During the summer before entering high school my sister encouraged me to apply for an internship online provided by a program called Hire LA Youth. To my surprise I got the internship which was a exciting moment because I realized it would be my first real job experience . I had the choice to work at various locations but I chose the Boys & Girls Club because it would be a way to give back to my community. I knew this would be challenging since kids can be very difficult to work with and it's a great responsibility

I went to St. Michael School from Kindergarten through Eighth grade, so when it came time to leave for high school, I was not excited for the change. St. Michael was especially small in regards to student population. We had just under three hundred students split between all nine grades. That left roughly twenty to thirty kids per class. I was extremely used too this small environment and not exactly looking forward to the terrors of high school towering over me nor the thought of being lost in the sea of students. Over the years I was extremely imbedded in my academics. I had straight A’s for my entire time at St. Michael. I received the academic achievement award at Eighth grade promotion for having the highest GPA in my class. Despite this, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to live up…

Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…

When I started Unity High School I thought that we were going to get a lot of work from my classes, and that work was going to be extremely hard. I also thought that I wasn't going to have any free time to do anything because of that, but it turned out to be wrong because the teachers give us a good amount of work but its not really hard. I thought that making friends in Unity would be hard in a sort of way but it was quit easy because everyone else was trying to make friends too. When I first got to Unity I also thought that there was going to be a few school clubs, but there is a good amount of clubs that students can join if they want to join some type of club. I think as a person I have grown more since first coming to Unity because I…

For the past two years, on the 1st Monday of the month I have participated in Site Council meetings at my high school along with other Associated Study Body (ASB) members, our principal, school administrators, parents, and teachers. Frequently it was brought up that minorities were not as involved in our school as majority groups. ASB has always been dominated by white students and as a Latina, I found it very intimidating when I joined.…

Throughout my high school experience, the one memory I remember the most that helped me the most would have to be the time I interned at a local non-profit, Lettuce Live Well. I decided that I needed to encounter more challenges in my life; as if my life wasn’t challenging enough. I decided to work with a non-profit because I knew I would get all the experience I can get while getting to work head on with the local community; this was what made it all worth it. The one place that I found I can get the most experience while still connecting with the local community was an organization call Lettuce Live Well.…

One day in seventh grade something wondrous occurred to me. At the end of the school day I was packing my belongings that I would need when I materialized at my house. Though while I was preoccupied, I espied something in my mailbox with my eyes suddenly. In matter of that fact, I decided to walk over to it. I slipped my hand through it and then grasped a letter. In result, my body very slowly went to my seat and I opened it. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I was accepted into the National Junior Honor Society. I was so thrilled that I was going ditzy with my adrenaline rising, at least in a fine way. I started cavorting up and down. Sailing is one of the only things that I have done since I was little. Ballet, I did that for a while, and then skipped that. My obsession with fashion designing, however, definitely grew out of it. Dora the Explorer, well, it would be weird if I still liked that. We still sail, and I had always heard adrenalin rushing stories of adventure on sailing trips or racing. I never thought I would live one of those, especially without my parents and even weirder, on a girl scout camping trip. Anyone who has been a part of Girl Scouts, knows that there is a safety rule for EVERYTHING. There are a safety rules for the safety rules, which is why my parents let me be a part of the trip with seven girls and a captain I and my parents had never met before.…

When I was younger I would have been described as shy and reserved. I was like an un-blossomed flower. My life has since changed drastically. Many opportunities came across me such as taking a cruise with family and business friends, being nominated to be a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) 7170 member of 2015 at SUNY Oneonta, and being chosen to go to a National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) for Medicine in Boston 2015 at Babson College.…

I applied to become a Mock Interview Mentor at the Career Center and was offered the position. With this position, I was able to help students prepare for their interviews and to eventually, land their dream jobs. I received students' cover letters and resumes and tailored specific questions for them, making the interview experience as real as possible. I taught students how to market themselves since interviews are an opportunity to sell yourself to the employer. After our interviews, I noticed that students felt much more confident and appreciated this opportunity offered by the Career Center. Previously, I had another internship with the National Council on Disability at the Republic of Panama in the Public Relations department. I assisted the department with press releases and created a marketing plan, which goal was to include people with disabilities in society. High school is a new atmosphere to everyone. There’s more people, new teachers. It doesn’t start to hit you that you’re almost done with high school until the first week of senior year. It feels like just yesterday you were coming to open house freshman year.
