Personal Narrative: A Career In Theater
One thing I do differently from everyone else is to set goals that are unattainable to reach. To most people, doing this might sound ridiculous, but attempting to rise to or above perfection allows me to become the best person I can be. While it may seem like I am the most extreme form of a perfectionist you can find, there is reason behind my madness, which all started with me being in theatre. I have participated in our theater program at my high school since I was a freshman. One of my favorite things about live theater is how much can go wrong. Every show has a little bit of chaos in it, and the screw ups make for great stories later. The trick to mastering this imperfect art is to make yourself better every single time you go onstage. I adopted this mindset from my director, Justin Harnden. If we ran a scene and it was worse than a previous time, he would simply say “not good enough” and make us run it again. The idea behind it was not to achieve perfection, but to become as close as possible to it. This method set his student’s bar completely out of reach, yet always just at our fingertips.

In the classroom, I constantly aim to get a one-hundred percent on every single test I take, no less. This requires me to know the information for each subject inside and out. Do I achieve my goal? Most of the time, no. It is nearly impossible to get a one-hundred on everything you do, and I recognize that. However, if I do not receive the one-hundred that I strive for, attempting to strive for perfection gets me pretty high marks. Is it ever good enough? No, but we must also be able to congratulate ourselves on things we have done good. An low A on a test is nothing to sneeze at, but if you set the bar there, that is all you will ever be able to

Most people think that their goal in life is to be perfect. They strive for the best grades, to be the best one on the sports’ team, get the most scholarships, go to the best college, and to get the highest paying job. In reality, aiming for perfection only leads to downfall. When a person strives for perfection the only thing that can happen is disappointment. Since no one in life is truly perfect, goals will not be met, and disappointment will have to be faced. In her speech Commencement Speech at Mount Holyoke College, Anna Quindlen explores the topic of perfection and how striving for it can put a damper on life. By using rhetorical devices and appealing to pathos, Quindlen is able to effectively drive her point home.…

After years of being myself, I have learned that I am a perfectionist. When I was younger, I would have been embarrassed to admit it because I was stubborn. Everything had to have the best outcome for me or else I would have a melt down. Denying that I was a perfectionist was impossible for anyone, including myself, since I would always strive to have the best grades, have the best handwriting, draw the best pictures, read at the highest level, and win games. Throughout elementary school I have had this unwavering drive to be the best that has stuck. Most elementary students do not have to worry much because they are still young and have not been given a lot of responsibilities. They do not strive to be the best because they do not get that many of their actions and accomplishments will matter in the future when doing things like applying for jobs. Although I did not understand that school would affect where I could go to college and what job opportunities I would have, I was hard on myself. I would try to do my best, but I would convince myself that my best was not good enough. This made me very stubborn when it came to being told I was not doing something right. When reading books out loud, I would be upset if I was told I…
