Personal Narrative-Day Deer Season
It’s November, so that means its deer season. Every year deer season starts on the second weekend of November and last for ten days. I get really excited around August because during this time my family and I start exploring the woods looking for signs of deer. We look for signs like scrapes on trees, footprints, and tall grass that looks like it has been laid on and flattened. We set salt blocks out around our tree stands and set our cameras out hoping to catch a picture of a big buck. After we finish all the preparing we wait until the first week of November. During the first week of November we go back to our stands, check the salt blocks, set new blocks out, and grab our cameras to take back home. Once we get home we look at the pictures

Unlike some mammals, the white-tailed deer do not hibernate during the winter, instead they survive by shedding their summer coat and growing a heavier winter one. This winter coat consists of dense underfur and is made up of hollow hair shafts, and these adaptions provide the deer with insulation. White-tailed deer also have special skin muscles that allow them to manipulate the hair shafts on their back and provide more insulation. Additionally, in order to prepare for the winter months, deer eat more, adding extra layers of fat to their bodies. Deer can store about 25% their body weight as fat. Because the storage of energy is so important during the wintertime, deer have periods of "rest" or metabolic slowness. In this period not only does…

When hunters are interested, they can go online and find more information on the management plan. When the conservationist want hunters to know about something, they will inform them. Remember when hunting don’t wait for the big buck, you have to take does sometimes. The population is being taken care of so stay calm and watch out for deer when you are driving down the…

In the fall every year my aunt, uncle, their older kids (from Edmonton) and two cousins (who are at a school at BYU in Utah) all drove to my house for Thanksgiving. My brother, two sisters and i get very enthusiastic and we help every way that can, to give our parents a hand to clean up. We have 2.5 acres of land and a small forest in our yard (which we call the bush [because of its size]). The bush is where my brother and i use our imaginations to build fort and make our outdoor ‘‘man cave’’. Behind our bush is the trans-Canada trail (which we had to sell some our property for it), but it is a great place for lemonade stands for my family to have fun. After the trail is a dirt road that is our shortcut to Blackfalds…

Carlos put his 2 fingers in the shoulder of the dear where I shot it and marked my face with the blood for good luck. Then I got a picture with it. After we loaded the deer into back of the Kubota. Then We drove to the car, and lugged it in the back of the truck and weighed it and it was 140 pounds! Hanging of the truck. So we said we are not skinning this deer we are going to take this to the pro’s. We took it to Wild Boy’s Processor Shop. We had the hard choice of how we wanted to eat the meat. A sheet of paper was handed to us full of options. We decided to have all of it divided into only snack sticks and patties. The first, being the best way they offer the meat in my opinion. The patty meat was mixed with onions which made awesome deer burgers. After we dropped off our kill, Carlos, the hunt master, took us back to our truck to put the guns and the chairs away for safekeeping. We said our good-byes and headed back home. We arrived late or you could say really early because it was 1:00 in the morning, not to mention it was a school night for my dad and myself. We quickly unloaded the truck. With quick showers to get off the blood, I put on my pj’s and turned off the light. I laid here briefly thinking that this was the day I shot my first…

On December 7,2013 I killed my first deer. On that day it was cold and the air was crisp, earlier that morning soft fluffy snow had fallen. I was sitting in the stand where you could see the fallen leaves and the white snow mixture. The trees were restless when the cold freezing wind would blow, you could hear and see tree limbs falling from having to much snow, the birds and squirrels were out playing in the snow, but I wasn't out to hunt the squirrels and birds I was out there to kill my first deer.…

I woke up on a fall morning at about five in the morning. My dad woke me up and said, “We’re going hunting. Be ready by five twenty.” I rolled out of bed not wanting to go and got my hunting clothes on. I was quickly eating cereal as my dad constantly would nag me to eat faster. Finally, we were ready to go and drove up into the mountains. This took about a half hour.…

The tradition of hunting runs deep in my veins, and I can picture the cold and windy November mornings all too clear. The mountain during its fall transition is vibrant, with its rich and radiant reds and yellows. The feeling of pursuing any animal is irreplaceable. More often than not, coming back empty handed is common, but the memories made in the treestand are valuable, and something as a hunter you don’t forget. The anticipation for those November mornings is what I prepare for all year. After spending countless hours preparing stands, monitoring cameras to get the latest on the deer movement, and practicing my bow, all is just a part of the preparation. All of this preparation is for a couple of hours spent twenty feet above ground, hoping for a successful hunt. The hunt allows me to rewind from the past school week, but serves as one of the best places to just sit and think. The overwhelming tranquility of the woods during early morning in November is something only a hunter would know.…

The topic of hunting is prevalent throughout most of the United States; however, a plethora of obsessors of this traditional American pastime thoroughly enjoy taking it to a further extent. Not only is hunting an exhilarating experience but so is the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness. During winter times since I was 12 years old, my father would take me out on long drives in the middle of winter to hunting sites just outside of Edmonton. What made the drive not seem so long was the scenic route we would always take. Every once in a while I would see little white rabbits hopping around and leaving miniature footprints all in the snow next to the road. Further down the road we would pass a fairly big hill that had two pine trees at the top of it. I always wondered how long they had been there considering the fact that they were over thirty feet high. Finally we would get to the hunting ground and make are way down to a little patch of brush where we would crouch and wait for the deer to pass by. The feeling of the cold snow crunching under my boots, the frost covered branches of the bush we were nestled under, and all the little footprints that surrounded us gave me a feeling of unity with nature. After hiding in our spots for a long while, usually until my feet and toes were completely frozen it seemed, my father would whisper “Here comes one right now”. A few moments later I’d hear a loud bang and we’d be back on the road with our trophy and bragging rights. We have carried on this tradition every…

The greatest day in a boy’s life is when he turns fourteen. Fourteen meant everything because at fourteen a fellow can hunt the most exciting animal that ever lived in Michigan, the deer. Yes, the year of the deer I shall never forget. When my dad poked his head into my bedroom at 5:30 A. M. in the morning on November 15, 1973, I knew the day had finally arrived for my first deer hunt.…

It’s close to 7 a.m. when I see gray shapes slip out of the tree line. The thrill that shoots up my spine wipes the November cold from my limbs. There’s something primal about the first sight of game. Alert and careful, the column of whitetail deer emerges for breakfast. A peek through the binoculars reveals they’re all does exactly what I’m looking for. I wait for them to calm down and start browsing on the edge between the forest and the field. Even from 100 yards away, the deer sense that something isn’t quite right. Every few seconds the lead doe’s head bolts upward with her eyes and ears locked on my location; her nostrils test the air but the wind is in my favor. I dare not blink. When her head eases down in search of another acorn I make my move, raising my gun slowly until I’m in a solid, seated position. I pull the stock tight to my shoulder and cheek, rest my triceps on my knees and dig my heels into the earth to anchor the whole package into a steady platform. I take a breath and exhale most of it as the crosshairs settle into a small orbit on her shoulder—it’s never as steady as it is in the movies. I lose sight of her from the recoil of my gun after I take my shot. The sound of the bullet’s impact echoes across the thick morning air and lets me know that bullet found its mark.…
