Personal Narrative: Embracing College
Embracing College For many High School graduates, applying to college is a daunting adventure where new opportunities, relationships, and knowledge are ready to be explored. As a new freshman, I was not ready to succumb to the possibility of becoming a poltroon in this new and exciting world. I was ready to thrust myself into college with the adherence and prowess that most students lacked when they finished high school. I wanted to join college, not only to lead a lucrative life, but to also prove to everybody who impugned upon me that I am able to follow my dreams. Not only do I have a lot to prove to society, but I also have a lot to prove to myself. I have been told my whole life that because I am diminutive in size and a woman, that

The application process of college was rather easygoing for the Baby Boom generation, born after World War II. The baby boomers who sought to attend a four-year college usually planned to go to a school within their state; many considered a college across the country to be far away. Few students felt the need to apply to more than two or three colleges, and many applied to just one. College choices were most often based on locality, programs, cost, and difficulty of admission, with a parental alma mater sometimes thrown in for good measure. For the most part, the whole process was fairly simple. The result was usually predictable if a student researched college information before deciding where to apply. There were shocks, some pleasant and some upsetting, but the topic of college admissions did not reach a fix of national mania. However, media reports a different story for American senior high school students. Recently many colleges have been breaking records for the number of rejections of applications; this helps competition for admission skyrocket. The best solutions to avoid this competition are to teach high school students creative writing for the application essay, reconsider the importance of the SAT/ACT scores, and avoid applying to ivy-league schools as an incoming freshman.…

I come from middle-class parents, of which neither attended a post-secondary institution. My sister and I are the first in our lineage to attend and complete a college degree. I grew up in Cali, Colombia where medical care and special treatment for health issues as well as higher education was not very accessible due to my family financial resources. Underrepresented individuals, as myself, feel there is not much support for positive community development, nor encouragement to individuals to seek and achieve opportunities that they felt were out of their…

My time at the community college was used to focus on building a strong academic foundation, specifically tutoring international students English every week as they tried to maneuver through their lives in the United States. I remember during one particular session, a Chinese exchange student told me that when she first arrived in Seattle, she was in a state of euphoria. However, her inability to communicate fluently with her peers hindered her from adapting to the customs in America. Consequently, it impeded her from making her own place in society. Another individual, who emigrated from Eritrea, confessed she was still unfamiliar with having additional resources at her fingertips. She grew up in an area where advanced technological tools,…

Joining the Honors college did not cross my mind for a long time in my research of Appalachian. I did not see myself capable of thriving within a possibly contentious community of highly intelligent people. However, as the deadlines began to tick down and the pressures of school were put on blast, I began to realize that the honors college was my strongest option. Since I was very little, competition and a healthy amount of academic pressure have brought out the best in me. Rather than wilting under the intensity, I rise up ready to face the challenges thrown my way. The honors college will stimulate my growth towards intellectual, personal, and professional achievement utilizing both friendly competition and social proliferation.…

Whenever I hear the phrase "college isn't for everyone" my mind cringes at the thought of all the lazy people who walk amongst this earth. There are many things people deal with on an everyday basis that "aren't for everyone". Cancer isn't for everyone, losing a loved one isn't for everyone, and being put in situations, you don't ask to be put in certainly aren't for everyone. However, as human beings, we have to continue living our lives to the best of our ability. There are no excuses in the real world. There are no excuses to not have a decent education in order to make a living in our country. Some may not like the system but that's the way it works. If you have an education, more times than not you'll make enough money to get by. If you don't, you will be left with an underpaying job which usually involves hard work, and you will be the one petitioning for $15 an hour minimum wage. Education is important and sometimes a wake-up call is needed in order for people to realize this. I was one of…

I was placed on Academic Probation after my freshmen spring semester, I went to College with a new set of freedom I never had before and did not know how to adjust to my new freedom well. I come from a very large blended family and my parents worked very hard to provide for all of us, my mom had worked multiple jobs and was trying to continue her education so she would leave for work very early and would come home very late. That left the cooking, cleaning and tending to my younger brother to me all while I was a high school student, working 2 jobs and playing softball. With all that being said when I got to college I did not focus on school because for the first time in 4 years all I had to worry about was me and that was a strange relief…

Reflecting back onto my senior year; my father had recently gotten a job promotion, my sister was attending Duke University, and I established relationships with my animals. The topic I choose for my personal essay to send to college was not hard to figure out. My first horse was brought to me at 4 months old, where she strode away from human contact. After she gained trust, she grew to become wild and engaged in attention. Visitors would stop by her pasture to watch her prance and buck through the hills of the forest. Her personality reflected my own. Moving to North Carolina helped me create an identity for myself, while traveling to Cuba before starting college helped me gain confidence with…

Learning was difficult when I was younger, which allowed me to appreciate learning in college. As a child, I did not like the process of learning, having to be wrong or right and having to retain the information. I would be embarrassed about having the wrong answer since for everyone else, it seemed as if the material just clicked for them. In turn, I would lie to my teachers when they asked if I understood it as I did not want them to slow down just for me. Then, I’d go home to learn it with the assistance of my family. Slowly, I learned how to learn in a classroom setting and how to ask for help. My mother would always tell me to ask questions when I did not understand. I still hesitate when I ask questions in class.…

Aside from the inspiring role models I gratefully have and the never-ending encouragement my family provides me with, my personal motivation for proceeding onto college are countless. Some of the larger reasons why I choose to go to college are because I see that college offers a variety of opportunities that is not offered anywhere else. For instance, college offers courses that will further one’s experience in a certain field, preparing one for the real world before one can successfully thrive in the fast-paced and volatile world. Not only will I obtain and expose myself to “the tough stuff,” which includes countless demanding college courses, I am also building a stronger profile of myself with the challenging classes I will partake for professionals who will review my resume when I apply for a job or go to a job interview (Graff 225). Going to college will allow me to be an independent individual because it will be essential for me learn how to make a living on my own. I will no longer have my parents or siblings to help and look out for me anymore. I am required to take control of my life and basically learn how to survive on my own. My college education will be highly beneficial because obtaining a college degree and/or a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) will open more doors for me considering that the fact that some employers “do not even interview applicants who do not hold a B.A.” (Graff 233). Therefore, I will have an advantage over those who do not have a B.A. Many may argue that there have been successful stories that did not involve a college education, however the chances of that are very low. Furthermore, my desire to be influenced by a new and diverse group of people leads me to go to college. I wish to be influenced by more and intelligent people who hold perceptions contrary to mine, so I can…

After leaving my high school life behind me, I looked for a way to escape my dreary surroundings. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and even if I had, I had no plan to achieve them. I spent my last year trying to enjoy my time and desiring that other people invited me to be in their company that I had no plan for when that last school bell rang. When it finally rang out, I was again lost. The only difference was that I no longer had classes. Going to Rock Valley rectified that. Like other kids going to a community college, I had no direction in my classes and was without an idea about what a degree would get me.…

When my expulsion appeal failed, I felt like my life was over. Having grown up in a strict Christian family that migrated to The United States from Ukraine, a heavy emphasis was always placed on education. My mom, a single mother, would always tell me how lucky I am to be in The United States and how I can do anything I could possibly want in this country as long as I work hard for it. I took that half-heartedly. While I was always proud of my grades and the work I always put into school, I was a kid that behaved badly and disrespected everyone. However, everything went to a new level in 6th grade when I got expelled from school.…
