Personal Narrative: An Alluring Car
The ride through downtown was like no other in this alluring car, having the window opened, feeling the breeze of the air on this hot sunny day, catching every eye I passed. I felt like I was showing off. As I smoothly pull up on a red light intersection, a man in a gray 2002 subaru WRX pulls up next to me. He takes a quick glance at my ride then slowly stares into my eyes with concentration as if he were trying to challenge me.

This man’s was very recognizable, I knew I’ve seen him before; he had bright blonde hair and light blue eyes. He gave me a look of rivalry and envy. His car was fixed like a racer’s with the special wheels and custom parts which energized me to go for the ride, I knew it would be a constant race with the car comparison, so it was all up to the superior driver.

I'm not just going to throw this challenge away like nothing because this was my prospect as a driver.

I started thinking of how hard I've been working for my car and how it's always been my dream to drive my very own, and this man wants to challenge me to a race, I think of the consequences of how I could get in trouble maybe hurt or even lose my car! I look at the man as he kept a serious face staring at me once again, I grip my steering wheel and breath to let the energy flow and concentrate. The man starts rubbing his engine once again as so do I, keeping a straight face and staring at the light; the light turns

As we approach I now notice the gentleman is propped up on a crate. His legs are crossed and appear to provide the perfect support for his resting arms and hand holding a sign “Homeless Veteran.” Is this crate what he carries his belonging in? Does he have belongings? A moral dilemma begins to erupt within myself. Am I intruding as I peer at him as he encounters each vehicle? Am I interrupting a private moment? Am I invading his spotlight? My eyes are drawn to the ground as I notice a crisply folded, unwrinkled Chick-fil-a bag placed at his feet. His boots are so dust-covered it looks as if it has replaced the black all over. His pants are an unassuming grey-like green. They are modest and seem to serve their purpose without extravagance. His demeanor is calm and quiet. His movements are soft, subtle, and seem to only be executed as a sign of necessity. Without hesitation, the car pulls…

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

Turning off the ignition, I heaved a sigh of relief to unwind from the nerve-wracking experience. A thought crept its way to the front of my mind, disturbing my relaxed state; I was driving. I had dreamt of this since I was a tyke in lower school, and here I was, driving myself to school. While I would assuredly enjoy the freedom driving offered, the feeling was anti-climactic. It was not everything I had chalked it up to be. Why is it, that after so many years of dreaming, the former magic of driving had vanished? Now it was just a means of achieving a vague sense of independence. After a moment’s pause, I finally concluded that I was older. Somewhere, between here and there, I had grown up just a…

The second time I made the trek out to the DMV I made another mistake. It wasn’t as serious as the last time, but it was enough to fail me again. I pulled up to the penultimate intersection to turn left just before I realized how far to the right I was in a street with no lanes. I thought the test proctor wouldn’t notice, until a huge black truck tried to pull into the street at an excruciatingly slow pace just to get by me.…

Roller coaster rides are extremely petrifying, obscuring, and agitating. I remembered getting into my seat and strapped in. It’s the biggest test known to man: the driver’s test. At sixteen, starving for the slightest taste of freedom, it seems like your one and only lifeline to the great unknown. It’s intimidating, but I was ready. Failure was not an option to me. Walking in, I expected to pass with flying colors. After all, I’d been practicing! I got all my hours in, even got all my night driving hours in. I was beyond prepared… or so I thought. I got in the car with the driver instructor and suddenly all the blood in my body rushed to my head. I couldn’t think straight. But it wasn’t over yet. The cab ride was about an hour, give or take. Under normal circumstances it might take maybe two hours, but in Mexico, where there is no paved road, there is no speed limit. Instead, the driver, well-acquainted with the winding, deadly path, would drive his little stick-shift car at about 60 or 70 miles per hour. As many times as I have taken that trip, I am still to this day afraid that something could go terribly wrong and we will hurtle off the steep cliffs. Especially when there is another vehicle on the road, going the opposite way just as fast as we are. But the best part of all is that around turns, the car does not slow down one bit. On the contrary, sometimes it goes a little faster.…

The man is now stuck in the traffic with the rest of the workers, trying to make there way home as fast as possible. Gridlock can be seen in both directions, an endless heap of cars, with the sounds of many engines leave a distasteful smell of exhaust.
