Personal Narrative: An Interview With Justin Nichols
My informational interview with Justin Nichols taught me a lot more about unscripted casting and showed me how everyone’s path to success in the entertainment industry is unique. Although I had met professionals in television who did not think about having a career in the industry until after college, almost all of them broke into the TV business as assistants for executives. Justin’s path is extremely interesting because he had never worked in television, but his personality and networking strengths led him to producer job for his first job in the industry. Despite Justin’s lack of experience in television, he intelligently recognized his skills from previous jobs that would be useful in casting, such as his friendliness, his interviewing experience, and his ability to relate to people. Speaking with Justin about his path to being a Casting Producer assured me that there is no one “right way” …show more content…
In my internships and on-campus experiences, I have mostly worked in production and development. I am unfamiliar with the ins and outs of casting for scripted and unscripted projects. Before speaking with Justin, I did not know how different it was to cast for unscripted versus scripted TV or film. I was surprised to learn that nearly all unscripted casting producers search for talent on their own, rather than choose from a pool of interested applicants. Previously, I thought that unscripted casting producers would watch hundreds or thousands of casting tapes and then narrow down their pool to an eventual cast. However, Justin’s job entails that and more because he has to find talent, reach out to potential cast members for interviews, schedule interviews with them, and then decide who he wants to proceed with. As Justin mentioned, it is much harder to find a strong cast in today’s television landscape because the reality television world is so saturated, and many potential stars are

The celebrity culture that is idolized today was in actuality a ploy used to attract an audience following. Stars were created, not born. The Studio System comprised of The Big Five (MGM, Paramount, Warner Brothers, RKO and Fox), who are credited for creating some of the most legendary stars of the time, thus leading to the term ‘star system’. Studios invested a great deal of time and money into grooming and publicizing an actor, and owning him in the process, simply by signing him to a contract. When an actor had inscribed his name on the formidable piece of paper, he had no future of his own. Depending on his talent and the response his image got from the audience, he was either crucial or dispensable to the Studio he had been employed by.…

He goes to the hoop. He jumps, hanging in the air for what felt like eternity. It was his second game. Brought up from the D-League, he needed to prove himself. His name is Jeff “Elmo” Beige. As the ball is coming down, closer to the hoop another individual comes into play. The name is unnecessary to know, but the man is key to Jeff’s story. The man jumps. He didn’t have to, but he did it anyway. His six-foot ten body could have easily blocked the shot on Jeff’s six-foot five structure. As Jeff’s hand with the ball comes crashing toward the net the man’s hand makes contact with the ball. The ball doesn't even touch the rim. Rejected at the rim. Jeff’s career is over at that very moment. One block defined his whole basketball career. Such a dejected ending for a fantastic story.…

I was casted in a particularly influential role, as one of the more prominent characters in the plot; this also gave me the opportunity to work extensively with each cast member, and venture into how these individual interactions would vary. I also endeavoured to be focused and dedicated throughout the entire rehearsal period, admittedly there were times when this level of attitude dropped, surrounded by such a lively ensemble. However, I thought the cast worked admirably well together; and I hope I was able to contribute to the supportive working environment that was established. Leading up to production week, the general consensus was the performance felt flat, and there was a certain lack of energy on stage. As a whole, this can largely be linked to the cast’s level of projection and stage presence. Ultimately, as actors we had to be constantly involved and present with the action unfolding to bring life to the story; this was a struggle after months of what seemed a repetitive and tiresome rehearsal process. Despite this, the cast was able to pull off a solid performance; and the audience’s presence re-sparked a lost spirit in the…

These words, coming from a man who produced his own magic through his acting while the world watched and waited. As one of the world’s most prolific examples of a “method actor”, Brando dazzled audiences beginning on the stage and later on the screen. Though his off stage life story trumped any of those he played, we have yet to see another actor who can display the emotion and passion of their characters as Brando did.…

Two organizations in particular made a lasting impression on me, one of which is the PSUTV Network. Coming to a big school like Penn state as a intended film major with little experience, I found the PSUTV Network to be an opportunity to expand myself, getting that much closer to my degree. The TV network strives to provide a new, hands-on experience for beginners right from the start. For that reason, I knew right away that this club would be a great start to my new journey here at Penn State. In time, this club will provide an entire foundation that I can use as a stepping-stone into the world to help me achieve my greatest goals of being a producer.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb.
