Personal Narrative: Celebrating Holidays In My Cultural Identity
Being a black African American from South Louisiana is how the general population sees me and i’m ok with that because it’s true. There is always more to an average person that it seems to come off as. Having the skin color I have plays a HUGE role in my cultural identity and it defines some of my lifestyle. I have family members who stay all over the U.S and even Germany, so when everyone links up for a family gathering each person brings a dish and it’s very interesting trying new foods from all around the world. The way we celebrate holidays, eat and cook, and also my religion is examples of things that help me define my culture. Celebrating holidays in my family are really interesting because it’s women against men when we all get together. Being a black person and celebrating holidays probably has more meaning of love to it than any other race due to our history as black people. Even though the women and men in my family compete to see who’s the best cook or who makes the best drinks it's always love involved. My family is very unique and has a strong bond mostly because there isn’t many of us left. I don’t come from a huge family which is kind of why celebrating holidays plays a huge role. …show more content…
My sister, brother, and mother had a baptism ceremony and i’m the only one who hasn’t yet. As a child, I went to church every Sunday and attended Sunday school as well, but now i don’t attend church that much. My mother had us move around a lot in the last 4 years, so finding a stable church is a challenge, but that still doesn’t mean we don’t take pride in our religion. We are sometimes judged by our lifestyle and how we don’t live by the bible we have strong church members who are friends of the family and they really frown down upon us. The Blackburn family doesn’t live by the bible word for word, but we do cherish our religious

As a child I believed that someone’s physical appearance made them “different” from the next person, but that is not true. I could list plenty of things that describe my physical aspects as an African-American female. My skin is brown , my hair is kinky, and my lips are full. Unfortunately, those characteristics does not technically make me “different” from any other African-American female. Diversity can refer to someone's economic or geographical background, religion, and even their sexual orientation. In this manner, being African-American did not make me who I am, but being who I am made me African-American. People see me as an African-American female, but I am more than that. I am African-American. I am a female. I am homosexual.…

Well I am half white and half black. I personally do not consider or identify myself as being either black or white. I guess I just let everyone else decide that for me because it doesn’t matter to me at all. Because of my skin color people consider me to be black, however my friends joke and say that I am the whitest black man they have ever met, and that comes from both my white and black friends. I would consider myself to be a typical American on the simple fact that America is the melting pot of the world and I would be considered prime example of that with everything that I am mixed with.…

I am Indian-American. However, accepting this truth was not as easy when I was younger. During the ages of 13-14, the age in which any child is finding himself or herself, realizing their identity, and coming to a conclusion regarding who they are, it was difficult for me to find a common ground between the two clashing cultures I grew up in. American culture screams individualism, independency, selfishness to benefit oneself, and equality between gender and races, whereas Indian culture asserts collectivism, dependency, strong family ideals, and separation of men and women. These stark differences made it anything but easy for a confused, pre-pubescent child, like myself at the time, to find their identity.…

I belong to a community that praises hard work and intellect, always striving to earn a better life. This community is the first generation immigrant community. Since I am the oldest sibling, I am designated in the unique role in my family as a cultural advisor to American life, an overachieving role model to my younger brother, and the face of my parents’ source of pride. I view my situation not as an impediment, but as a catalyst for my business and public service aspirations in the future. Education has always been stressed even when I was in elementary school. I would spend all evening working on supplementary reading problems and critical thinking math problems, assuming that this was what my American peers did when they got home. I have…

Throughout my seventeen years, I have met and dealt with various groups of people with diverse ethnic backgrounds from school or through my volunteer activities. However, nothing prepared me for my summer job at the new local Walmart store. The first day of my first paying job was also the grand opening day for Walmart at the Dulles Landing store. I have met countless employees and customers with so many different backgrounds and cultures, who communicate with each other in so many different languages. The whole atmosphere at the Walmart store feels like I am in the middle of the busy World Market. There are countless demanding and exasperated customers that I deal with each day at the customer service counter. Through this experience,…

I come from a culturally diverse family. My dad’s side of the family is filled with traditional southern charm with summer days spent with my grandma picking fresh strawberries and learning to grow flowers in her backyard. As well as, huge family reunions with an abundance of delicious foods such as: fried chicken and sweet potato pies. My mom’s side couldn’t be more different, they are loud reggae playing, always dancing Caribbean people from Belize. They fill you with laughter and interesting foods such as: peas and rice and ox tails. With such proud people around me it is hard to not eventually become proud of who I am and not be afraid of sharing my colorful family with the world.…

Prior to taking this course, I thought I knew what it meant to be versatile in various cultures. However, in reality, I really did not know as much as I thought I did. Last semester, I took part of the study abroad program to Costa Rica. I embarked on a cultural journey that forever changed my life. I was able to experience and embrace in a new and different culture than my own. I lived in Costa Rica for four months. While living there, I had opportunity to also travel to two other countries in Central America, Nicaragua and Panama. After living in another country for four months, I believed that I was culturally diverse; I believed that I knew what it was like to being cultural, little did I know that there was so much more than to living…
