Personal Narrative: A Career In Pre-Calculus
Of the 75% of students who graduate high school and finish their required 13 years of schooling, I believe that I have taken it to the next level. Looking back at my past years of schooling, I see a lot of moments where I excelled and that I can be proud of and yet, hidden deep in the files of my educational life, I can see moments where I messed up. Only later on did I recognize that I could have done better. One such moment occurred recently, in junior year, when I almost failed Pre-Calculus. Academically, I have always been strong. Teacher assigns an essay on the symbolic values of the color green? No problem. Physics lab report due the next day? I’ll get it done. Using scalar multiplication to do something strange to vectors? Might take some blood, sweat and tears. This became a huge problem in Pre-Calculus. Math has always been hard from me and once the alphabet snuck its way in with the numbers, everything became so much more difficult. I experienced math without numbers and triangles of whom had more secrets than a spy. I hardly understood what I was doing. It was like walking through a dark maze with a small pen light. Math just didn’t click with me well. I tried and tried to understand it, spent long hours studying, lunches with my math teacher and my free time re-reading the chapters. …show more content…
Once I set my mind on something, I’ll work at it until I get it, whether it be a new gadget or a grade in a class. I’m passionate about my future and I want to succeed in order to benefit myself, the people around me and my community. These things about me are what I consider to be some of my most important personal qualities. For some, Math may not have been a deciding factor in their life, but it was definitely my make or break it moment. As Tim Gunn would say, “It’s your make it work moment, so make it work.” It may have taken me longer than usual, but I am fixing my mistakes and that is something I am proud

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

I started out as an ignorant 7th grader who barely made AIME to a slightly less ignorant 8th grader who barely made USAJMO. In 7th grade, I did not even know what the nine-point circle was, and now in 8th grade, I am able to prove its existence. In 7th grade, I could not work with polynomials and roots very well, and now in 8th grade, I can use polynomials quite efficiently. In 7th grade, I failed the AMC 10 with a pathetic score of 123, and now in 8th grade, I was able to score well enough on the AIME to qualify me for USAJMO. In 7th grade, I was complete garbage at combinatorics and number theory, and now in 8th grade, I... am still complete garbage at combinatorics and number theory.…

The only below average grade I have gotten in my life happened last year in Pre-AP Pre-Calculus. Math had been my strong suit for as long as I could remember, and I was devastated when I got my final report card. Knowing that my senior year was approaching fast, I had to change my plans. I switched from AP Calculus to AP Statistics, because I learned that branch of mathematics was not for me. Currently I am earing an A- in “Stats” and understanding the material very well. As an added bonus, statistics is great for individuals entering into a field of marketing or…

The majority of the time spent in any problem was figuring out what was being asked and that was the skill most of us struggled to develop. In those stressful moments on tests or any work in general it helped me realize that I had a weakness when it came to comprehension and problem solving skills while at the same time reassuring myself of my strength in math since other individuals would also struggle in that area even after figuring out the problem. However, it wasn't far from impossible and in fact those skills learned in problem solving and comprehension helped create the highlight of my junior year in terms of projects done. In the recent weeks after the AP tests were conducted in my Chemistry class we conducted a lab experiment in which using our own chemicals, materials, and designs conducted an experiment in an attempt to created an explosion. The reason being that this project was my favorite is because my groups was the only successful one to have worked using my…

A person who made an enormous impact on my life was my eighth grade math teacher. I'd had failed my seventh grade TAKS test and had to take a second math class for the year. I was extremely furious and disappointed that I had to take yet another math. I was and still am terrible at math, which just made the situation even worse. Within the first week, I kept failing my assignments, which was making my grade plummet. I came to my regular math teacher for help for my assignments to raise my grades. However, the way the teacher was explaining the math made absolutely no sense to me in any way. Fortunately, when I came to my TAKS math teacher for tutoring, the way he explained to me actually made things much more simpler in my work. Things started…

During my educational journey specifically at the high school, my goal was to be a best student in our year group. But I could not achieve it. I could not achieve it because, I thought I could do all my academical alone. I could not management my time well and also reframe myself from leadership and other peer responsibilities. One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort. Whenever I give my heart and soul on the assignment or projects, I am able to learn more than I should learn. I was able to discover new facts that I did not know. For example, in my Pre Calculus class, we did a project about global warming. I have to research about global warming and predict total population, average temperature, carbon dioxide emission in the next 50 and 100 years from now. I took my time and read articles about global warming. While looking at the statistic, I was asking myself what is cause of increasing population, temperature, and carbon dioxide emission. I realize those three factors are causing global warming. I made sure that I did the math correctly. I also made sure that I explained the definition, cause, and effect of the global warming. I gave my heart and soul by giving my best effort and making sure my data and information…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

In elementary the simple rubric math was relatively easy for me. I thought that during my last year in elementary, math would be no problem for me. Well, that was not the case. Sixth grade came and math became my worst nightmare. Once I passed sixth grade, seventh was no better and let’s not mention eight grade. In my freshman year in high school I finally was tired of barley passing math so I made it my goal to pass algebra 1 with an A. I first began to check out math books for dummies at my local library, and was more than determined to learn this. My hard work towards the end of my freshman year paid off and I ended the year with a grade higher than a 95. My teacher was impress with my efforts that he suggested that I double up on math and graduate with 6 math credits instead of the required four or five if…

Even though I passed 12th grade, i should had payed more attention. I knew i could've did better because i knew i had it in me. I should have got over the cockiness attitude, communicated better and just paid more attention because at the end it would have paid off. Misunderstood learning is nobody fault I believe if you want a bright future, and want to be successful its all about putting the work in. As Carol Dweck would say my senior year i was a fixed minded a person, that believes in their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success without…

As a humans we all have to experience certain situations in life, in order to figure out what we like and dislike. I can honestly say I’ve had my fair share of situations. I started working at Samsung call center as a full time employee. The job had excellent benefits, and room for growth and advancement. While I was working there I thought it was what I wanted, but as time progressed I realized it may not be for me. I had been out of school for 2 years when I accepted this job, so I wasn’t quite sure as to what career path I wanted to take. My decision at the time was to work full time and remain productive with that. Sometime you have to make a few changes within in yourself in order to grow as a person. Just because a certain job makes a decent amount of money doesn’t necessarily mean it is suitable for you.…

I was failing eighth-grade math. My last two test scores were devastating and were helping to ruin my math grade. The tests were difficult, but definitely passable. Most times I would think that I knew the material, only to miss half of the questions on the big test. I was also skipping homework assignments. I didn't know the answers, and I wouldn't even try to learn. Even when I studied for hours, I would still fail the work and have the terrible feeling of truly being lost on how to recover. Although grade was downright horrible, and it was going to drop even more, I soon found an unlikely candidate that would turn my school life around.…

Since the beginning of fifth grade, I have been involved in the math team. Before I became involved in the club, I considered math a relatively easy and simple subject. However, my first math team meeting proved me wrong. I remember staring down at a ciphering question and feeling absolutely lost. It embarrassed me that I didn’t immediately know the solution to the question, but at the same time, it thrilled me to face a problem I couldn’t answer. Now, my first math tournament in high school was a disappointment. We won nothing but a certificate of participation. Even though we left without a trophy, the experience was enjoyable. During my junior year, I wanted to place in the top 3 with my team members, so I dedicated time at home to practice.…
