Personal Narrative: A Career In Meteorology
At the age of 12, I was scrolling through the channel guide looking for something to watch like most bored kids do at that age, when I finally gave up. I ended up randomly turning to channel 62 where they were showing an episode of Storm Chasers. In my opinion, it was a show about crazy people risking their lives in pursuit of their passions. As I continued watching it, I developed a sudden interest in how nature could create something so beautiful yet hazardous.

This interest grew into such a passion that I even watched hurricane sandy through an open window. I know crazy. But it didn't just stop there. Just last year at a sleep away camp, I saw a Lightning bolt strike a tree that was at least 20 yards away. I was petrified and exhilarated. While everyone cowered away from the approaching storm, I watched. From then on I knew I wanted to study meteorology.

I would keep track of all the upcoming storms and threats in my area along with around the country. When I told my family and friends of my interest, some were shocked, some were intrigued, and others were just confused as to what Meteorology even is. Even though a career in Meteorology is not commonly heard of, I am still determined to find out more about this fascinating field of

This being my first semester as a sports editor for the paper has taught me so much. Writing every week different stories has helped me become a more well rounded sports writer and familiarizing myself with different sports. I was able to get out of my comfort zone by writing about different sports that I never associated myself with such as lacrosse, swimming and soccer. I always considered myself to be the "baseball girl" but now I believe that I have become the "sports girl". I feel so much more comfortable writing every week and generate new ideas to write about. Writing for the paper has not only helped me personally with sports, but it helped me both as a professional and as a journalist. I have now tons of clippings to show future employers…

“There’s always an ending to whatever began” is what my long time neighbor, [NEIGHBORS NAME]said the last day she lived near us as our neighbor. Although I rarely see her anymore, she was, and most likely, still the same enthusiastic person she was. She has gave knowledge to not only me, but my also my family. Not only has she been an inspiration to me, but due to her amiability, she has been a muse person brainstorming about how she can make a better community. [NAME HERE ] is significant to me because she has taught me morals in my life to appreciate whatever we have, the importance of helping around the community, and to apply as much effort on whatever must be accomplished.…

All of the journeys that lead to greatness start with a dream, whether it is big or small, but what the person does with their dream is what controls whether it comes true. “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” -Walt Disney. Anyone can have a dream but just like Walt Disney said, they need to have the courage to pursue them if they are to come true. Even today, if a child is asked what they dream of being when they grow up, they usually answer with a police officer or firefighter. The reason for this is because at such a young age all they are interested in is superheroes who save people and the closest thing they have to a superhero is a police officer or firefighter. My answer to this question of course was…

Have you ever had a dream that you were running from something terrifying and no matter what you did, you couldn't escape it? The dreams I have experienced about tornadoes have left me with the feelings of desperation, because I know that they are a force beyond my control. I could not imagine the immense pain people endure after having their lives destroyed by this vicious catastrophe. In my opinion, tornadoes are the most frightening natural disasters for both their mental and physical destruction.…

Around the time I was ten I started realize my curiosity for the weather. But at first it wasn’t always that way. I used to be terrified of storms and would try to “hide” from them and refuse to come out until they were done. It was only when I started to realize that a simple thunderstorm couldn’t harm me did I become curious about them. Also, my mother was a very large influence for my interest in the weather. Once I started to show my curiosity…

Hi, I’m Lilly. I am ten years old. I live in New Orleans on 22nd Avenue. I heard that there’s a hurricane coming and it is called Hurricane Katrina. It is also a category five hurricane. Two days later mom, dad, Cleo, and Michael woke me up and the house was full of water. Dad told us to get on the roof. My best friend, Claire, lives next door to me. I saw her on the roof. I yelled her name and asked her if she’s okay and she said she was. I was very nervous. I could hear the wind blowing in my ear. It was so scary. I was very concerned about all of the neighborhood. After the hurricane I was depressed because of my house and my friend Claire’s house. After everything was cleaned up I was going back to school. Whenever I was getting off the bus I saw a stray puppy. It was very skinny and I felt very sorry for him. I also named him Donovan. I stuck him in my backpack and the backpack was a little bit open so he could breathe. After school I went to my new house and could hear him barking so I stopped and gave him a kiss. I am glad that God kept us safe. My mom and dad prayed every day that my grandparents would be safe. I called my grandparents to see if they were okay.…

Like many toddlers, I was fascinated by building blocks. They held me spellbound for hours on end and pushed me to make some imaginative, if not structurally unsafe buildings. I thus grew up with a great passion for architecture, and was very certain I would one day be an architect. But as I drifted into Secondary school, my interests changed. History, among all subjects captivated me the most. I grew very much interested in the past, and as I went from “Ancient Egypt” to “Communist Russia” I found myself captivated by the running of the world. Current affairs became my interest and I deviated from the cartoons in the newspapers to ground-breaking articles on the front page.…

Since weather affects us so constantly, I put together this page to help understand the science of weather. I am not much interested in weather forecasting, which is a very technical subject. This information is much more basic, about why weather "happens", what's going on in the atmosphere, what weather-related terms we see on TV really mean, how to read weather maps. It's mostly practical information, from a not very technical perspective.…

Meteorologists study atmospheric sciences and they perform a wide range of tasks, such as predicting weather patterns, measuring temperatures, air pressures and also includes broadcasting the analysed data to the public in a simple-to-understand way. However, they are only part of a wide spectrum in meteorology. Other meteorologists may include those involved in archive meteorology, which involves researching, verifying and reporting on past weather-related events. Meteorologists may also become teachers and professors in the field of specialty. The ‘typical weather forecaster’ may expect to work in a studio with various trackers and tools, then later working in a studio, interpreting the weather patterns displayed for the public. Most of the time, a meteorologist will use a computer, to manipulate data collected by other tools, devices and instruments, such as satellites, gauges and meters. Beware, meteorologists are not to be confused with climatologists, who study the long term trends rather than short term weather changes, as meteorologists do.…
