Personal Narrative: A Career As A Pharmacist
At eighteen years of age I had never worked a day in my life, but pharmacy had always been something I'd been intrigued with and had a desire for pursuing as a career. Thus volunteering at a local family pharmacy was my obvious choice when introduced with a senior project assignment. My initial intent was to discover the everyday work schedule of a pharmacist, gain some hands on experience, keep a log of my progress and achieve an easy grade. Little did I know, volunteering would assist me in developing lifelong professional skills to function efficiently in a work environment. I walked nervously through those swinging doors on my first day. Simply wearing a pair of dark faded jeans, a fitted gray hoodie, my trusty old worn in converse and my long hair thrown up into a ponytail. I've never been that person that takes an hour to get ready in the morning or even cares too much about judgement from others on the casual way I dress, but at that moment on that day I was acutely aware of my casual dress attire. Everyone was dressed in business slacks and skirts, nice blouses with their hair neatly done and definitely not wearing tennis shoes. I had many customers staring at me making me feel utterly out of place. After that day I closely followed the dress code and soon came to realize just how important dressing appropriately was. In a short length of time I was able to develop skills that I would continuously use moving forward. After six months of volunteering my desire to pursue a career in pharmaceuticals was solidified, but that first week will always be engraved in my memory.
