Personal Narrative: A Career As A Coach
he coach blew his whistle and as he let the small black plastic whistle drop from his lips he yelled “Everyone sit down at half court.”

There must be around thirty some seventh grades who had tried out to make the squad of fifteen that would make the team. I actually felt that I had a good chance of making the team. I was one of the taller boys trying out and felt I had a well enough understanding of the game. The tryouts themselves lasted for two nights, and each night of tryouts lasted a grueling two hours of running sprints, shooting drills, lay-up drills, and full court games. Overall my performance was not as good as I would have liked. I did very well with the lay-up drill. I was well trained using the correct technique, which is to

I was teamed up three other varsity basketball players from Gettysburg. Jason Shew, Kevin Lindsay, and Kevin Miller, were all very talented players which translated into more wins for our team. I sparingly got the ball in my hands since my teammates were so talented. I didn’t mind not having chances to score points because my team dominating the opposition. My opportunity to shine wasn’t until I saw Coach Townsend watching one of our four on four games. I saw him watching me play with great curiosity. Coach Townsend’s eyes glared with concentration, his understanding and knowledge for the game of basketball was obvious. I looked deep into the coach’s glassy brown eyes as if I were reading his thoughts, then he nodded as if to tell me to …show more content…
This time when I was passed the ball I decided to put the ball on the floor. I saw who was guarding me and knew I would have a good chance at being able to get around him if I used the right moves with the basketball. I dribbled once to my right and then to my left, I did this repeatedly switching hands each time the ball went to a different side. I hoped for him to get so use to me constantly dribbling ball from side to side that he would attempt to cheat to one side hoping to either steal the ball from my hands or get me to pick up my dribble. Finally I baited him. I saw his body leaning to right anticipating me to dribble back to that side. Before I allowed the ball to reach the right side of my body I quickly switched my left hand to the opposite side of the orange leather ball. I then was able to explode to the opening to my left and enter the lane in front of the basket. I was only nine feet from the basket but I was not home free yet, as the defense was beginning to swarm at me like a group of killer bees. All I saw were bodies, but I didn’t care, I had already quit dribbling and was taking my two steps for my lay-up. My legs were like pogo sticks as my stride towards the basket seemed to scare off the defense from completely getting in my path toward the hoop. After my second step I was about five feet from the hoop and the defenders were to my right and my left. I

Growing up with a dad who was All-State for Basketball, and a Grandfather who played Division I basketball; I was always expected to be good at ball. I was always decent but never quite lived to expectations. When I turned 12 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 3 scoliosis, which limited not only my quickness but my ability to twist and run normally. The basketball dynasty was coming to an end as I had lost a lot of athleticism. I finally quit all sports because my back couldn’t handle the stress, and I wasn’t prepared to go into surgery. One day as I was watching…

When I walked into the store I headed right to the sports section and picked up NBA 2K16, I had been waiting to get this game for weeks, I was hype! Once we concluded our terrible shopping trip I was finally home, and the first thing I did was run up to my room and put 2K into my Xbox One. Once I opened the case however, I felt a strong force pull me down, like a seatbelt in a car. When I opened my eyes I was standing face to face with NBA superstar Kevin Durant, my favorite NBA player, he dominated the NBA with his ability to score with amazing ease. “Don’t just stand there man, shoot it!” Kevin exclaimed to me as he passed me the ball. I threw up an easy corner jump shot and it went in with a nice sound as the ball glazed through the net. “Ok I see you” Kevin said to me as I got my rebound and passed him the rock. He went back towards the half court line with the ball and started sprinting towards the rim, I opened my mouth in awe and I watched him soar into the air and 360 dunk! “Not bad, didn’t mean to dunk it so hard though” KD said as my eyes were as big as golf balls in straight amazement. We ended up playing a game of 21, which he obviously kicked my butt in, but I had a great…

The ball fell into the hands of my teammate. First quarter flashes by. The game had been back and forth. Second quarter rolls around. There is six minutes and 12 seconds on the clock. I was standing at half court. One of the Todd County girls was taking the ball out, and we pulled our press on. She over throws the ball and it comes directly to me. All I could think was it is a fast break, so I need to push the ball up the court. I start dribbling the basketball. I could barely here the ball bouncing and out of nowhere I hear a teammate yelling my name. I look over and her girl had been screened, so she was wide open. I immediately quit dribbling and I plant my left foot in front of my right and I twist to my left to pass the ball to her. I felt something funny pinch in my knee, and I instantly fell down. The ball never reached my teammate, and it was picked up from an opposing player. I tried to get up, because I knew I had to rush down there to play defense. As I put all my weight on my right knee tears started to stream, and I realized I could not get up. The ref called a timeout, and Mr. Aaker walked out to…

I was running with the ball at my feet, my arms and knees where heavy from all the training I had been doing, but I felt good. I knew I was going to make a good play. I looked up and saw two defenders but, with no hesitation I charged towards them with the ball. I cut left hard and flew past one defender. After him I approached a tall defender and nutmegged him, passing the ball in between and through a player's legs. I then passed the ball up forward to a friend of mine who almost scored an amazing goal. Unfortunately, it hit the post and went out but that play I had done was brilliant to my teammates because they were all complimenting me. Tryouts went on for 2 days and I had played well on both days. I had 2 assists and amazing passes on both games, but my joy and confidence all disintegrated into nothing but thoughts when I got cut from the…

I was extremely nervous despite the fact that everyone had told me I was going to make varsity since I had done so well at camp. There were about 23 people trying out for varsity and only 18 could make it and so I had a good chance at making the team but that still did not calm my nerves. Before we went out to the brand new turf field for tryouts I was psyching myself out and was doubting myself in all ways possible. My hands were shaking, I was sweating, all while listening to the calm chatter of everyone else echoing loudly in the locker room. “You can’t make varsity; the others are just too good” I was telling myself. During tryouts the pace was fast, the humidity was high, and our spirits were just as high. We had to do lots of ball work and ball skills on the first day and I was messing up completely at times. At one point I screamed out in utter anger because I just could not get my feet to do the correct things. I was so angry with myself because I knew I could do better than what I had done that day. I went home feeling utterly defeated but ready for the next day because there were two days of tryouts. The next day I felt absolutely great and I was doing everything right! I was passing every drill while receiving complements from my coaches. I felt great and as I was walking up the big, blue steps to the locker room, I knew that I had done great at…
