Personal Narrative: An Anniversary Toast To Parents
An Anniversary Toast to Parents

What's more, in this day and age when the divorce rate is around 50%, and when so many people seem to be out for themselves first -- or themselves alone -- mom and dad continue to serve as the greatest, sweetest example of what love and respect and This is really a beautiful occasion -- the 50th wedding anniversary, the GOLDEN anniversary -- of our parents, Warren and Ann-Marie Rodriguez. On behalf of my brothers, I'll say this: We three have sure been lucky to have those two as our parents. We always felt that way.

When we were young, mom and dad had their hands full trying to make ends meet. Dad drove a truck, mom went back for her nursing degree. During the week, mom was away, at school. My point is this: Dad was the one who cooked for us. We had more chipped beef on toast than the US Army in both world wars. That's not a complaint. Far from it. We were always well-fed, and well-loved.

He never lit one for himself without lighting one for her, too. All that lighting up, we're convinced, led to dad's carpal tunnel diagnosis. Of course, the happiest ending of all to this little story is that mom and dad quit smoking years ago.

In 1964, dad and his brother and their uncle opened a restaurant/bowling alley. We all worked there and it was great. Dad sold that place years ago, but mention the Casa Nova to anybody in our community, to this day, and they still remember it with a lip-smacking smile.

For family, for friends, for stray animals, for anyone, mom and dad have been there with help and kindness and love. Their generosity -- in every way -- is amazing, and inspiring. I can tell you a million stories, including the one of when our widowed uncle died and left three young boys, mom and dad took those boys into our home and raised

I’ve been with my mom for about five years going through emotional moments and times, but I still see her wake up everyday, feed us, and go to work. I see my dad come home some days at 12am, get about 4 hours of sleep, and wake up for his next job. I try to acknowledge these sacrifices and not be a bad child to compensate. I am sure this is not enough. I see all the work my parents are doing, knowing all they ask for is for us to be successful in life. I will make sure of that and more, getting their retirement earlier than they think. But first things first,…

I think my parents are hero worthy because they constantly put themselves aside for me and my other two sisters. My parents names are Heidi and Jody Ingle. They have been together since 5th grade, but they didn't actually start dating until their freshman year, shortly after graduation they were married. They always ask if we need money or anything for the sports we play, we are always the top priority. I do feel bad sometimes because I know I will never be able to pay back everything they've bought and done for me, but even if they never bought me or did anything for me I would still love them the exact same.…

The person i chose to interview was my mother, and the topic we chose was how her and my dad met. My parents were born in california, not anywhere out of california or america. Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…

I didn't grow up in the most conventional household. My parents both worked and we consistently had babysitters and nannies taking care of us most of my childhood. My mom was the “breadwinner” she had always made significantly more than my dad and there was really no reason for my dad to work in the first place, he really just did it because he loved it. As my 4 brothers and I got older it got progressively harder on my parents being away from home so much. When a job opportunity with less hours and a sizable amount of money came to my mom she was quick to consider it. She eventually made her decision, consulting my dad very little, she made the decision to move across the country to a place we all had never been to.…

When I was thirteen I had the worst summer of my life. Three major things contributed to that; first, I had to miss my grade eight graduation to go on a family vacation to Poland (which at the time was devastating for me) second, I stressed for 2 whole months worrying over my first day of high school, and third, I realized my grandfather was actually the meanest person I had ever met. Let me start off by saying that I had never even thought my grandpa was that great of a person to begin with. But his moody periods and grumpy fits could be chalked off to the strain of old age, and although inexcusable, his homophobia and racism was something he grew up with, but when he finally showed me his true colours that summer I lost it. My grandfather blew his top at me, cussed me out and kicked my mom, grandma and me out of the house for no reason other than his fun.…

And since my parents never showed even the slightest signs of weakness, fatigue, or dejection, I grew up under the warmth of their radiant, loving smiles. However, looking back, I took a lot for granted, mistakenly believing that everything they did for me was merely expected. Similarly, I regret all those stubborn and meaningless arguments I’d have with them over the minute details. At these moments, I did not recognize how grateful and fortunate I actually was to have such devoted, loving parents.…

This is a tribute to a man that has always been and will always be my mentor. His name is Alan Dale Jacobson, he is my father. He is not technically my father by blood, but he is by far the best father I could have ever asked for. He taught me many things like pride, honesty, to put my family above all things, and how to be an honorable man.…
