not the last shot to learn. The last shot the player would need to learn is a foul shot. This shot only happens when there is a shooting foul. It is one point. First, bend the legs 90 degrees like the first two shots, but the player must be behind the line. Bend the dominant arm 90 degrees with ball in it. Push up with legs, but the player can not cross the foul line, which is the straight line in front of the basket,so the player can do a small jump but, he can not cross the line. Then put non-dominant hand on the side of the ball. Next push dominant hand up and forward, and of course catapult it forward. After completing these steps the player can complete a foul shot.…

It should be easy, right? One task: put the ball through the hoop. It’s just you on the line. You’re stationary. The hoop is stationary. One game-winning point with every shot. If it were easy, free throw shot percentages would have increased over the last 50 years, but they haven’t! We need to make a permanent shift in our training.…

They ran out onto the field, similar in size and strength of men in their twenties, and began a simple, but loud chant of “Red Dogs” accompanied by the crowd. Beginning to have some doubt, we sent our captains out to the middle of the field for the coin toss. Even though our captains were some of the tallest biggest people on our team, they were miniature compared to the size of their four captains who towered over our captains as an adult towers over a child. This moment is when we were certain the game was a lost cause and first place was out of reach. Doubt and defeat could already be seen in the coach’s eyes; nevertheless, we lined up for the first play. Alex said “hut”, and we ran it straight up the middle—touchdown. We stood there in aw not believing what just happened and thought surely it was a fluke. Our defense stopped them, and we scored again. The final score was 35-7, and the Falcons won it. After shaking the hand of the sad giants, we received the trophy and first place ribbons; and our doubts and disbeliefs were nowhere in sight.…
