Personal Narrative: A Career In Psychology

Before I took psychology, the first thing that popped into my head when I heard the word psychology was the picture of a therapist with a scratch pad in one hand and a pencil in the other, listening to patients as they go on and on about current issues, previous experiences and feelings. I knew that I would never personally pursue a career as a therapist and believed that taking a psychology class would not be beneficial at all to the major of Audiology and Speech Pathology that I’m currently working towards. Although I did not have any interest in the class, I was required to enroll in the class in order to fulfill the general education requirement that I had to fulfill in order to graduate. Before the class, I was led to the belief that this class would be a complete waste of my time. After only a short period of time I spent in the class, my idea on psychology changed substantially.
It can be used toward any and every career path you could imagine. One of the very first things taught in the class was the six principles of scientific thinking. These principles were used in order to grasp each topic discussed throughout the book at a deeper level. After an entire semester of seeing these principles on just about each and every page of the entire psychology book, I have a great understanding of these principles and now I can easily and naturally use these principles in real life in order to determine if something is scientifically.
