Personal Narrative About Homeless People In NY
I decided this summer, to use the free time for painting a comic. The protagonist of this comic, I determined, was a homeless person of color living in NYC. Notwithstanding I have been always especially active in my community, and have volunteered in several programs that benefit homeless people of color and LGBTQ, the research I made about homeless people in NY was an eye opener.

Known as the “City of Trees” for its abundance of greenery, my hometown of Sacramento, California could also be called the “City of the Homeless”. There are staggering numbers of homeless Sacramentans and a significant amount of people who lack consistent access to nightly shelter. On any given night, the homeless population of Sacramento County totals nearly 2,700 people (www.sacramentostepsforward.org), and this number is on the rise.…

A problem that persists through every part of the world is a lack of compassion for the homeless. No matter how many charities are available for people to donate to, they are often careless and forgetful. This problem stems from laziness and a lack of motivation to be involved. This carelessness can account for the lack of resources or the lack of knowledge about resources for the homeless.…

I am one of the 220,000 that are homeless each and every night in Australia. Us as homeless people, we don’t really get seen as ‘’positive’’ people, we’re mostly seen as negative. A way we can be seen as positive, is if we as homeless people that have turned our life around successfully or if we are recorded giving to anther homeless who needs it more and is uploaded to Facebook or any social media. Which isn’t regular as we don’t often get fed most nights.…

Homeless people all around the world are starving and nobody is doing anything about it. Homelessness is defined as a person who "lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence." (Cite)They are starving because of the poverty in the world, the whole world's population as we know it, and community's pretending not to see it happening . Poverty is a big thing that affects homelessness in the U.S (cite) . The population increases every day and that makes the world more populated and creates more homeless people. The community pretends that they do not see people and just let them die right in their faces Worldwide, homelessness is caused by a breakdown in traditional family support systems, continued urbanization, the effects of structural adjustment programs, civil wars, and natural disasters. In 2008, I moved to an apartment in Rockaway Park located in Far Rockaway. I’ll admit, the neighborhood was far from attractive when I first arrived. The rumor mills stirred up a storm suggesting that Far Rockaway was well… “Rough around the edges” for a lack of a better term. Working on Riker’s Island, most of our patients who reside in Queens often came from Far Rockaway, thereby confirming the rumors that the town was riddled with crime, infested with drugs and plagued with anything one might consider rebellious or unscrupulous were true. And on my first day, I got lost and winded up surrounded by… you guessed it, The Projects. That was enough to dither anyone from any potential Real Estate or, in my case, rental agreement – regardless how appealing the offer could be. So why did I agree to move there in spite of the distasteful first impression? Before I can answer that, allow me to dive into the demographic details and…

In this photo, you see the front or side door of a office building littered with clothes and a bag probably filled with clothes at the location stated above. This photo was taken at evening time when driving down Raymond Boulevard, close to the downtown area of Newark. What is seen in this photo, probably shows an area where a homeless individual will rest their head for the night.…

Homeless people have the tendency to treat the streets of cities like their personal homes. It’s only natural that they do this because hey, the streets are their homes. But this becomes a problem when you are strolling the streets of your beautiful city and are overwhelmed and distressed by the horrific stench of urine and waste consume the side walk. Like I said before, the sidewalks are homeless people’s homes but when you have to hold your breath, it becomes a problem.…

Poverty is viewed as the underbelly of society, a topic continuously being pushed to the shadows. Unspoken, yet commonly seen, the homeless are pressured from the streets by the desire to give the impression of cleanliness that society so desperately tries to obtain and preserve. The homeless seem to be a necessity of society, someone needs to fall for others to grow. The eradication of poverty is a continuous goal of many individuals, yet it unceasingly persists even in the most developed of countries. But is this a choice of the people in the society or the natural order of things?…

When walking through a major city, have you ever wondered why most of the homeless community seems to suffer from a mental disability? The truth is over 50% of the homeless suffer from mental illness; in fact, the rise in mental illness in the homeless community can be traced as a direct impact from the Reagan administration from the mid 1980’s. After becoming elected, former president Reagan passed several acts which deliberately released hundreds of thousands of uncured mentally ill patients from secure institutions by defunding most mental health services. Almost five decades later, we see the repercussions of those acts in the form of homelessness, which has risen by 26% in major urban cities, and nearly 50% of homeless citizens suffer…

Homelessness in America is more serious than people think. There are more vacant homes in America than homeless people. That should set off alarms in people’s heads. Also, not just old men and women are homeless. The LGBTQ community has a lot of people out on the street, mostly due to the lack of acceptance they receive from other people. There’s also a huge risk for transgenders in shelters, some even being turned away and banned from some homes (LGBT Homeless 1). 20% of the whole homeless population is LGBTQ, which might not sound like a lot, but that equals to a lot. It seems that the portion of the LGBTQ community that is homeless are more prone to abuse and mistreatment as well. 58.7% of the LGBTQ youth have been sexually assaulted or victimized. That is a sickening number. The suicide rate is also very high, it being around 62%. It’s also shown that homeless heterosexuals aren’t prone like the LGBTQ are, which is also a sad thing to hear (LGBT Homeless 1).…

The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…

My experiences serving others have exposed me to the issues my community faces and have shown me that I can make a difference. My first experience working with underserved populations in my community was serving food at Union Station Homeless Services’ Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park in high school. This made me step out of my comfort zone and interact with a group I was unfamiliar with. Through serving food and interacting with homeless and low-income families, I saw that my small actions could brighten one’s day. This inspired me to start Heal L.A. at UCLA with some of my classmates. We wanted to help the significant homeless population surrounding our campus in any way possible. What started as buying meals and conversing with them has grown…
