Personal Narrative: Covenant Classical School
It’s funny how we try to fool ourselves into thinking we have any control of our lives. We live with the idea that we have full authority over our choices and our days. In early 1989, My husband, Charles, and I were living in Charleston SC and had just been blessed with our first baby girl. Bringing her home had put my Master’s Degree on hold, and my husband felt that this would be a perfect time for us to move, but I quickly nixed his plan.

I was born in Charleston — it was my home, I wasn’t going to leave. God, however, had other plans for us! In 1989 Hurricane Hugo swept through Charleston, causing massive amounts of destruction and devastation — they say it was a turning point for Charleston. It was certainly a turning point for our family, as we soon moved to Alabama to live with family.

We were strong, and trusted in God’s plan, so I settled into our new home and began to look for a position. My husband enrolled in Samford University’s Sports Medicine program, and I was blessed to begin working with one of the Board Member’s for Covenant Classical Schools (CCS). I witnessed as CCS grew and matured, and I personally experienced the ‘CCS Way’ when my third daughter attended the Trace Crossings Campus. It was there that I first heard about the 4 C’s.

The 4 C’s are actually the representation of CCS’s four passions: Christ, Children, Character and Classical education designed to equip children with foundational character attributes as well as a foundation of academic excellence. As parents, we want to see our children challenged academically but even more importantly, we want them to grow in Christian character. We want them to have biblical references shape their worldview, so that, throughout their lives, they can apply these references in order to do right by the

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

“Slow down, future leaders of America at play,” a sign engrained in my memory as a result of the numerous volunteer trips I took to Mountain Mission School. Mountain Mission School (MMS) is a Christian boarding school and home to many children, who come from devastating backgrounds and poverty. Receiving no government funding, Mountain Mission School located in Grundy, Virginia operates solely on private donations and generous charities from churches all over America. In addition to a school, MMS played a key role in my life. Not only was MMS my home but also my church starting from second grade up until I graduated high school.…

To begin with, I was over my grandma's house on a warm and cozy summer night. When out of the blue my mom asks Me if I would rather go to school online or regular high school she stated that if I chose to go to school online I'll be going to a school named Penn foster. Because it would let me work at my own pace, it didn't cost too much, plus they would help me if I didn't quite understand one of my courses. My first thought was wow why the heck not! and blurted out yep I wanna go to school…

As this is one of my favorite classes, I can remember several lessons that were entertaining this past year. One of the first materials that come to mind is when we did the presentations about whatever we wanted. A recent topic, I enjoyed was reading The Crucible as a class. I also recall finding Edgar Allen Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" amusing but slightly disturbing. The element I enjoy most about PowerePoints is researching the information. Although presenting them is something I am not inclined to doing, being allowed to select the subject of the PowerPoint was especially pleasing to me. Reading The Crucible as a class was surprisingly highly entertaining to me. I considered the various people’s perspectives, reading the lines…

Throughout my academia, I have been a member of several clubs and organizations, but have yet to attend a free leadership and service conference. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars needs a free in-person event that hosts a multitude of workshops from becoming a better member, to becoming a better leader and more. This event should be a two-day weekend long including update meetings on how the organization is accomplishing its endeavors and goals in terms of membership count, influence in the community, and upcoming events. During a workshop, we could bring in experts to discuss how to become a better writer to increase our chances of earning NSCS scholarships and other scholarships. In another workshop, our members and club leaders…

Freshman Composition has done so much for me academically. In previous years I have had to do little to no writing and even when we did there were no rules or writing process we had to follow. This class has built a great basis for me, towards my academic future. I do realize that I am far away from being even an average writer, but I enjoy and accept that challenge to myself on becoming a competent writer. Parts of my writing, that still need to work are my introductions and sentence fluency. While I believe that my strong suits are, that once I get past my obstacles of writing that I have the potential to write something that will make a difference, other than that all my skills are still very raw. I’ve learned many things during EN101, the…

Even generations ago, my family members realized how difficult it was to fit in time to see distant family members. That’s why since my great grandmother was around, we’ve spent one day during the holiday season participating in what we call The Progressive. As the tradition goes, each family is required to prepare one part of the traditional five course meal, the assignment of which rotates between the families each year. Each family prepares their part of the meal and hosts it at their home, allowing the entire family to visit everyone’s home and “progress” through one giant five course meal throughout the course of the day. It has, without a doubt, provided some of my family’s favorite stories throughout the years while allowing us to reflect on the year’s past with each other. Although it has been around since my grandparents were children, it has changed drastically since it’s inception those many years ago.…

Teachers often positively impact a student’s passion. I was fortunate enough to have such a teacher in my life. Ms. Hendricks, my AP Literature teacher, over the course of two years has unveiled my true passion for writing and literature. By ensuring students grasp literal concepts of the obtuse meaning of the material, she has been able demonstrate the beauty and power of words throughout every aspect of daily life. Ms. Hendricks classes instilled in me, a strong belief that writing and literature are the two most important concepts of communication. As a result, I have decided to major in communications, a field with endless career opportunities.…

Growing up in New York City has been one of my biggest blessing. I’ve met with so many different personalities and cultures that I feel more well rounded by default. One thing that I’ve always found lacking in the city is the presence of small stable communities. My elementary school had 800 kids and my high school has over 5000 kids. Barnard offers the best of both worlds for meーa small college community situated in the best city in the world.…

My Lincoln Intermediate experience is very hard to remember. I can never tell the two years apart. I had the same three teachers for both years. I don’t know how that works but it happened. I had the same math teacher my mom had when she was in 6th grade. Mrs. Rezab she was my favorite teacher in Lincoln, but I'm not so sure she liked me. She would always say “Where's your homework?” Or “Why isn't it done?” I never ever did my homework, and to be honest I'm still learning to do it.…

I headed to my first class which just so happened to be my favorite subject, English. The hallways were very wide but when filled with students I felt like I had to shove my way through just to get to my locker. The lockers were a mixture between Gray and purple. The school colors were supposed to be purple and silver but there was no way that these lockers could be considered. I took a look at the little piece of paper that the lady in the office had given me and tried out the combination on my locker. It took me about five minutes to open it and after struggling for that long I was a little irritated so when it did open, it flew open and slammed into the locker next to mine. I held my breath and hoped that nobody had noticed. I took a long deep breath and slowly opened my eyes again. Luckily I was still standing alone and nobody around was looking at me. I put my extra books and notebooks into the locker and and closed it as quietly as I could.…
