Personal Narrative: Dan Gable
A Man I Admire
I admire an olympic gold medalist wrestler. He has been someone I’ve admired my whole life, he is known as the Michael Jordan of wrestling. His name is Dan Gable. He was born on October 25, 1948 , Waterloo, IA. He had one sister who was raped and murdered when she was in high school, and Dan was only 16. This is what drove him to win and compete in wrestling. I admire Dan Gable because he is hardworking, mentally tough, and a wrestler. First, not only is Dan Gable an olympic gold medalist, but he is also a very hardworking man. Both in his coaching career and as an athlete, he would have half the battle won by being mentally prepared. Dan Gable said, “ A lot of my intensity in wrestling was due to my mental preparation before the match. I got myself into a different world.” I try to be mentally tough like Dan Gable and be unbreakable. I get extremely focused before my matches and do whatever it takes to get to this stage of preparation. Third, the part that draws me closest to Dan Gable is that he has wrestled. He was literally obsessed with the sport. He once said, “ I went to college. I had a double major in biology and physical education, but my major was wrestling.” Dan Gable did get married in life, but I believe his first love in life will always be wrestling. He didn’t just compete because he felt people wanted him to or because he felt obligated. He competed because he loved the sport of wrestling. After Dan Gable won the olympics he didn’t just settle for a high pay coaching job and let his athletes slack off. He recruited the most hardworking and mentally tough wrestlers he could find. Iowa wrestling is now known for having the toughest wrestlers because of Dan Gable.These are just a couple of reasons I look up to one of the greatest wrestlers in the world.
