Personal Narrative: Better Off Dead By Sleeping With Sirens
When we first started talking about one hour scene creations in class, I was very interested in the idea. I started to come up with ideas, but unfortunately many of them had to deal with love. In class, you mentioned how you wanted us to move past stories of love and do something else, so my ideas did not really work. I started to think of new ideas, and I could not think of anything. I had wanted to do something involving music and create a piece based off of it. A majority of songs are about love though, so I had to look through many songs to try to find one that was not. Eventually, I got frustrated and started to listen to music that I enjoyed just for fun. Better Off Dead by Sleeping With Sirens was one of those songs. While listening …show more content…
I had all my props with, and I knew what I wanted to do. Unfortunately some complications occurred. First of all, my piece was basically all music, but I did not get the speaker working until about 20 minutes into my time in the X. That is when I started panicking. I could not do much without the music, and I was having to improvise. Also, I had wanted room 20 (I think) because it had the mirrors I needed, but another group was using it. I tried coping with using the X, but that was not working. When my time was up in the X, I had not got anything done that I had wanted to. My group and I ended up working the rest of the time in a dressing room. I decided to use the dressing room for my piece because I needed the mirrors. However, this brought up another problem because we were not able to use the blocks while practicing in the room. The first time they performed the piece for the class was their first time ever using the blocks for the full song and in that room. My group was very patient with me and the complications and I am very proud of them for just going with what we had. In the end, I think it turned out fine, but I wish I would have had more time and less complications while creating this

Growing up, I noticed a lot of discussion about financial problems between my parents. It’s not that we were becoming poor, it was because of our growing family needing more supplies. The piece was a devised piece of drama called ‘Fire’, set in 2011 in the outskirts of London. It was about a schizophrenic teenage girl whose conscience persuaded her to undertake risky activities. The stimulus for our play was a song called ‘I hate Mondays’ from which we fashioned a piece of physical theatre on. We also used gun crime statistics as well as the life of 50 cent to help develop and influence our drama. I played the part of Olivia’s conscience and also her teacher. For the character of the conscience I wore simple black clothing, identical to Olivia’s to symbolize being her. When playing the conscience I altered my movement to delicate yet sneaky. The makeup was very simple to keep to the naturalism of the play. I also played the part of the teacher, wearing a tie to symbolize the character change. The genre of the piece was a psychological drama and the style was non-naturalistic with elements of naturalism. We used several techniques to improve our piece such as flashbacks, narration and physical theatre to keep the audience interested. It was set in the 21st century, the year 2011. I acted alongside 4 other girls in an intimate drama studio setting with raked seating with an end on stage. Throughout the play we used simple a lighting design that included spotlights, to add emphasis on monologues; slow fades to indicate the end of a scene and a blackout for a sudden end. We also used red gels for a surreal atmosphere in the dream scene. In addition, songs such as ‘Hide and Seek’ by Imogen Heap were used to create a mysterious, dark atmosphere. Our target audience was 15+ as some of the concepts were quite mature ie, sexual abuse and arson. We used 1 frame which acted as a door and a mirror. A rostra in centre back of the stage was used as a bed. We didn’t use many props except from a few wine bottles, gasoline tubs and ripped pieces of paper in the ending sequence to symbolize the fire.…

Every writer, author, and poet portrays stories in their own way. Homer , the poet who wrote "The Odyssey", and Margaret Atwood, the poet who wrote "SIREN SONG", have different points of view on the sirens. The song that the sirens sang was different in both of the poems. The poets' opposing uses of imagery illustrated the sirens differently. In addition, the tones that the poets used were different.…

Picture yourself in Tornado Alley, it’s a bright sunny day, you’re at the park having a great day with your children, then the tornado siren sounds. What do you do? It’s sunny outside, you look up and there are no clouds to be seen. Do you take cover or do you continue enjoying your day at the park? Is it 10 a.m. on a Monday morning, when they are testing the sirens? No, it is 3:37 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. This is a serious problem that plagues the Midwest every spring. Sirens become common place and are often ignored, simply because most people have heard this siren more times than they can count, yet they have never once seen a tornado. Now, let us take a look at what happens when the tornado sirens sound and there is a real threat, yet people ignore it because, “Tornados don’t happen in Joplin”. (This essay will not be cited because it is all based on first-hand experience)…

The novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner is filled with moments of great heroism and with struggles that are almost epic, but the novel’s take on such battles is ironic at best, and at times it even makes them seem downright absurd or mundane. The Bundren family is on a mission to bury Addie. In the midst they defeat water and fire on the way to Jefferson where Addie is to be buried. Their take on these engagements seem heroic, but they come to the point where the family’s’/ family member(s) actions are more foolish than anything.…

In Greek mythology, there are half-bird half-woman creatures called Sirens who use their wonderful singing voice to lure sailors to jump into the sea and drown. “Siren Song”, a poem by Margaret Atwood, is a retelling of the classic Greek tale from the Sirens’ perspective. In the poem, one of the Sirens complains to the reader about her situation. She is assigned by gods to stay on a secluded island along with two other Sirens, with nothing to do but obey her duty of enchanting sailors over and over again. Deprived of liberty to break free from this restraining position, the Siren expresses her exasperation and frustration, and requests help from the reader. However, as the poem unfolds, her cry for help turns out to also be a trick to lure unassuming men to her rescue. At the end of the day, she is unable to leave her designated role. Through the depiction of a desperate Siren, the writer is hinting at the difficulties faced by women in real life as well. Women are constrained by plenty of societal expectations and roles imposed upon them, just like the Sirens. For instance, in the workplace, it is less common and expected for women to take on advanced or managerial positions; in the household, they are the housekeeper and caregiver; in a romantic relationship, they are expected to be submissive and visually pleasant, etc. It can be difficult and frustrating to break free from these expectations. The poem is about the distress a woman experiences about being stuck in a designated role and trying to break free. This distress is caused by the reluctance of having to give up the mental comfort provided by following her role, the fear of betraying her group, and the lack of ability and means to break free from her designated role.…

I believe resiliency is something a person does not realize he/she possesses until faced with adversity. The environment in which I was raised, gave me the opportunities and experiences needed to develop and adapt to the adversities I have faced in life. As a child, each time I was faced with adversity I was able to maintain allostasis and return to homeostatis. I honestly feel that now, more than ever, is a time I am demonstrating resiliency, as I am adapting to a new state of homeostasis as a young adult with Multiple Sclerosis.…
