When I joined the police department, I knew I wanted to be a part of something great. I wanted to leave a legacy and make an impression on others. I was the first in my family to choose a career in law enforcement, so initially, I was unaware of the challenges this career field came with. My mom was a teacher, and my dad worked in the printing business. Both were successful in their chosen fields, but they were blind to the demands required for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. To be successful, I would need to be observant of those around me who had found success. I would need to mirror their ways and incorporate their habits into my own. The important pursuit of financial success is an idea that has been drilled into my head by the adults in my life from early on; my parents struggled in life, and for me they wanted a better, easier, future for me. I could not understand why so many of my classmates wanted to be writers and artists; didn't they too want to be successful? However, the summer before my senior year, I had an idea that would change my thought process forever: a visit to the gateway of success, the Naval Academy.…

My mom taught me to live by the Golden Rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have lived by this rule all my life. I have never had a problem getting along with others and treating them with respect until I started my nursing career as an LPN. I started working at the local hospital, working night shift. I really enjoyed going into work, helping the patients with their needs. I enjoyed visiting with them and finding out what would make their stay better. Then one day the supervising nurse in charge of the floor took me aside and told me to stop visiting with the patients. I was thinking to myself okay there has got to be a good reason behind this. She told me the patients need their sleep and they don’t need me to visit with them and keep them awake.…
