Personal Narrative: Coach Feeney
I took a deep breath, as I walked upon the court. It was the finals. For five years I dreamed to reach this stage, however, on January 22, 2014, the day had finally arrived. Preparation for this game was extensive, Coach Feeney relentlessly pushed me to my maximum ability. Laps, suicides, push-ups, scrimmages, lay-up drills--it seemed as if he made us do every possible conditioning activity. However despite all this, he had a soft side to him. Whenever I ran my fastest, or played my hardest, coach would give me some raisins, they tasted good surprisingly.

On the day before the game, he called us to his house for a pre game pep talk, and to celebrate our accomplishment. Coach said that we will be playing a two-three defence, and one-two-two offence. All of us were very excited. Coach Feeney unexpectedly, bought the team pizza, ice cream, and donuts, as I was about to devour the food, he rejected me, just as I do to forwards on the court, and prevented me from eating any of it due to the fact that it was not healthy. However he assured us, as he said “You will get the goods when you win and compete.” The desire to eat all the food motivated me to play my hardest, it was a good move on his part.

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

It was finally November 17th and the first morning of two-a-day basketball practice. I had been looking forward to the season and was fixed on finding a spot in the starting lineup. Despite my determination, I was out of shape after having been home sick for the past month. During one of the drills I became very light-headed and fell and hit my head on the hard-wood court. Immediately, I jumped up and tried to continue practicing. I finished the practice and made my way to first hour with a dizzying and distracting brain-spike. I fought through the rest of the day and immediately went to sleep when I arrived at home that afternoon. That next morning I woke up to the thunderous sound of my alarm, but as soon as I opened my eyes I saw the…

My teammates were telling me to stop being a ball hog and stop showing off. I told them to back off and let me do me. The coach had pulled me out of the game told me that I was doing too much and I was not gaining anything by doing that. I was out the majority of the second half of the game and Brightwood was not pulling ahead; Truesdell was ahead by two points.I was devastated I wanted to win so bad seeing a score like really hurts me and shows that i am determined and competitive I came back in the game within fifteen minutes into the game with a different plan. Back then the only thing I really wanted to do was run around, dribble a ball, and hang out with friends that did the same. Practices were all very basic, layups and dribbling drills, also there was some shooting and lots of running which is the same way i coach my 1st grade team today. When our season began, we went into the games just for fun. however, we started getting better and going into games with a NEVER LOSE attitude. And went through the season with 2 loses the first game and sadly the last witch was the championship. That night was the first night i ever cried over a game and honestly it was the last. Because crying never got me better practice…

It seemed that all my years of hard work had all come down to this moment. All those days that I would spend hours at the gym, making sure I had made all my shots and perfected every dribble move, not even bothering to take Sunday off because if I wanted to go somewhere with basketball, I would have to eat, sleep and breathe basketball. I refreshed the inbox of my email, and there it was, the decision that would make or break my basketball career. I had tried out for one of the most elite club basketball teams in Wisconsin, Oshkosh Flight 14’s team. I think I clicked on that email about five-hundred times in anticipation while it loaded. I skimmed the first sentence and my jaw dropped on my desk. The words were tattooed to my eyelids, I could…
