Personal Narrative: A Hero Of Social Justice
As I look back on the work of past social justice heroes such as, Mohandas Gandhi, Malcolm X, Dorothy Day, and Martin King Jr., and the social justice movements I have grown up to see, such as the LGBT community and the Black Lives Matter movement, I tend to ponder how those individuals and movements were able to make such an impact on society. With these elements pulled together, one can find the answer of what it means to be their own “hero”. …show more content…
Hero: one who shows great courage. The individuals previously stated were confronted with many issues along their path, but they showed a plethora of courage to get around those issues. Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

A hero is someone who cares about other people's lives than their own. Many people can call themselves a hero but don’t act like a hero. For example, in the book The Odyssey by Homer, the main character Odysseus is sailing with his men after the Trojan War, and he sees himself as a hero. On his way home from the battle a terrible storm had hit that was made by Zeus, the god of all gods, and his way home was turned into an adventure. Odysseus’ actions on the adventure makes his a very disrespectful guy, that caused his own imprisonment because he invaded Polyphemus’ cave and stayed, when he didn’t tell his men about Scylla and Charybdis when they were approaching them, and the fact that he let his men eat the sun god’s, Helios’, cattle.…

This past Summer, as part of my social justice service hour requirement, I volunteered as a big buddy at the Miracle League of Green Bay.The Miracle League is a program that allows children and teens with a disability to play baseball. A big buddy helps one of the players run the bases and hit the ball. Every week you play a different team but have the same buddy. As a big buddy it is also your job to communicate with the player and get to know more about them. My favorite part of this experience was getting to know my player. My player (name), was an eleven year old boy. When I first met him I thought it was going to be hard to relate or talk to him however, as the season went on I realized I was totally wrong. I asked him about what interested…

It was August 28, 1963. Mom was yelling and holding up her “Martin Luther King, a liar, a troublemaker” sign. Next to her were my brother and my dad, they just mumbled and cursed. While everyone cheered and jumped for joy when Dr. King uttered the words, “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood”, it was like my whole family rolled their eyes simultaneously. All but me, I was the only one who thought that every man should have equal rights regardless of their race, beliefs, gender (etc…). I sided with the rest of the people at the Lincoln Memorial who believed in equal rights.…
