Freshman year; everyone in the high school, Highland, is required to play at least two seasons of sports in their high school career. Now, last year I was head over heels into riding (no pun intended). Feeling this way, I thought I would have no time for any other sports and would just get an exemption from my horse trainer to excuse me from sports. But, my best friend, Kayla Soltys then came into play. Kayla plays two sports, lacrosse and basketball. Kayla was very persistent in asking me to play lacrosse that spring and finally, I gave in. I thought it would be cool to try a new sport and I would have nothing to lose, only things to gain such as endurance and better hand eye coordination. My maternal grandmother Shirley Rae Harrington grew up during World War Two. But despite the war, she lived a somewhat normal childhood. When she was young there were very few other children in the area to play with and her younger sister, Sissy, was paralyzed. So she often played by herself in a stream nearby. Her family also owned several horses, chickens, pigs and a billy goat. Surprisingly she didn't get into much trouble as a child, except once when her family was down in our properties Maryland. People were racing speedboats in the creek, so she asked a neighbor who her family knew if she could go. He said yes and took her in his own boat when they got back her parents were fine but Mimi was upset with her. Her first travel experience…

I don’t remember much about how my family died, I was just a three year old boy; Keenan Waren. All I can remember is it was Thanksgiving day with my whole family. I know it was this day because the smell of the turkey was burnt into my memory, and it’s also what the people at the orphanage told me as I was growing up. Something else I can recall is seeing a tall, bulky shadow holding a green flame in his hand after the lights shut off. Everyone was screaming, but I am still unsure of what was happening to them. My mom carried me out into the rainy night in front of the house in my carseat, and I was crying for the teddy bear my aunt gave me for my first birthday. I kept crying, so my mom covered me with blanket and ran back inside to grab it…

Being a psychiatrist, I have heard a lot of crazy stories, but my friend Charley’s story is by far the craziest. I was sitting at my brown wooden desk in my small lavender smelling office when I heard a knock at the door. Knock. Knock. Immediately, Charley walked in wearing a tan gabardine suit, and a straw hat with a fancy black band. He had a smile from ear to ear and would not stop talking about the third level at Grand Central Station. A few minutes later, Charley asked, “Do you believe in time travel?” before I could answer he shouted, “Well I do! I was transported to 1894, but when I tried to purchase two coach tickets to Galesburg, Illinois, I didn’t have the right currency. Therefore, I went to the bank and drew out $300 and went to the nearest coin dealer and got less than $200 in old-time…

Since I was young, my parents have always taught my sister and I the value of giving your time to help others. When my mom had asked if we would be interested in being volunteers for Carly’s Crossing ten years ago, I would have never guessed the impact I could make not just for pediatric cancer patients and their families at Roswell Park, but the impact volunteering had on myself. Looking back, I have now realized that Carly’s Crossing has helped me to build character.…

Theatre was not something that came naturally to me. When I came to Gautier High School, I was a quiet, reserved middle schooler just as ready to piss his pants as any other in his grade with the exception that I had the knowledge to not show it. I had yet to speak above a whisper and my yell was akin to a mouse’s yawn. In the words of a few teachers, I was “the most socially maladjusted child they had ever seen.” I was not a hot-shot and I most certainly didn’t crave to be the center of attention. So, in the moment of insanity that was my ninth grade year, I decided to audition for a school play. In the process of destroying preconceived notions, I met the singular most influential person, the director and theatre teacher, Amanda Brown.…

Having spent a large portion of my life in Japan, I expected that being “the new kid from Japan” would make me somewhat unique facilitating my acceptance into the group. The reality was, however, that my classmates were not interested in my Japan experiences. Many kids asked if I spoke Chinese or wanted to know why I didn’t have a Japanese name. Bringing in nori (seaweed) and onigiri (rice balls) for lunch only served to differentiate me further from my contemporaries. Consequently, I needed to adapt and find a different way to fit into my new school. I quickly learned that lacrosse was very prominent on Long Island, and came to realize that by playing lacrosse I could develop a common bond with my peers while channeling my competitive nature into a sport popular in the community. Through hard work, dedication and sacrifice, I have attained a respectable level of success in the sport of lacrosse, and have leveraged my achievements to carve out a niche within my social…
