Personal Narrative: Boy Scouts
I am heavily involved in Boy Scouts and have always been told that I should strive for my best. Since then, I have done everything I could to lead and learn. In my troop we were running low on active membership, on average we only had about 10 boys coming to weekly meetings and as the senior youth member I had to find some way get our numbers up. I reached out and took the initiative to try and increase our numbers. From building new members up to having a one-on-one relationship with each youth and parent, our numbers started to grow. My term as the senior official was a year and in that time we moved to a different location and had some problems with our sponsors; nevertheless, by the end of my term the troop had nearly 30 youth coming every …show more content…
I thought that I could “retire from scouts”. Little did I know that I was just getting started as I was inducted into the Boy Scouts national honors society, also known as the Order of the Arrow (OA). In the year that followed, I had another trip of ups, downs, twists, and turns. I got involved in the OA and took a chapter chief leadership position. This meant I was in charge of making sure the 20 troops that I served functioned well and that their OA members were helping their troops. I attended many trainings such as a Regional seminar in New Jersey and a National seminar at Indiana University called #NEXT. I had a grand time and by the end of that term I was ready for more; I was ready to serve the OA as best I could. I ran for Lodge office (one step above the chapters) and got what is equivalent to vice president. I will be serving this leadership role over my senior year of high …show more content…
In my school, I am a vital member of our television program and I am the “go to guy” for unknown problems or difficult tasks. My school also has a Technology Students Association (TSA) chapter and in my junior year of high school I was the vice president. In my senior year I am running for president. I am also a member of our National Honors Society chapter and will help lead and guide new member into a new year of service. In addition to these, I was selected by the school as the student of the month. From there, the nearby Rotary International club sponsored me to go to a leadership training camp at Messiah College over the summer. It was there that I learned a lot about leadership and that it is more than just leading people but it is serving them. A servant leader is well accepted and very efficient as those they lead respect and often like to be around

Growing up, I always loved building with boxes of assorted Legos and K’NEX, and as I often spent most of my childhood playing around in the basement where my father stored all the scrap wood, tools, and screws, I inevitably began to adventure into the more creative world of designing and assembling without limitation. From my first experience building a stool for Cub Scouts to my most recent internship in the Biomedical Engineering department at the University of Delaware, I have constantly surrounded myself with creation, always exploring my inquisitive nature. My love for design especially draws me to Brown with its open curriculum and encouragement of a broad education in engineering while also specializing in my specific interest. Through…

It was then I had a sudden, shocking realization. Everyone who came, all thirty-five people, were here because of me and my vision to help the community. This project was born because of my idea of helping restore the church property and, hopefully, improve the relationship between the troop and the church. But, this was all mine and I took the helm and guided it through the murky, rough seas to get it to this point. I learned I could be a leader and both adults and my peers respected me, saw my dedication and determination, and followed my lead. This realization brought a smile to my tired, dirty face, and gave me a boost of energy to help me finish off the…

Having been involved in the scouting program for well over a decade and with most of which being during the most formative times of my life, Scouting has certainly contributed to my desire to become a Marine Corps Officer. From the onset of the scouting program I have been instilled with many values, starting every scout function with the scout law, “A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” While there are many valuable principles thought by both the scouts and the Marine Corps the (65)three main values that both organizations stress of honor, courage, and commitment are among the ones I hold most high. The familiar sense of brotherhood within the Marine Corps is also something that I feel a very close and strong connection with is brotherhood is and was a fundamental part of my close-nit high school community. As an Eagle Scout I was taught to lead by example and as a marine I would strive to do the same, leading from the front and always living up to the standards of honor, courage, and commitment set forth by the Navy and Marine Corps long time-honored history.(63)(128)…

Scouting was developed at the turn of the 20th century by British officer Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell. After discovering that his men did not know basic first aid or the elementary means of survival in the outdoors, he was prompted to teach them by writing a handbook called Aids to Scouting . Chicago publisher William D. Boyle experienced the working of the book when he was helped by a young man who claimed to be a scout, after refusing to take a tip for helping Boyle. Inspired by this act, Boyle met with Powell and with the same ideals in mind founded the Boy Scouts of America. However, in modern times, the values that the Boy Scout was founded upon has been shaken by the legalization of homosexual members to join the organization.…

Early in life, my family instilled in me exceptional integrity and values, and emphasized the importance of respect and hard work. Passed to me through a strict upbringing, these values and personal qualities have given me a steadfast foundation upon which to further develop myself as both a man and a leader. In preparation for an appointment, I have pushed myself greatly on all fronts. Academically, I have consistently pursued the most challenging opportunities available to me, and have excelled in doing so, all while maintaining the responsibilities of year-round sports, a job, youth group, and clubs. As team captain of two sports, president of the Beta Club, and a youth leader in my church, my time is often spread thin between the duties of each, but I feel that I have flourished in these positions, and feel a natural calling for leadership. Physically, I have trained hard to meet and exceed the standards set forth by the academies, and have participated in some of the toughest and most mentally demanding sports available at my school. I have pushed myself not only to prepare for a service academy, but for my subsequent life in the service; as I hope to have demonstrated, I am extremely passionate about serving and protecting my nation, and will pursue this pathway regardless of my acceptance into a service academy. Although I still have much to learn, I am confident that I am qualified to meet and maintain the high standards for which the service academies are…

I started cub scouts when I was 7 years old. My dad took me to a meeting and I loved the fun games we played and interesting topics we learned. When I graduated from cub scouts and joined Boy Scouts ,I really enjoyed the camping, hiking and outdoor experiences. Earning First Class was easy. I learned a lot about camping, first aid, orienteering, canoeing and cooking. When I achieved Star, I started to learn how to complete merit badges, some of which took me a lot longer then I thought. Climbing to Life Scout is where I started to slow down and focus on my leadership skills. In my leadership training, I had the privilege of going to NYLT and honing my leadership techniques. During this time, I was accepted into…

As Apaunic Chief in the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America, I have had a lot of experience in coordinating events, guiding, and training others. I have prepared meetings, and executed them assiduously and efficaciously. Sailing is one of the only things that I have done since I was little. Ballet, I did that for a while, and then skipped that. My obsession with fashion designing, however, definitely grew out of it. Dora the Explorer, well, it would be weird if I still liked that. We still sail, and I had always heard adrenalin rushing stories of adventure on sailing trips or racing. I never thought I would live one of those, especially without my parents and even weirder, on a girl scout camping trip. Anyone who has been a part of Girl Scouts, knows that there is a safety rule for EVERYTHING. There are a safety rules for the safety rules, which is why my parents let me be a part of the trip with seven girls and a captain I and my parents had never met before.…

The most challenging part of being a leader is when your followers do not respect your authority. There are always ups and downs in being a leader. Some days, there are more downs than ups, but as a leader I have to learn from what happened and try to make it better for next time. As a leader of a Boy Scout Patrol can be stressful when dealing with young scouts, around 12-14, that usually do not like to respect their leaders. At the age around 12 and 13, they will listen to what you are saying, but will not do that action that you asked of them. This is challenging for me, and many other Patrol leaders or any other type of leader, because as a leader you want to be heard and when you are not being given that respect it makes you…
